A Terrible Accident,
A Young Man Caught m a Loop of Red-hot
Wire.
A frightful accident occurred at
Join stown, Pa., on Saturday, The
victim’s name was Richard 0. Jones,
and he lived with his step-father, Wm. the
S. J< nes. The accident happened at
Rod Mills, where lie was employed as
“sticherein” at the finishing rolls, his
work being to catch the ends of the
wire rods as they came through the
rolls and guide them through the last
pass before they are wound upon the
spindle at the north end of the build*
ing. About o’clock Saturday morning,
5
fifteen minutes before the usual quit**
ting time, one of the long red-hot rods,
whose end he had just inserted in his
part of the rolls, became twisted as it
was guided along the iron floor behind
him by a boy named John Bingham.
The rolls were running at the rate of
four hundred and fifty revolutions per
minute, and the twist caused the wire
to curvet through the air, one of the
loops falling over young Jones’ body,
just below the ribs, and drawing him
down on his knees with his back
against the rolls, through which the
wire sped with lightning-like rapidity.
John Devine, a fellow-workman, was
standing within a few feet of the vic¬
tim, but was powerless to render any
assistance. John Rowly seized an axe,
and with one blow severed the wire,
but not before it had cut and burned
its way through the body of the victim
The left arm was severed between the
elbow and shoulder, the right between
the elbow and wrist, and a portion of
the backbone was all that held the
mutilated body together. His bowels
were cut into small pieces, and fell out
in a mass on the floor. Death is sup¬
pose, d to have resulted almost inatane
ously. There was a slight quivering of
the muscles half a minute afterwards,
and that was all.
The mangled body was carried into
the toolhouse by John Pendry, the en¬
gineer, and John Devine, and a wagon
drew up at the door soon afterward, in
which the remains were placed and
hauled up to Emmanuel James’ un¬
dertaking establishments where the
body was carefully placed prepared in for ice¬ the
grave. It was then an
box and hauled to the home of the vic¬
tim’s parents. Their grief painful was uncon¬
trollable, and was most to wit¬
ness The mother and sister, it appears,
have dreaded an accident of the kind
ever since the young man went to work
in the Rod Mill, and at his usual time
of coming home they were always to be
seen at the door, looking anxiously down
the street, as if they half expected to
see him being brought home a corpse.
