Special to the Cluster

Mercer University’s band direc
tor resigned last month, after bring
ing the band program from obscuri
ty to an active 50-piece ensemble
over the last nine years.
Abandoned in the late 1950s. the
band resumed in 1975 as a small
wind ensemble, and has since
fought for rehearsal space, money
and students.
When Dr. Benny Ferguson ar
rived in 197$. he found a small
band with no bandroomr When be

than doubled in size, includes a jazz
ensemble, and has a new
bandroom.
The band at Ferguson’s arrival
shared space with die choir in Ware
Music Hall. The-struggling
25-member band also, shared
students. Afternoon rehearsals
allowed students to be-in both the
band and die choir. Evti.Tiaily. the
band moved to the basement of
Newton Hall lo a room ili-equipped
to bouse a band, and rehearsal time *
changed to 10 a.m.
Aflolher problem has been fimP*
mg adequate financial support.
"Bandsare expensive.” Ferguson
maintains. Requiring more costly
equipment than choirs.
"Trot*.* Ware, an Atlanta at
torney and Mercer alumnus,
befriended the Music Department
and Ferguson. Ware donated the
funds to renovate what is now
Ware Music Hall in hooor of his
wife in 1968. Every year, Ferguson
says. Ware would call him and ask
what he needed. Sometimes it was
instruments, sometimes concert
jackets. Ware died in f985.

Student recruiting has been down
in the last couple of years.

the World's Fair in New Orleans.
Lack of support from both inside
and outside of the band has kept the
band off the road the last couple of
years. jThe jazz ensemble,
however, look its first tour, paid
for by the participating students, to
Mexico over spring break.
