The Figures—Georgia’s Popula¬
tion
We are surprised at the following
which we take from the Atlanta Consti¬
tution:
There are 75,000 less people in
Georgia than there were ten years
ago by the census returns. We have
lost a member of Congress, and we
have lost 75,000 men and women from
our fields, workshops and households.
We do not so read the figures we
have seen. It may be so, and if it is
so, it is to be regretted. We were un¬
der the impression that Georgia was
growing about as fast as any other
Southern State, except Texas.
As to the loss of field hands that
oan easily be accounted for. The negro
field, and the young negro fellows,
many of them, are becoming rovers,
without any home.
In the cities, tho negroes have died
off at the rate of two to one, as in com¬
parison with the whites ; at least it is
bo in Savannah ; and there is a dispo¬
sition with the negroes to live in town
or city, and to live by getting odd jobs.
But we can hardly beliove we have
lost 75,000 population. We hope our
contemporary is mistaken as to his
figures.
If we arc to loso a member of Con¬
gress, it will bo because the ratio of
representation will be about 165 or
170,000. Wo shall look with interest
for the full returns when officially an¬
nounced. We give Georgia a popula*
tion of about 1,250,000. A mere guess
of ours. In 1S70, it was 1,184,109.
Since the above was put in type, we
take the following from tho Macon
lelegraph:
Returns from forty-soven counties of
Georgia show a population of 383,166
as against 2SS.14S iu 1S70; an increase
of over ol.) per cent. If the remaining
counties do as well Georgia will show
over ten per cent, greater increase
than the great State of Pennsylvania,
and thus put to rest the statement
made some time since, that immigra¬
tion was building up all the Northern
States, but that the South showed lit¬
tle or no increase.
Railroad Commission.
Says the Atlanta Constitution, the
railroad commissioners for the State of
Georgia seem to he getting along well
with their work. Eleven railroads have
so far reported their earnings and ex¬
penses for May and June, 1S79 and
18S0, as asked for by the commission¬
ers. Bo well satisfied with their earn¬
ings under the commissioners’ taritf
were these roads that ouly two asked
an iucrease of rates. Those two roads
gave satisfactory reasons to the com¬
missioners why an advance should be
made for them, and their request was
granted. Quite u number of roads have
not reported yet
From the report of the statistical de
partment of the census bureau it is
estimated that the total ludebteduess

000,000. The State indebtedness ie
now placed at 8266 638,000, so that the
entire local fdebts of the country will

GUBERN ATORIAL CONVICTION.
An Immense Crowd in At¬
tendance.
LESTER'S FRIENDS HOPEFUL,
No Ballot To -Day*
[SPECIAL DISPATCH TO THE RECORDER.]
Atlanta, Aug. 4—10 a. m
The Convention was to assemble at 11
o’clock, but as tLe ball and galleries are
already crowded, Judge Lester, Chair
man oi the State Executive Committee,
owing to the immense pressure, thought
it best to order a vacation until 2:30
p. in.
The Hon. Rufus E. Lester’s
friends are hopeful and strength¬
ening. No ballot possible to-day.
Accessions to Lester are expected.
His full strength will not develop, how
ever, nntil after several ballots.
The two-thirds rule will certainly be
adopted.
Pat. Walsh, will probably be tempo¬
rary, and L. M. Trammell, permanent
chairman.
FIRST CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT,
Caucus Selection of Electors.
GENERAL LAWTON FOR STATE
AT LARGE.
[SPECIAL DISPATCH TO THE RECORDER.]
Atlanta, August 4—11 a. m.
The delegates from the First Con¬
gressional district, met in caucus at 9
o’clock this morning in the Senate
Chamber, with J- C. Dell as chairman.
Under the two-thirds rule, after the
fifth ballot, they selected S. D. Brad
well, of Liberty, as elector for the First
district, with Josephus Camp, of Eman¬
uel, as alternate, and Gen. Lawton for
the Sta te at Large. i j—,
J Committee—Jones, of Burke, and
Grubb, of McIntosh.
These names will be presented to the
Convention when in session.
EDITORIAL NOTES.
Garfield was chief of staff for Rose
crans, but Rosecrans is a Hancock man,
out and out.
In Massachusetts there are 150,000
more women than men. Smart men
leave Massachusetts for tho West. The
girls remain.
There is a good deal of suspicion in
Washington that the Confederate cen¬
sus enumerators in the South are pad¬
ding their lists to gain Congressmen.

worthy suspicion. ’’The thief thinks
every bush an officer.”
Washington Irving, who was a
bachelor himself, said, “whenever a
man’s friends begin to compliment
him about looking young, he may be
sure that they think he is growing
old.” That is very true, and don’t
you forget it.
Dr. Tanner has done some good, no
doubt. But a better man comes for¬
ward and says that “a gill of liquid
ammonia in a pail of water," will give
a person a more wholesome bath than
can be had at all the mineral springs,
put together, for six months and ex¬
penses included.
Germany has begun to feel tbe in
evitable result of great wars ami an
overgrown military system in the tail¬
ing otl of the average size and strength
of recruits. This is found particularly
the ease in the manuiaeturmg towus.
At Barmen, for instance, out of 706 in
their 20th year ouly 124 were fit for j
service, and the examiners in all parts I
ot the empire report the same thing.
The site for the proposed Roman
Catholic Cathedral in London was ob¬
tained at a cost, moulding interest and
expenses, of nearly £215,000. This
sum, with the exception ot a mort¬
gage of £17,500, has been covered, and
and there is a small sum iuvested as
the beginning of a building fund.
