A Helping Hand.
On Saturday last in answer to an
advertisement for a servant girl, a sal- bat
low-faced, rather scrawny looking,
neatly dressed woman about 30 years
of age, decked out in a linen suit and
straw walking hat, presented herself at
th6 residence of Dr. Updegrove, 804
Marshall street. She was so glib of
tongue and appeared from her own
talk to possess such qualifications that
Mrs Updegrove hired her off-hand,and
from her style of doing her work
thought she had found a perfect the para¬
gon—the ideal servant girl of pes
rich The new arrival said her name
was Melinda Mowry. Things went
along smoothly until Wednesday mor->
ning, when Mrs. Updegrove went to
market. When she returned and
missed Melinda, the washerwoman
say mg she had not seen her, Mrs. Up^
dt grove went up stairs to look for her.
Then she discovered the true charac¬
ter of the marvellous servant. She liad
go? e, and with her had disappeared
three trunks filled with Mrs. Upde
grove’s best wearing apparel, a lot of
jewelry, ring, including a valuable diamond
a watch and a guitar worth $150.
In short, a clean sweep had been
made of every thing worth carrying off’,
valued in all at over $ 500 . Word
was sent down to the central station,
and Irom the description of the missing
hand-maiden the detectives had no
trouble in finding her libenbss in the
album under the name of Mary Elliott,
a notorious thief and jail bird, who had
been twice in prison for similar roi>
beries.
The picture was sent up to Mrs. Up¬
degrove, and she was astonished when
she saw that the felon and her paragon
of a girl were one and the same. Then
the detectives set at work. They dis¬
covered a carman who had carried
away the trunks to a house in Brown
street, near Twelfth, He was tricked
into going to West Philadelphia for a
suppositious piano and sewing machine.
While he was away, in order to cover
her tracks, the woman got another car¬
man, who hauled the plunder in the
trunks to the West Philadelphia depot.
This carman was also found, just as he
returned from the job. The detectives
found now that the trunks had been
checked for Paoli at first, and that the
woman had bought a ticket for Harris¬
burg arid left on the evening train. A
telegram was sent to the Harrisburg
police to stop the fugitive and detain
the trunks. In a few minutes the an¬
swer been came flying back that this had
done. Officers went to Harris¬
burg. and there found Melinda and her
booty. She laughed when the officers
came, and owned up everything. Yes¬
terday morning the officers, their pris¬
oner and the trunks were whirled back
to this city. Melinda was given a
hearing before Magistrate Pole. She
smiled significantly when Mrs. Upde¬
grove stepped forward to testify con¬
cerning the duplici ” of her late ser¬
vant, whom she had hired upon her
mere say-so without exacting recom¬
mendations. The bail was fixed at
$2,000. The prisoner, Elliott, who is known
to the police as thief. Mary is spoken
of aa an expert
The Wrong Elevator. — “Will ye
tell me where the ilivator is, if ye
pla/.e ?” said afresh and buxom recent
arrival from the Emerald Isle to some
gentlemen in front of the Fifth Ave¬
nue Hotel t his morning.
She was directed to go inside. Here
one of the hall boys escorted her to the
elevator, into which she entered and
immediately kept, ascended. making
She her seat alter two
or three passages up and down until
she attracted the attention of Mr. Carr
of the hotel-office. She was requested
to state at what floor she wanted to get
off.
Oh, its not flure at all, at all,” she
replied, “Will ye plane drap me as
near the Grand Cintrai daypo as ye
can?”—A 7 . Y. Telearam.
