Newspaper Page TextJeness wins car By SARAH CAMBRIDGE StafT Writer Pam Jeness walked away from Mercer’s first SUAB pep rally of the 1988-89 school year the winner of a new 1988 Hyundai Tuesday. Faculty and students alike wat ched as Jeness. a sophomore, pul the winning key in the ignition and started the engine Jeness was the eighth of 10 students whose names were drawn and then given a key to try in the car. She had entered 53 times and was excited to win. "I can't say anything! It's great! I've been hoping for this. I really needed it»” Jeness will be able to take her new “Official Mercer Spirit Car" home upon proof of insurance. The pep rally, which was spon- - sored by SUAB and Alumni Rela tions, began with a rousing perfor mance of "We got the Spirit" by Mercer’s award winning cheerleaders, and the energy con tinued into the introduction of the coaches and players of this year’s athletic teams. After anythcr performance by the cheerleading squad, this time their award w inning dance routine, the excitement peaked in the presenta tion of the car. Although the estimated crowd for the rally was around 1000 students and ’ faculty members. Tuesday’s total attendance only amounted to about 400. accor ding to Mr. Davis Paimour, direc tor of Student Activities. SANFORD StafT Writer "For a period of over 40 years. I had a disorder known as multiple personalities.** This was the opening statement Ms. Chris Sizenoure made last Mon day night at the ^Medical School Auditorium in a talk held in order to provide insight into improving con ditions, in mental health in the Mid dle Georgia area, sponsored by the Mental Health Association of Georgia. Sizenoure was two years old when she could sense a drastic change had come over her. Such change was the s result of her witnessing three traumatic events within a short span of tune. The events included her see ing a.man drowned in a ditch, a man cut in half while his belt still remain ed neatly buckled around his waist and her mother badly cut her arm ■ “Over a period of 46 years. I had a total of 22 different personalitics. " Seven of those personalities were artists. 10 were poets and five taught tailoring. Since people with multiple personality disorder (MPD) arc very creative, many of the things learned during the illness carry over into their life as one person. It took Sizenoure 20 years ip recover from her illness, mainly, because psychiatrists were unwilling to embrace the fact that she had such a disorder. She was first diagnosed in 1952 in Augusta as having amnesia. Sizenoure said ihc movie The Three Faces of Eve. based on the book of the same name, has “called the problem of multiple personality disorder to the psychiatric communi ty." Joanne-Woodward portrayed Sizenoure in the movie about Sizenourc's experiences. According to Suenoure. 80 percent of children with MPD are abused, and their problem could be corrected with early intervention. About 96 percent of the 2000 diagnosed as having MPD can and do get well Contrary to the years it took Sizenoure to get wfell, it can now take as fcvyayjrvc years for someone with the disorder to return'to one personality Sizenoure, age 60. is currently working on her third book. In Sickness and In Health, which is due in bookstores in fall 1989 Southern Baptist Alliance lights fundamentalist rule By JEANNE SIMONS Staff Writer In expectation of the upcoming Georgia Baptist Convention, there are many questions’in the air. Amcmg these are questions concer ning the ability of the fundamen talist wing of the convention to take control of leadership positions. For the past ten years, the Southern Baptist Convention has been under fundamentalist control; althougWunsuccessful. attempts have been made ip recent years to take over state conventions as well It is almost certain that this year's GBC will see another aicmpt by fun damentalist to place candidates into key positions. Perhaps the strongest voice of protest against fundamentalist rule on the national level is the Southern Baptist Alliance, a coalition of Baf> lists* who. avoiding to President R Kirby Godsey. arc •‘affirming dearly the traditions and principals for which Baptist have been known throughout their history." One example of these traditions is "(he freedom of individuals to interpret their faith and to interpret the scriptures for themselves.” Another goal of the SBA is "to af firm the role of women in the ministry.’*. According to Dr. Godsey. the most important role of the SBA is. “Pettiaps . . . to under gird respect for religious diversity ." This diversi ty has been a characteristic of the Baptist denomination for years, and yet, through the leadership of the fundamentalist faction, the diversi ty is narrowing. In his statement. Dr. Godsey declared the viewpoints being ap plied by the SBC’s current leader ship "very fixed.".The fundamen talists believe in a very literal in terpretation of the Bible, while the traditionally moderate views'hold' that an individual’s interpretation is acceptable, even if different from somenoe elsc's. While the diverse beliefs and viewpoints of these two separate groups are causing much con troversy within the SBC. Dr Godsey clearly feels that the rumored formation of a new denomination is not an impending problem. Although the possibility of this occurrence still exists, the See Baptist, page 3 A
