Madison Co. Little League signups
ahead, changes announced
Madison County Little League (MCLL) will hold sign-ups Saturday, Jan.
31, and Feb. 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Danielsville Elementary gym for
players ages 8-18.
The MCLL Board of Directors has changed the age structure for 2009, dis
solving the 7-8-year-old mini league.
Eight-year-old players will now be allowed to play in the minor league divi
sion, expanding the age structure for that league to 8-11 years old.
All players league age 7 are required to play in the pitching machine division
offered by the Madison County Recreation Department.
BIG LEAGUE OFFERED
In another change in 2009, MCLL will offer a Big League Baseball Division
for 17-and-18-years-old players.
This will allow high school age players to participate in this new division.
This start date for this league is later than MCLL’s regular league start
date due to the high school baseball season. Those wishing to participate are
encouraged to attend sign-ups and register, organizers said.
CHALLENGER LEAGUE OFFERED AGAIN
Madison County Little League is again offering Challenger Baseball
League.
This league, administered by District 7, gives children who have special
physical needs and/or developmental delays the opportunity to play baseball.
Approximately 40 kids from Madison, Franklin and Hart counties partici
pated last year.
Those interested in playing in the Challenger League should attend sign-ups
for more information and registration forms.
There is no registration fee for the Challenger Division.
For more information about MCLL sign-ups, or the District Big League or
Challenger League programs, call MCLL president Chuck Branson at 706-
206-2153 or e-mail him at cbranson@collincpa.com.
Subvarsity ... continued from page IB
of Courtney Thomas, who led MCMS with 10 points.
Against Hart County, Kirkland Moon scored 18
points and Tay Curry provided all 10 of his in the fourth
quarter as Madison County pulled out a four-point win.
Courtney Thomas added six points, and Wes Johnson
hit a crucial free throw with 12 seconds left to put
MCMS up by four.
"This game was a total team effort,’’ Myers said.
"Everyone did their part to ensure this win. It's very
rewarding to know that you have a player score 18
points and I still can’t name him the player of the game
outright.’’
Seventh grade girls win
twice after close loss
The seventh grade girls followed a 25-21 overtime
loss to Franklin County Friday with a 23-21 victory
over Hart County Saturday and a 30-16 whipping of
Jefferson Monday. "Playing three games in four days
was tough,” coach Jackson Russum said. “Coaching a
team that works hard everyday is very rewarding.”
Eighth grade boys split games
The Madison County Middle School eighth grade
boys beat Franklin County (44-34) Friday and lost to
Hart County (25-22) Saturday.
Eighth grade girls fall
to Franklin, beat Hart
The MCMS eighth grade girls split their weekend
games, losing to Franklin County (42-36) Friday and
rebounding with a win over Hart County (36-23)
Saturday in what coach David Kendrick called, "prob
ably the best that we have played all year."
In the loss to Franklin County, Elise Coberly led the
team with 12 points, followed by Annabeth Pruett (11),
Nekeia Brown (six) and Emmie Fouche (four).
In the win over Hart County, Madison County went
on a 9-0 run early and never looked back.
The Lady Mustangs distributed the scoring evenly
with Coberly, Pruett and Fouche all scoring nine points.
Chelsea Ford added five off the bench and Christina
Hart and Abby Morgan got in the scorebook with two
points each.
"Everyone got to play, and it did not matter who
played, because we just clicked on all cylinders,”
Kendrick said.
Ninth grade girls lose to Clarke Central
The Madison County girls' freshmen team suffered
its first loss of the season, falling to Clarke Central,
28-24, Saturday.
Clarke Central hit a pair of three-pointers with just
41 seconds left and Madison County missed some key
lay-ups and a free throw down the stretch.
The loss dropped the team to 4-1, but coach William
Trimier noted that the ninth grade team was 1-3 at this
point last year.
LeeLee Sorrells led Madison County with eight
points and Molly Glaze and Olivia Duncan each added
five.
JV boys pull one out over Cedar
The Madison County junior varsity boys were edged
by Habersham Central last Tuesday, 38-33, but rebound
ed with a 35-34 victory over Cedar Shoals in overtime
on Friday. "We played the best defense we have all year
against Cedar Shoals, and it showed on the scoreboard
Friday night,” coach Bryan Bird said.
Madison County trailed Habersham 18-13 at the half
and scored just two points in the third quarter before
making a run in the final period. However, the team ran
out of gas down the stretch.
Madison County faced another halftime deficit
against Cedar Shoals, 20-13, but rallied to force over
time, sparked by an 8-0 run to start the third quarter.
The junior varsity Raiders took an early lead in the
extra period, forcing Cedar Shoals to foul.
"We made just enough free throws to get the one
point win," Bird said.
The coach credited the defensive effort.
"The Cedar win was big for us because it showed us
that even when you don’t have your best night offen
sively, you can still beat good teams if you play solid
defense,” Bird said.
Junior varsity girls rout Cedar Shoals
The Madison County junior varsity girls stormed back
from the holiday break with a 50-20 victory over Cedar
Shoals Friday to up their record to 4-2. “We are learning to
play together as a team,” coach William Trimier said.
Elizabeth Whieldon led Madison County with 10 points,
followed by Jenna Jansen (nine), Abby Atkinson (eight)
and Timia Skelton (eight).
