The Ten Best Movies of 1989
By MARK H. ROSEN
As the world stepped into the
nineties, rainy movie critics were
hastily putting together “k p ten**
lists for 1989. It is from these lists
that many movies come into
greatness. Many go on to win New
York Critic's awards. Director’s
Guild awards, and even Academy
Awards. Here in Macon. 1 found
it difficult to view many of the
films that have achieved critical ac
claim. For example. Roger and Me
has only played in the large cities
and sol have been unable to see d.
Because! could not “hop” to New
York or Lot Angles. I hope you
will not be disappointed that many
of the limited release films did not
make my list. Keep in mind that if
they do receive an Academy Award
nomination, they will probably play
in Macon. If they knock me over
as well as the following ten films
have, then they will definitely be
added to my personal list. Once
again, please keep in mind that the
fallowing list is based on personal
criteria. I look at and evaluate
everything from the spoke* word
and who is speaking it to'what we
are seeing and who shot it. Enter
tainment is also a consideration.
Many movies are put together like
artwork; that does not mean we
want to spend five dollars on it if
it belongs on a wall in the Smithso
nian. Next week. 1 plan on begin
ning the nineties with a look back
at the ten best films of the eighties.
Boy, have 1 got my work cut out
for me. anybody seen my

Okay. Macon is dull. There is
nothing to do here. I agree. But at
Vast on Monday. January 22nd
(here will be no excuse to be bored,
for the local group The Cereal
Killers will be playing at O’Neal-
ly’s. wielding their own brand of
maximum rock and roll.
A Macon tradition since
September of 1989. The Cereal
KiBen aim to put this town on the
map. Lead singer Matt Grubb
describes the group as "Macon's
underground alternative rock
source." and he doesn't mean
Depeche Mode. Tired of the
endless amount of cover bands in
existence, they took their cue from
bands like The Replacements and
The Clash to be as original as they
wanted to be. Though they have a
wide range of influences, they
aren’t limited to just reprocessing
old ideas. They are ground
breakers and as guitarist Tim Potts
says "!*ve been in good bands
before, but none ;
this."
The band consists of Grubb and
Potts, gfotarist Reuben Fedeca.
bassist Stewart Haddock, and
drummer Larry Voss. They are a
mixed bag of musicians from area
bands like Vex and London Bridge.
The Cereal Killers came together
when they realized they were a
strong musical unit. There are a
few covers in their live set
(" 1-2-X-U” by Wire, a Godfather*
song, as well as some Misfits
material) but mainly the band con
centrates on originals, such as
soon-to-be classics "I’m So Hap
py I Could Pee In My Pants" and
"Old Age. Adolescence. Infancy."
Beware, however, for they fre
quently bombard the audience with
cereal.
This is a band that must be heard
(and seen) to believe. They play ai
O'Neally’s on January 22nd— sc
get out and actually experience
something originally Macon. As
Stewart Haddock promises "It's
more fun than studying!"

title character in charge of finding
out who-dooe-it. Robert Townsend
is funny as the ever elusive
Maubee, the prime-suspect, and
Quinn's childhood friend. The film
has this quality that moves it as
though the audience was sitting on
the bench, catching some rays, and
watching the story unfold- There
arc many twists and turns and it is
hard to keep your eyes off the
screen. So sit bade, fia one of those
drinks with the little unbrelias, and
enjoy. Nice reggae soundtrack just
to the atmosphere.
9. Breatotg-f/i-Director Bill For
syth has now established himself as
an American filmmaker with this,
his second film set in America.
Known for Scottish productions
such as Local Hero. Comfort and
Joy. and Gregory's Girl, he suc
ceeds with this story of two
burglars who meet by chance rob
bing the same home. Butt Reynolds
is great as a sixty-year old pin who
i.ire. Casey Siezmaako under his
wing. As per usual with Forsyth,
dm film is quirky, simple, and very
entertaining.
g. When Harry Met Sally.: -The
second film of the year with an
ellipsis in the title tells the tale of
Hatry, played by Billy Crystal, and
Sally, played by Meg Ryan. They
meet on a tide to New York and by
the time they arrive, they hate each
other. Over the course of ten years,
the two frequently meet and
become friends. The film then asks
if two friends can become lovers.
Don't worry, that answer is an af
firmative. Rob Reiner's direction
has been frequently compared to
Woody Allen's in Annie Hall.
Shots of New York in autumn and
winter are especially stunning. Oh
yes. there is an infamous scene in
a cafe where Sally shows Harry
that women can effectively fake an
orgasm. Incidendy, the lady who
asks to have “what she is having"
is Rob Reiner’s own mother. Nice
jazzy soundtrack by Harry Con-
nick, Jr.
7. Lawrence of Arabia-'!ah, I
know, this film was originally
released in 1962. However, this
year David Lean, with assistance
from such notables as Steven
Spielberg, reconstructed his film
and re-released it. Known as "the
thinking-man's epic," Lawrence
really challenges ns audience With

stereo to boot. The video tape is
presented in “letter-box" format so
as to preserve the screen ratio.
6. Say Anything...-Writer-
Director Cameron Crowe scores
with this winning story of teenage
love. John Cusack is fitting in the
role of the eccentric Lloyd Dobler.
Newcomer lone Syke is the smart,
college bound, love Interest. The
two are total opposites that seem to
attract each other. Please note that
this film is not another one of those
teenage angst stories. It avoids all
the cheeziness and cuts to the heart
As there are many other great
films out there, this year also
brought some disappointments
Two films that I felt I could not
miss, did. First of all Family
Businas, had everything going for
it. Scan Connery. Dustin Hoffman,
and Matthew Broderick were the
three generations of family. Suffice
to say that this film does absolute
ly no justice to my of the stars. The
weak link exists in the story. All
three decide to pull off the "big"
job. By the end. you don't care
what happens Dustin Hoffman's
Italian is merely presented in finger
gestures and use of the "F" word.
Even when I tell people the film,
stinks, they just can't believe it.
