This article is for the smartest person
on campus! A smart person like you will
see the opportunities and benefits
available in Young Volunteers in
ACTION I YVA).
Because you may volunteer your
services in an area associated with your
major, you may not only meet others in
your field but also gain job-related
experience to put on your resume’. You
all know that the competition in the job
market is rough. One criterion employ
ers use is whether a young person has
t demonstrated a willingness to help
others and an interest in the community.
Volunteers receive an extra advantage in
that you may participate in workshops on
resume’ writing and job interviewing
techniques. Obviously, you need us.
Some of the problem areas being
addressed include illiteracy, runaway
youth, hospital and nursing assistance,
programs for the handicapped, park and
recreation, and drug and al.ohol abuse.
Although YVA is a new psogram, over
100 people are now involved in these
activities. YVA has many more positions
to fill. Obviously, we need \ou.
The more you share wi.h each other,
the more benefits you r»ap in unique
opportunities; and the ntore worthwhile
contributions you mak 2 toward the
community. Opportunities exist for long
and/or short term services assisting with
an agency of your choice. This
opportunity will help develop skills,
leadership, and experience. Yet, YVA is
not all work. Meeting others, participa
ting in specially planned activities,
receiving discounts in local businesses,
winning awards for outstanding service
- all of these and more! YVA is a two
fold program that involves channeling
your energy in a career and in helping
others. What more could you ask for?
