Margie Richards/Staff BOY SCOUTS MAKE APPEARANCE AT BOE Boy Scout Troop 328 attended the Jan. 13 Madison County Board of Education (BOE), ful filling one of the requirements towards a Citizenship and Community Badge. The Badge is required for those pursing Eagle Scout status. “They could attend a BOC meeting or BOE meeting and chose us, so we were honored,” assistant superintendent Bonnie Knight said. Green Life Expo set for Jan. 30, 31 at Classic Center The Green Life Expo will be held Friday, Jan. 30, and Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Classic Center in Athens. This event is the first public expo showcasing local environmentally friendly exhibits and seminars, according to a press release. Friday will showcase green concepts and products for business and industry. Speakers will hold sessions on topics such as environmentally friendly office cleaning supplies, LEED building processes and certi fication, being energy efficient in the workplace, solar electricity for business owners and water conservation efforts. Saturday will showcase green seminars and exhib its for homeowners with topics on low-cost and environmentally-friendly cleaning products, green parties, home energy conservation, a town-hall style meeting on eco-friendly living in the Athens area, a movie about the benefits of getting children outdoors and environmental education, composting and creat ing a green garden. The expo hall will feature local environmentally focused businesses and products, offering information and eco-friendly giveaways. There will also be a fami ly friendly children's area with "earth friendly games” and a natural playscape, and a 22-foot earth balloon where children will learn about different climate zones and diverse landscapes from the outside, then venture inside to look at the earth from the inside out. Hard to recycle items will also be accepted during the expo, including: CDs, DVDs and VHS tapes, eye glasses, shoes, compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) plastic grocery bags and film plastic, electronics and batteries.
