‘—' — t() n 5i market. ( Sanaxnah, March 16. | Tl'cr was a good demand for this article to- ! day, the sales amounting to 1706 hales at a very 1 lull range of price?,sellers wereenabled to obtain • full former asking P rice? . and in some instances j an advance of fully |c. was paid. The follow ing j comprise the ? a es ■ sat 8, 20 at Bj, 49 at B|_ , fc, 2l at SI, 1-1 fl t 113 at 9 716, liO at 9h, 19 at 9|. 180 at 9j, 286 at 10, 71 at 10j, 174 at 10J, and 4 at 10| cents. The market closed very ti:m. Expense of Newspapers.— Few of i our readers have any idea of the ex pense of conducting a daily paper.— The New York Courier $■ Enquirer of the sth itist., is truly a mammoth sheet. The editor says: “This morning’s edition contains] one. millon two hundred and forty-nine j thousand seven hundred and sixteen i cms of Minion, Nonpareil, Agate, and | Pearl type. The expense of setting that quantity of type at the prices we pay—thirty.two cents per thousand ems —is three hundred and ninety-nine dollars and ninety cents. This calcu lation does not include the extra ex pense on some thirteen columns of ‘■ rule andjigure” work, which is paid for at the rate of sf'xTy-ftvur cents per ~ltiutr?£xinl imtf^ 1 - —* matr Cool— Tim Louisville. Courier gives ; the following account, of a cool trans- ] action which took place in that city tit j the burning of the Louisville Hotel a few days since. One of the boarders, ] carpet-bag in hand, descended lrom j the third story, which was all in j flames, and marched up to the c erk at the office, around whom the hot cin- 1 ders were dropping, told him that he ] would leave his quarters, and wanted i to know how much his bill was. Clio clerk turned to the ledger, counted it I up, made out the bill, took the money, and politely bowed him out, at the same time expressing his regret at his sudden departure. N ewspapeti Rf.adf.r.s. —It’subscribers to journals, like church members, in “sloping their paper,’’ were required to produce an editorial certificate be- j lore they could subscribe for another, j there would be some curious devel >pe tnents —as, for example: 41 We certi fy that A. 15. stopped his paper be cause the editor refused to allow him six columns fora personal vindication which concerned nobody but himself. We certify that ('. 1). refused the pa per because the editor did not publish i he obituary notice of a relative, which , was never sent to him. but which he ought to have detected in some of his exchange papers \\ e certify that E l". wishes to transfer his patronage io another paper, because, having ta ken this paper six years without pay ip-psvrwu I, he lelt himself insulted :>y 11 scut to him bv way ol vg. is pn i r\. We certify that I .1. has stopped his paper because the editor had the temerity to express on opinion on a certain matter with- ; out having previously ascertained the opinion of tin’s particular subscriber.’’ Important Arrival —We understand that t he. notorious LV. lieberts, Gide on fopenheifier am] Lewis Clark, the ■ men charged with the robbery of Jack son. of Monroe county, and who were tried and convicted at the late session of the biup rior Court of that county, arrived in town on yesterday morning, under the escort of the efficient l’rin cipal Keeper of the Penitentiary.— The two first named, are now in the j Baldwin county jail, awaking the de cision of the Supreme Court, to which they appealed, and the last in the Pen itentiary. Roberts was sentenced for nineteen years. Copenheiffer 14 and Clark 4 years. It will he recollected, Roberts is an old and rather distin guidled offender. —Southern Recorder, Last Acts of Congress.— Among : other items prior to its adjournment, Congress appropriated $ 100,000 lbr the construction of the Custom House in Charleston. The salaries of the Vice President and cabinet officers, including the Secretaries of State, Treasury, War, Navy, and Interior, and the Postmas ter General and Attorney General, are j respectively increased from $6, 000 to £53,000 per annum, 1 he outstanding Stocks of the Uni- i ted States may be purchased by the ! Secretary of the Treasury at the cur- j rent market price, to he paid for from any surplus funds in the Treasury, j provided that the balance in the Treas ury shall not at any time be reduced below 80,000.000. I he Mexican Boundary Commission is continued till April 1, 1854, and the necessary appropriations made there-! for. The clerks in the several Executive"! Departments, from find after the 30th of June next, are to be arranged into I lour classes, with different grades of i salary, and no clerk is to be appointed ! in either of the classes until he shall 1 have been examined and found quali fied by a Board of three Commission ers, one of whom is to be the chief of the Bureau to which the clerk is to be appointed,- and the other two to be so-; lecied by the head of the Department ■ to which the Bureau is attached. Have the courage to tell a person that his piece is not fit for publication, if it is proper for you so to do. The truth is, we suspect, that Kos-■ sulh’s knowledge far exceeds his hon esty, and neither are a match for his cowardice. Under the guise ot patrio i tism and the profession of friendship, he plunged his country into an oppres sion it had never known, and no v , un der no better pretences, seeks to make the chains double in number, and ten fold more galling. Kossuth is getting to be known—[Boston Bee. * It is said that there are two words : and only two in our language which i contian all the vowels in their regular ; order.
