FIRST ROTARY RAMP OF ‘09 GOES TO SHIRLEY COUCH

dren, and 13 great grand children. She was married 48 years to Weyman Couch, who died as
a result of an accident in 2000. In November of last year she suffered a stroke as a result of a
blood clot in her brain, which left her unable to walk. She contacted Rotary Club of Madison
County, and requested a ramp. Members of the club assembled at her home on Thursday,
Jan. 8, 2009, to a 21-foot ramp for her. She was very grateful, and thanked the crew, and
also told the crew one thing she has learned is that life as we know it can change in just a
moment. The following Rotary members worked on the ramp: Jim Jeffer, Roy Gandy, Erwin

Sign up for ‘Walk Georgia 5 on Feb. 15
By Nancy Bridges

Your challenge is simple:
Spend eight weeks “walking”
Georgia.
Through a program called
Walk Georgia, University
of Georgia’s Cooperative
Extension’s Madison County
Office invites you to spend eight
weeks increasing your physical
activity in a fun, family oriented
way. The goal is to be active,
whether you are walking, bik
ing, or exercising. There are
no meetings to attend because
everything is done online.
Almost 100 Madison County
people have participated in the
program already. Walk Georgia
began in 2008 as an Extension
program to help motivate people
to get active and be healthier.
Through the fall program,
5,402 miles were logged in by
Madison County walkers. The
next eight-week session begins
on March 1 and runs through
April 25. While an e-mail
address is required to register,
individuals without one can
join as part of a team as long as
the team captain has an e-mail
address.
To register: log onto www.
walkgeorgia.org. Registration
will be open Feb. 15 to March
9. Walk Georgia is an online
program where you can log your
real time exercise virtually. Your
time is translated into miles by
the computer on the Web site.
The interactive map of Georgia
allows you to "walk” around
Georgia seeing all the counties.
Each county page has photos
and interesting facts to read. For
each 15 miles you walk, you get
to visit three counties.
Participants can choose to
be on a team of four or walk
individually. A couple of times
each hour, the website updates
and lists the top walkers in each
county and across the state by
first name and last initial. It's fun
to watch your progress and get
in the competitive spirit. Plus,
you may even notice a change
on the bathroom scales.
Through the online map, you
can electronically chart a course
as you walk Georgia. Where you
visit the coast or the mountains,
you are improving your health
along the way. Walk Georgia is
a statewide program, so some
one here in Danielsville could
challenge cousins in Albany,
Waycross, and Canton to a fam
ily Walk Georgia contest.
Family or friends can also
team up to walk together as a
four-person team to log even
more miles. You are almost
guaranteed to walk in every
county on the map if your team
pulls together to log in a total
of 795 miles. That's pretty easy
if everyone logs in two to three
miles each day.
Walk Georgia is a state-wide
program that involves all of
the counties at the same time.
Children and adults can join
in on the fun. In fact, some of
Madison County's top walkers
were some teens who joined
through the Madison County
4-H Program. Madison County
had 36 walkers in the fall. One
participant reported a loss of
four dress sizes and has been
able to get more active since she
began the Walk Georgia pro
gram. The goal is to have at least
50 walkers in the spring 2009
sessions. Don’t forget to sign up
and Walk Georgia in February!
Nancy Bridges is a county
extension agent for Family
and Consumer Sciences for
Oglethorpe and Madison coun
ties.
