location.

invited. We want to see it all.”

Lady Raiders .
Lampe said.
Only four Lady Raiders got in the scorebook, but
they all reached double figures.
Courtney Freeman led Madison County with 18,
followed by Lauren Smith (16), Arnold (14) and
Kayla Freeman (11).
Madison County is now tied atop the subregion
standings with Clarke Central with just one loss.
But more importantly, the team might be starting to
play its best basketball.
“And that’s the key," Lampe said.
Lady Raiders rally past
no. 1 ranked Lady Lions
Madison County rallied from a 12-point second half
deficit to beat Franklin County, Class AAA's no. 1
team, 58-51 on its own floor Saturday.
. continued from page IB
Courtney Freeman led Madison County with 20
points, and Shantydra Arnold had a big night with 16.
Also helping to fuel the rally was Lauren Smith,
who came off the bench in the second half and scored
10 points.
However, the MVP of the night might have been the
Lady Raider defense — especially late in the game.
"They (the Lady Lions) didn't get an open look in
the fourth quarter.” coach Dan Lampe said.
Madison County trailed 31-19 early in the second
half, but worked the lead down to just five points
heading into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Raiders then dominated the final period,
outscoring Franklin County 20-8.
Madison County closed the game by hitting 7-of-8
free throws in the last 39 seconds.
The Lady Raiders warmed for the game by running
Apalachee off the court Friday night in a 78-35 win.
Courtney Freeman led Madison County with 31
points, 24 of which came in the first half.
Raiders
continued from page IB
dribbled to the arc and put up a three as time
expired.
His shot banked off the glass and rolled around
the rim before falling in, sending the Raider
bench and crowd into a frenzy.
“We could have folded the tent, but we didn’t,"
Crouse said of his team’s rally in regulation.
Madison County squandered a 59-56 lead in
overtime, but fought back in the waning moments
to take a 61-60 edge on a Chad Griffeth lay-up
with 15 seconds left.
But Clarke Central’s Chad Witcher hit a pair of
free throws with seven seconds left, and Bradley
Raines couldn’t convert a game-winning attempt
on the other end as the Gladiators escaped a
second-straight upset in Danielsville.
Madison County stunned the Gladiators, 65-61,
in overtime last year, but was left wondering
what could have been this time.
Crouse said late-game scenarios are stressed
in practice, but haven’t worked out as planned in
games lately.
“We just don’t seem to execute,” Crouse said.
Losses handed down
in different fashion
The Raiders had a rough weekend on the court
with two very different types of losses.
Madison County fell in the final moments to
Apalachee, 54-52, Friday. But the Raiders’ 68-39
loss to Franklin County Saturday was all but over
by halftime.
The Raiders trailed 40-22 at the half and then
scored just five points in the third quarter.
Madison County had just one scorer reach double
figures, Seth Fleming, who finished with 12.
In the loss to Apalachee, Patrick McCrary led
the Raiders with 14 points and Reterrium Davis
added 11.
FIRST IN WRESTLING
TOURNAMENT
Dylan and Dawson Legg took first place at the
recent Dahlonega Goldmine Classic wrestling
tournament. Dylan and Dawson, 6-year-old twins,
wrestle for the Madison County Grapplers under
coach Mitch McGhee and also for the Wrestling
Academy out of Gwinnett County. Dylan, with a
record of 23-3 in his weight class, has won seven
tournaments this season. Dawson, with a record
of 27-1 in his weight class, has won eight tourna
ments this season and placed second at the Dixie
Nationals, a national tournament with kids from
all over the country.

Madison County Little League
signups ahead Jan. 31 and Feb. 7, changes
Madison County Little League
(MCLL) will hold baseball and soft-
ball sign-ups Saturday, Jan. 31. and
Feb. 7. from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at
the Danielsville Elementary gym for
players ages 8-18.
The MCLL Board of Directors
has changed the age structure for
2009, dissolving the 7-8-year-old
mini league due to a decline in par
ticipation, organizers said, “and com
ments by parents when it came to our
7-8-year-old all-stars (special games)
tournament.”
Eight-year-old players will now be
allowed to play in the minor league
division, expanding the age structure
for that league to 8-11 years old.
All players league age 7 are
required to play in the pitch
ing machine division offered by
the Madison County Recreation
Department. “We will continue to
participate in the 7-8-year-old special
games tournament” organizers said.
BIG LEAGUE OFFERED
In another change in 2009, MCLL
will offer a Big League Baseball
Division for 17-and-18-years-old
players.
This will allow high school age
players to participate in this new
division.
This start date for this league is
later than MCLL’s regular league
start date due to the high school base
ball season. This division is a District
7 program and will be administered
by District 7. Madison County Little
League would like to form complete
teams to participate in this division.
Games will be played against other
big league teams in the district and
also with teams around the state.
Those wishing to participate are
encouraged to attend sign-ups and
register, organizers said.
CHALLENGER LEAGUE
OFFERED AGAIN
Madison County Little League is
again offering Challenger Baseball
League.
This league, administered by
District 7, gives children who have
special physical needs and/or devel
opmental delays the opportunity to
play baseball.
“To some of our kids, it is dream
come true that they never thought
would be possible.” organizers said.
“Last year was the first year for this
program and it was a great success."
Approximately 40 kids from
Madison, Franklin and Hart counties
participated last year.
"These players were amazing, and
they all had a great time,” organiz
ers said. "The volunteers (adult and
youth) that participated as coaches
and buddies were overwhelmed by
attitude, effort and excitement of
the Challenger players. They came
away with a different perspective on
what is truly important when playing
the great game of baseball and how
baseball should be played.”
Those interested in playing in the
Challenger League should attend
sign-ups for more information and
registration fonns.
There is no registration fee for the
Challenger Division.
HELP WANTED
Organizers of MCLL also ask for
volunteers — coaches, team moms
and "buddies” — to assist with the
Challenger League.
“The idea is to allow the parents
of players to be able to sit back and
watch their children play baseball,"
organizers said.
Those adults interested in volun
teering are required to fill out an
application at sign-ups and submit
to a background check before being
eligible to participate.
For more information about
MCLL sign-ups, or the District Big
League or Challenger League pro
grams, call MCLL president Chuck
Branson at 706-206-2153 or e-mail
him at cbranson@collincpa.com.
