ITZOE Managing Editor and CHARLIE SMITH News Editor When you drive onto the campus of the Cecil B. Day College of Arts and Sciences you know you're at Mercer. The signs direc ting visitors to the campus' physical plant and the student center are identical to those in Macon. There are other obvious similarities, as well. The Cecil B. Day CAS has a new library and if you talked to students and faculty you’d feel the tradition and history that is definitely Mercer. There are some differences between the campuses and student bodies, however, and pro- important differences 4crc clear. Faculty and students of the Collegdof Arts and Sciences spent the day and night sitting on their quadrangle and protesting the closing of their school. Philosophy professor Deal Hudson led the protest-—die second annual Great Books Read-In on that campus. The first Read-In was organized last year after the Trustees* Select Commission decided the Atlanta cam pus would become a market-driven university. Readers, who represented students, facul ty. and alumni from both of Mercer's undergraduate liberal arts colleges quoted from the works of Dante. Nietzche. Plato. Shakespeare. The Old Testament, and many others. The read-in lasted from 10 a.m. Wednesday to 10 a.m. Thursday. Carl Hays, a 1973 Mercei-Macon Philosophy graduate, read from Alfred North Whitehead, noting the irony that his selec tion was the subject of President R. Kirby Godsey’s dissertation. He read that classics are the “necessary enrichment of intellectual character than any other discipline." Hays is convinced that President Godscy has lost sight of the wisdom in Whitehead's praise for the Hberal arts. "I’m ij^palcd at the direction Godsey’s taken," Hsys said. "Anything, anything I can do to he p save this college. I'm willing to do." He plans to contribute to the legal defense fund and write letters to the members of the Board of Trustees. Atlanta sophomore, Noel Ivey, found it difficult to express his frustration with the Godsey administration's decision about the CAS. “There's nothing to say, nothing to do, nothing to say." Ivey went on, finding more expression in paraphrasing one of his professors as saying. **I though 1 knew the definition of power, but I’d never experienced it. Powerfull peo ple can punish innocent and get away with it.’’ Ivey continued as his friends nodded in agreement. "We came to this school because wc wanted to seek, learn, and understand and we thought that's what this college was all about, but wc got screwed by our own philosophy. That's not what [the administra tion] is all about—it's about money, big money. Dr Greer opened the meeting by announcing faculty promotions. Doctors Dodd. Bluestone and Whitaker have been promoted to Professor; Atwood. Kaladjian and Weinlraut have advanced to Associate Professor, and Elizabeth Hammond has been named an Assistant Professor. PAs A dele Houston and Debra Rene Sigman. with the help of Dr. Laune Lankin in Student Develop ment, chose the members of the committee on the basis of their academic records and histones of involvement at Mercer. “Each one is a good student with some sort of talent that would be useful to the committee.*’ says Debra Rene Sigman. “We chose speak bn history wVmen from all aspects of student life." Sigman says they also wanted to make sure they included freshman and sophomore women who are already making a place for themselves at Mercer. The com mittee has chosen Dr. Catherine Meeks.
