telegraphic summary.
A. severe shock of earthquake oc¬
curred at Jacksonville, Fla., last night.
The report that Marshal Fitzsimons,
of this State is to be removed, is un¬
founded.
A telegraph operator at Greenville,
N. 0., committed suicide last evening,
by taking morphine.
A match game between Messrs. Bo
garaus and Carver for $10,000 has bee*
made.
Charles Sharp and James McDonnell,
were executed to-day, at Mauch Chunk,
for the murder of Gov. K. Smith.
Houck’s brewery, at Newark, N. J.,
was destroyed by fire yesterday morn
mg. Loss $100,000.
A fire broke out in Jule Herman's
bar room, in Cochran, Ga., last night,
destroying property to the amount of
$ 6 , 000 .
A collision occurred on the West
bound freight train, on the Cincinnati
. Railroad Saturday night, when near
Mineral City, killing one person and
seriously wounding two others.
“First District.”
The editor of the Recorder feels
flattered by the kind and complimen¬
tary mention of “First District,” sug¬
gesting his name for Congress to fill the
vacancy created by the death of the
late gifted and able Hartridge. Some
one will be sent, but it would have been
better, in our opinion, for the Governor
not to have ordered an election. No
good can be accomplished, for by the
time the member elect gets to Washing¬
ton, be will not have been in his seat a
week before Congress adjourns. He
can possibly do nothing except to
draw a little pay; pay for doing no
Ahing. We do not desire either the
money T e honor under such circum
stances. AV Governor could
recall his proclamation, as it will put
Chatham and other counties to an un
necessary expense without one particle
of benefit.
If an)) one is sent, let him be a busi¬
ness man, well acquainted with, the com¬
mercial wants of our city.
Much Ado About Nothing.
The Griffin /Sun is about the only
paper in Georgia which did not copy
and comment upon the non-sensical
newspaper bosh set afloat in regard to
an imaginary clause in a law passed by
the Legislature and making receivable only national for
bank notes coin
taxes. The assertion that the law in
question debarred the payment of taxes
, in greenbacks was so referred palpably the foolish
that we never even to mat¬
ter. We have not yet arrived at the
point where we believe a Georgia leg¬
islature can demonetize a legal tender
of the national government. The At¬
lanta Constitution now says the mistake
was a clerical error and grew out of
the omission to insert the word “or” in
the printed copy.— Sun.
The Recorder took the same view
the Sun claims for itself. We made no
mention of the matter at all, except,
perhaps, to publish the paragraph as a
matter of news. It was plain upon
the face of the legislative proceedings,
that no such interpretation was in¬
tended by the Legislature. The spirit
as well as the letter of a law must, be
looked at, and any one would have
seen that it was not the intention to
debar greenbacks in payment of taxes.
It shows, however, how important it
is to word ail laws concisely, clearly
lucidly ; as to proper grammar,
punctuation and the putting of the
right word in the right place, so as to
clearly express the definite and posi
tive meaning of the paragraph, law or
section.
l A Meeting
li the Democratic Executive Committee
If the First district, is called to meet
I b S-yann.h o i on the .i 21st oi .. of e th,. month. .i
IThe best thing the Committee could
*o, would be to itt the election go by
default, and so suggest to the district,
No good 0 can be accomplished, 1 but there
will . I1 be . a certain expense A to all ,, the .
counties, We look at this thing iu the
light of common sense and positive
goed to be obtained. How long would

what op
wuuhe have to accomplish
anything ?
If it was in the power of the Gover¬
nor to appoint, there would be some
show of reason in filling the vacancy.
If it was the long session of Congress,
there would be a show of reason in
electing some one. But as it is, on the
4th day of March, the present Congress
ends, and should there be a call session
Col. Nicholls wbuld take his Beat.
Under all the circumstances then, we
think it unwise an unnecessary to have
an election. The members from Georgia
will cheerfully attend to any interests
that Savannah may desire looked after.
The Governor's proclamation command is not an
absolute and an autocratic
that must be obeyed, with penalties at¬
tached for disobedience. We are
opposed to an election.
For Georgia.
Maj. W. J. Houston, agent of the
Atlanta and Charlotte Air Line Rail¬
road has been out to Texas to see if he
could not fix some return rates from
that State for those who desire to return
to their old home*. A great many
Georgians are anxious to return to their
old homes, but the rates are five cents
per mile, while for those going to Te^as,
the rates are only two cents per mUe.
A reporter of the Atlanta Post inter¬
viewed Maj. Houston as follows:

of the Texas lines ?

CORRESPONDENCE.
Who to Send to Congress for the
Unexpired Term.
Editor Evening Pecoo'der :—I know
it is treading on delicate ground to
propose a gentleman for Congress who
is connected with the organ that pro¬
poses him.
I know also that it may offend in¬
stead ’of please, but believe me, it is
only a just tribute that I would offer to
Major Orme, who has now, for upwards
of a quarter of a century been con¬
nected with the literature and journal¬
ism of Georgia, and who has ever been
identified with her interests and under¬
takings.
I would therefore propose Major
Orme for the unexpired term, as a gen¬
tleman well qualified in every way to
fill the position. First District.

Wanting a Coroner.
Dr. Sheftall, Coroner of Chatham
county, has been called upon on three
different occasions, in the past tew
days, to hold inquests on parties who
have died unexpectedly. On an ex
amination, it was found that the cases
were not subjects for a coroner’s inquiry.
Acknowledgement.
Dr. T. J. Robinson, of Toon’s station
Hardeman county, Tennessee, knowing
the success which crowned Dr. Sheftall s
efforts in the treatment of yellow fever
in Memphis and Vicksburg, has written
him a congratulatory letter, and also
requesting him to send him a detailed
account of the system used by Dr.
Sheftall in the treatment of the disease.
The letter is highly eulogistic and
speaks in flattering terms of our young
and talented physician.

Workingmen in the villiage of Gun
ston, Va., have circumvented the hard
times in a novel and successful way. A
co-operative association furnishes its
members with constant board employment large at
fair wages, and they in one
family house, and thereby reduce the
cost of living about one-half. They
have a large farm and garden, and are
employed raising food, making cloth¬
ing, erecting buildings, making roads
and fences, cutting fuel, and in house¬
keeping for themselves, producing all that is with
their own labor nearly and make re¬
quired to supply their wants
them comfortable, with a considerable
surplus, which they sell. Each mem¬
ber is required to save a considerable
part of his wages. None of them have
oeen idle a day during the past nine
months.
Henry Varley’s Tabernacle at Mel¬
bourne will, if completed in accordeuce
with the plan, have a seating capacity
of 5,000. Its central hall will be an
ampitheatre in style, with a large coffee
house in front. The- buildings around
it will provide comforts for a working¬
man’s club. It is proposed to expend
$ 20 , 000 .
A cargo of Carrara marble, lost years
ago at sea, aud recently recovered, was
found to be completely honeycomed by
