JANUARY 8. 2008 — PAGE 3B Social News January Blood drives planned in Madison County The American Red Cross has planned a blood drive at Trinity Baptist Church Monday, Jan. 12, from 2-7 p.m. The church is located at 2411 Hwy. 29 North, Danielsville. Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Platelets can be given safely every two weeks, up to 24 times a year. Most healthy people age 17 and older, who weigh at least 110 pounds, are eligible to donate blood and platelets. Senior Center menu for Jan. 12 - 16 The Eloise McCurley Senior Center has announced its lunch menu and planned activities for Monday, Jan. 12, through Friday, Jan. 16. Monday - Orange/pineapple juice, beef patty with ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise, scalloped potatoes, mixed vegetables, hamburger bun, vanilla pudding and low fat milk. Fitness/puzzles/cards. Heritage Foundation to meet Feb. 1 The Madison County Heritage Foundation will meet Sunday, Feb. 1, from 2:30 - 4 p.m. at the Madison County Library. Members say there will be an election of officers for2009, planning for potential “rambles,” as well as recording and scanning all of the county’s church history. Additionally, members noted, there will be a brief presentation of the past county school sub district boundaries (there were 41) and potential school locations from 1894. Angel Food Ministries announces January menu Angel Food Ministries, a non profit group, has announced its menu offerings for January. A regular box of food, priced at $30 each, will contain the following items: Ribeye steaks, leg quarters, beef patties, cheese-filled manicotti, pork rib strips, chicken breast fajita strips, ground turkey, broccoli, peas, oatmeal variety box, shelf stables milk, blueberry muffin mix, white com tortillas, pinto beans, chicken flavored rice and vermicelli, a dozen eggs and dessert. Angel Food also offers a senior/ convenience box at a cost of $28 each. This box includes the following items: New Orleans-style chicken over classic chicken tetrazzini, grilled chicken strips and penne pasta, country fried steak, beef and bowtie pasta, flame-broiled Salisbury steak, cheesy chicken and broccoli casserole, spaghetti and meatballs, chicken parmesan, flame-broiled beef patty and ten desserts. There are also five “specials” offered with the purchase of either a regular box or a senior/convenience box. They are as follows. Special 1 ($22) - six pound assorted combo box, including New York Strips, sirloin strips, boneless pork chops and hamburger steak. Special 2 ($21) - 4.5 pound bacon-wrapped meat combo, including bacon-wrapped beef filet, bacon-wrapped pork filet and bacon- wrapped chicken filet. Special 3 ($21) - 3.75 pound T-bone special. Special 4 ($20) - ten-pound chicken combo box, including a whole Perdue chicken, wings, chicken nuggets and breaded chicken tenders. Special 5 ($21) - fresh fruit and veggie box, which includes Idaho baking potatoes, sweet potatoes, medium yellow onions, Navel oranges, Georgia-grown pecan halves, Florida red grapefruit, Florida green cabbage, carrots, Florida tangerines and Washington state Bose pears. Orders are due by Monday, Jan. 12 and distribution day is Saturday, Jan. 17. Library announces January events The Madison County Library has announced its news and events for January: •Friends News: The first general meeting of the year will be on Sunday, Jan. 25, from 3 to 5 p.m. “You will have a chance to vote on the slate of officers, learn about this year's coming events, and partake of some delicious refreshment,” organizers said. “Don’t forget to renew your membership.” •Candlemaking as a celebration of light: Celebrate the return of light with this fun and usefiif craft. Program participants will make traditional melt-and-pour as well as rolled beeswax candles. Did you know that Feb. 2 is the mid-point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox? Feb. 2 is also Groundhog Day (shadows and light) and Candelaria (a Christian recognition of Jesus as the light). Learn more about this unusual day on Saturday, Jan. 31, from 10 to 12. Children under 9 must be accompanied by an adult. •Library sewing group: This Wednesday afternoon group meets from 1-3 p.m. in the general purpose room. They work on new and ongoing projects in all mediums and with members of all ages. A