January 15, 2009. ‘Bill’Mize SAUTEE - William ‘Bill’ Jack Mize, 83, died Monday, January 12, 2009, at his resi dence following an extended illness. He was born September 3, 1925, in Banks County, the son of the late Paul and Viola Fowler Mize. He served as a radio/communications opera tor in the U.S. Navy during World War II followed by a tour in the U.S. Air Force. He sang in the choir and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Warner Robins. Mr. Mize retired from Atlanta Gas Company after 34 years service, where he served as manager of the Liquid Gas (LNG) Plant in Jones County. He had been a resident of Sautee Nacoochee since October 2001. He was preceded in death by his first wife Wanda Newsom Mize; and sisters, Maxine Orser and Bea Brooks. Survivors include his wife, Irene Wendt Mize, Sautee Nacoochee; daughter, Dr. Jacquelyn Mize-Pettit, Auburn, Ala.; sons, William Wendt, Milledgeville, and Donald Wendt, Cleveland; brother, Ed Mize, Salt Lake City, Utah; grandsons, Stefan Pettit, Auburn, Ala., and Jeremiah Wendt, Cleveland; granddaughters, Wendy Wendt, Sautee Nacoochee, and Kari Pennington, Cleveland; one great-grandson; two great-granddaughters, three nieces and two nephews. Born in Loganville on March 2, 1938, he was the son of the late Wilkins Haynie and Bessie Minnell Hammond Porter. He grew up in Jefferson, graduating from Jackson County High School, and also from ———^ the University of Georgia with a bachelor's degree in business administra tion. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crises. He later retired as senior vice- president of the First National Bank of Habersham with over 30 years of service. Mr. Porter was a member of the Grant Reeves V.F.W. Post #7720, the Cornelia Masonic Lodge #92 F&AM, and was Baptist. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Danielle Rangier Porter, Cornelia; daughter and son-in-law, Monique and David Johns, Flowery Branchy; son and daughter- in-law, Eric and Dawn Porter, Clermont; sisters, Annis McClure, Jefferson, Grade Dalrymple, Anderson, S.C.; and grandchildren, Jordyn Porter and Kreed Coley, both of Clermont. Bom in Gwinnett County, she was the daughter of the late Minor and Annie Bell Mayfield Waldrip. Mrs. Purgason was preced ed in death by her husband, Jesse William Purgason; a daughter, Tina Purgason; five brothers; and two sisters. Born on May 1, 1931, in Huntsville, Ala., he was retired from the Air Force after 20 years of service, and also worked 12 years at Westinghouse. Mr. Reeves was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and one step-broth er. Survivors include his wife, Martha Jane Reeves, Winder; daughter, Lola L. Kiser, Gainesville; sons, Willie L. A native of Clarke County, he was a son of the late Bertie Lou Whitfield and James Gordon Towe. He served in the Vietnam War in the United States Army and retired from Stanfield Air Systems after 30 years. Survivors include his wife, Lillie Belle Johnson Towe; children, Virginia Lynn Webb, Crawford, Carla Jean Michael, Arnoldsville, Barbara Dianne Myers and Dennis Michael Dixon, both of Carlton, and Debbie Lucke, Florida; brothers, Bobby G. Published by MainStreet Newspapers, Inc. January 15, 2009. ‘Herb’ Valentine GAINESVILLE - Dr. Herbert Edward “Herb” Valentine, Jr. died Tuesday, January 6, 2009, at his resi dence. Bom on August 25,1917, in Valentines, Va., he graduated from Randolph Macon College in Ashland and The University of Virginia School of Medicine. He joined the Navy in 1943 as a medical officer and was assigned to the first Marine division in the South Pacific, serving in com bat in Okinawa and Peleliu. He returned to complete his residency at Emory, and later moved to Gainesville to begin private practice. He admitted one of the first patients to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Mr. Valentine practiced medicine in Gainesville for 43 years and served as Chief of Staff of the Medical Center and was named Civitan Man of the Year in 1963. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club and the St. Paul United Methodist Church. He was a founding member of the Chattahoochee Country Club and of the Christian Education Center, now Centerpoint. He was passionate in the love of his family, the care of his patients, and Gainesville High School athletics. He attended thousands of practic es and games, and was faith fully tmsted to be on the side lines. In later years, he and his wife, Bonnelle, through their love of land and farm ing created Valentine Farms in Pendergrass, becoming national leaders in the breed ing of Angus cattle. Through this adventure, they devel oped lifelong friendships with cattlemen locally and nation ally. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Bonnelle Lawson Valentine, Gainesville, sons and daughter-in-law, Thomas E. Valentine, Gross Pointe, Mich., Richard L. and Cherry Valentine, Gainesville, and Dr. C. Michael Valentine Shannon Valentine, Lynchburg, Va.; grandchildren Leigh, Brad, Catherine, Jack and Brooke; sister and brother-in-law, Anne Valentine and Don Pfeiffer, Cammarillo, Calif. Born in Hart County on June 20, 1934, he was the son of the late Robert and Anzibell Whiten Weaver. He was a retired auto body shop repairman, owner of John's Body Shop and was Baptist. Mr. Weaver was preceded in death by brothers, Lawrence Weaver and Joe Weaver; and sisters, Doris James and M.B. James. Survivors include daugh ters and sons-in-law, Susan and Stewart Berryman and Christie and Gary Dove, all of Royston; sister, Bobbie Woodall, Bowman; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Horace Wilson GILLSVILLE - Horace Wilson, 73, died Monday, January 5, 2009, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, following a sud den illness. Bom on April 19, 1935, in Hall County, he was the son of the late Floyd T. Wilson and Minnie M. Turpin. He was a member of the Lebanon United Methodist Church and also attended Gillsville Baptist Church. Mr. Wilson was retired from the United States Army, hav ing served his country in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He worked in security for Indalex Caradon. Survivors include his wife, Mathey Wilson, Gillsville; sons, Randall Wilson, Cornelia, Chad Wilson and Donnie Wilson, both of Winder, and William Rock Stratton, Lula; daughters, Sandy Mauer, Cumming, Faye Withrow, Flowery Branch, and Shyla Curtin, Gillsville; step daughters, Dahlia Atkins and Bonnie Robin, both of Texas; brothers, Harvey Wilson, Gillsville, and Howard Wilson, Maysville; sisters, Myrtle Cagle, Grace Hewell and Virginia Roberts, all of Gillsville; 25 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchil dren; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives. A member of Hebron Baptist Church and the Dove Sunday School Class, he was retired from Pmdential Insurance Company. Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Wilson.
