The Fast Finished.
Notwithstanding the many doubts
as to the impossibility, if not im¬
probable, idea that Dr. Tanner
could complete forty clays and
nights without eating, ho accom¬
plished the feat yesterday at 12 m. A
few days ago lie experienced, spoke about the ter¬
rible pains he and the
great physical strain he had under¬
gone, yet he expressed the greatest
confidence in his ability to succeed.
As the fortieth day drew near the
Doctor was watched by many physi¬
cians, who expected to see him under¬
go the throes of dissolution, but in that
they were disappointed. Several persons odds
in this city made bets against
that ho would fail, and when a tele->
graphic announcement was made yes¬
terday that lie had accomplished the
almost unparalleled feat, they cheer¬
fully paid the bets.
The preparation made Friday was
to give tho Doctor a little diluted milk,
two-thirds water and one-third milk,
aud should he vomit ou taking that
Borne intluvin would be ad
ministered. This is a preparation
mede irom the gizzards of domestic
fowls and is said to be a great aid to
digestion. If his stomach would bo
able to retain the milk he was to be
supplied with his beloved and longed
for watermelon. Another physician
advised the use of kutnyss, and said:
“The genuine kumyes is used by the
Bossians and ia made Irom fermented
in,'.re’s milk. Here it is made from
cow’s milk by a long and delicate pro¬
cess. It may be retained by weak
stomachs and is valuable in cases of
obstinate vomiting. WJ at end the (.loo¬
ter’s eelf-impc ard fast b s accomplished
or what benefit it has been to pcienco,
wc cannot fm* the life of us see, but
wo may naturally expect to witness an¬
nouncements made hereafter of persons
fasting against time instead of pedes¬
trian exercises with which all commu¬
nities have been inflicted.
Experiments in Setting Posts.
A New England farmer who cut
some yellow oak timber in winter split
each log into t wo box posts, and set
them the following spring. Deter¬
mined to settle the question of the du¬
rability of posts, lie made the follow-*
ing experiments:
First pair were placed butt, end
down, one charred. Both rotted off
tho third year; the upper ends were
then put in the ground, and they last¬
ed seven years more.
Second pair were put butt end
down, one salted by boring and plug¬
ging. The salted post gave out the
second year, the unsalted the fourth
year. The ends were theu reversed,
ttml each lasted about eight years
Third pair—One was placed butt end
down, the other butt up. The butt
rottened by the third year, the other
the fourth. The ends were reversed,
and the new butt rotted ono yearj be
fore the other, although tho latter was
set one year sooner.
Fourth pair—These were set small
end down and one salted. Both rot¬
ted off the fourth year, and on being
reversed lasted tour year more.
Iu drawing conclusions from these
experiments, the farmer decided that
charring did no good and salting a
green post is useless if not injurious.
Ali tho experiments indicated that
poets set reversed In »t longest, and it
appeared than that seasoned posts last long¬
er green ones, the seasoned and
small euds in the first extvnm out last
ing i.rout twice as long :n the green
s't'j’l ends in the fourth.

Tlie Opposition to Colquitt De¬
termined.
[special dispatch to the RECORDER. I
Atlanta, Aug, 7—9:30.
The Convention assembled at 9:30 a.
m. and proceeded to ballot. There is
no material change in the situation.
At'ier the twenty-filth ballot, the
Convention adjourned until Monday.
The opposition is determined and
united that no nomination shall be
made until Colquitt withdraws, but
has offered to accept any other man.
Professor Marsh reaffirms his dis¬
coveries touching the law of brain
growth, viz: 1. All tetiary mammals
had small brains. 2. There was a
gradual increase in the size of the
brain during this period. 3. This
increase was mainly confined to the
cerebral hemisphere, or higher portions
of the brain. 4. In some groups the
convolutions of the brain have gradu¬
ally become more complicated. 5. In
some the cerebellum and olfactory
lobes have even diminished in sizes.
G. There is some evidence that the
general law of brain growth holds
good for birds and reptiles from the
cretaceous to the present time. He
also shows that of ancient animals with
small brains and large bodies were
especially those that became extinct,
those with large brains being more
likely to survive.
The new iron bridge across the Red
river, on the St. Louis, Iron Mountain
and Southern railroad, is completed,
and trains cross for the first time. Its
length is 788 feet between the abut¬
ments. There is a draw span 300 feet
in length, a fixed span of 312 feet, and
two fixed spans of 88 feet each, The
bridge is a first-class one in e^ery re¬
spect.