collection of their work will be on display in the library this month. "Come join this crafty crew!” organizers said. •Other Art Displays: "We also are proud to have some beautiful face jugs and other pottery from Georgia Mudcats Pottery (Janice Hall and Pat Shields) of Danielsville,” said library officials. They are featured in the Georgia Living Section of December 2008 Southern Living Magazine. •Pajama Storytime: Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m. “Snuggle up in your jammies with your favorite stuffed animals and listen to bedtime stories at the library,” library officials said. "We will have a small snack and some peaceful winter tales." •Chapter Book Review: Every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon beginning at 4:30, “Miss Jennifef ’ will be in the lobby reading from Encyclopedia Brown. Elementary aged children are invited to read along, listen, and share a thematic snack. •Young Adult Book Discussion Group: This month they will meet on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at 4:30 p.m. They are reading ‘Twilight" by Stephenie Meyer. The discussion is free and free food will be provided. •Preschool and Toddler Story Time: “Your child’s first introduction to reading: read with them and watch them succeed,” library leaders said. Story time includes stories, finger- plays, songs and crafts for literacy- based fun. It is open to children ages 2 to 5. Open Play will be Jan. 16. This month’s themes are: Birds, the Letter X, Feet and Snakes. Madison Go. EMS holds Madison County EMS held its annual Christmas Awards banquet at Madison County High School cafeteria. There were 108 First Responders, EMTs, paramedics and family members in attendance. Frank Edwards recognized new First Responders with certificates and jump bags. They were: Chris Abercrombie, Chasta Abercrombie, DominickDove, Mary Epps, Sonny Epps, Brandy Hendricks, Joey Hendrix, Steven Kittle, Ronnie McCurry, Brandon McDaniel, Heather Meadows, Aleta Nalley, Chris Smith, James Stem, Josh Tiller and Ryan Vaughn. The addition of these new First Responders brings the total to 62. Keith Calloway was recognized as the county's First Responder of the year. He has been First Responder for the Carlton area for approximately 20 years. "Keith has been described as one who truly has a heart for what he does,” EMS director Dwayne Patton said. “We appreciate his willingness to serve." Scott Bridges and Ty Tolbert were recognized as the "Autry-Bridges Team of the Year.” "They both exhibit the excellent working relation ship that this award was formed for,” Patton said. "Their quality of teamwork and sincere devotion to helping their fellow man gained them this award. They are an awesome team.” Veteran EMT Ronnie was honored with the "David Fitzpatrick Memorial Award.” This award was formed in memory of “Pete” Fitzpatrick who served Madison County EMS from 1976 until his untimely passing in 1992, Patton noted. annual awards banquet "(Pete) is remembered for his total dedication to his job, his county, and his fellow man,” Patton said. "I have personally been there to see Ronnie work together with his partner, Larry Bridges, to give the best care to those who may have been sick or injured. Ronnie’s ability to work together so well with his partner is one of the reasons for the Autry- Bridges Team of the Year Award.” Patton said Autry has influenced many people, including him, to get into this line of service, "I want to thank our shift supervisors, Michelle Cleveland, Frankie Crane and Bobby Smith, for their continued dedication to this service, as well as for all of our employees and volunteers,” Patton said. “You are a blessing to me and this county, and I thank you for all that you do.” JUSTINE ROSE FLOYD Justin A. and Crystal Fuller Floyd of Jefferson announce the birth of a daughter, Justine Rose Floyd, on Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Athens. She is a graduate of Wesbyterian College in Clinton, S.C., and is a second-grade teacher at Pontiac Elementary School in Columbia, S.C. He is the grandson of Lydia Sanders of Winterville, Maijorie Parker of Moultrie, and the late Donald Home Parker Steve is a graduate of the Henry Grady School of Journalism at the University of Georgia and attends the University of South Carolina School of Law in Columbia.
