Yeargin named to Dean’s list
Christine Yeargin, Hull, has been named to the Dean’s List for fall
semester at Brenau University, Gainesville.
Dean’s List students must maintain a 3.6 grade point average while
carrying at least 15 semester hours of course work.

from Youth Challenge Program
COLBERT SCIENCE FAIR WINNERS
Fifty-five projects were created for the Colbert Elementary
Science Fair by fifth grade students under the guidance
of Science Teacher Susan Hensley and Challenge Teacher
Elizabeth Hicks. “I was so impressed by the diversity of the
topics,” said one science fair judge. Principal Billy Heaton
said the staff is proud of the students. The students and
projects that will represent Colbert at the County Science
Fair are Travis Atkinson, “Will Cooked Beans Grow?”;
Luke Mercardante, “Does Color Affect Taste?”; Alyssa
Maxwell, “ Which Paper Plate Will Carry The Most Weight
Without Buckling?”; Eli Dixon, “Which Model Bridge Is the
Strongest?”; and Samantha Kincaid, “Does Smell Affect

stock show team has represented the county well this year,
bringing home top awards from all over the state. Pictured

FIRST IN THE AREA COMPETITION
The Madison County Middle School FFA Livestock Judging
Team won first place in the area competition out of 24
teams and is on its way to compete at the state level in
March. Kevin Jones had the highest individual score out

A Madison County teen was
among more than 122 youth grad
uating from the Georgia National
Guard’s Youth Challenge Academy
at commencement ceremonies
held in Macon on Saturday, Dec.
20, 2008, at the Macon City
Auditorium.
Randall S. Carroll Jr., of
Danielsville is a member of Class
# 2008A of the Fort Stewart-based
YCA program.
Georgia's Youth Challenge is a
22- week residential youth pro
gram for teens aged 16-18 who
have dropped out of school. The
military styled program provides
teens with the opportunity to com
plete basic academic courses lead
ing to a high school diploma or
GED. The voluntary program also
provides teens valuable life skills
training emphasizing academic,
physical fitness and personal disci
pline, leaders said.
“I'm honored to participate in the
Youth Challenge graduation and
I congratulate Randall upon his
graduation,” Lt. Governor Casey
Cagle said. “ I am very proud of
each student who chooses to put
circumstances in the past and move
forward toward a bright future and
a chance at real success,”
This is the second address Lt
Governor Cagle has delivered to a
YCA graduating class before hun
dreds of families and friends.
GMA sponsoring ‘If I were mayor’ essay contest
The Georgia Municipal Association is askin sixth graders to write an
essay on what changes they would make as mayor of their city.
Essays must address the subject with the first sentence beginning, “If
I were mayor, I would ...” for a chance to win a $250 savings bond
and other prizes.
The GMA selects a winner for each of the state’s 12 districts. The
winners, along with their parents and teachers, will be recognized at a
luncheon in April in Atlanta.
Students can obtain entry forms from their teachers.
Mail entries to "Attention: Essay Contest/ 201 Pryor Street SW/
Atlanta, Ga. 30303."
Essays must by received by the GMA by March 6. Submissions
must not exceed 350 words.

Local students earn Piedmont honors
SPELLING BEE WINNERS
Colbert Elementary School faculty and staff have announced
the school’s spelling bee winners. “We are very proud of these
students and wish them luck as they advance to the Madison
County Spelling Bee, which will be held at Danielsville
Elementary on February 3,2009,” teachers said. Pictured are
first place winner, Cortney Stevenson, fourth grade; second
place winner, Ally Ward, fifth grade; and third place winner,
Samantha Kincaid, fifth grade.
MIRACLE YEARS HOLDS LITERACY
WORKSHOP
The Pre-K students and Parents had the opportunity to
attend a literacy workshop at Miracle Years of Learning in
Colbert. Every family that participated made a book and
every book was different. The families decided the subject
and text of their very own book. These will be shared with
all the students in the classrooms over the next couple of
months. The families also had the opportunity to make
a cloth snowman out of a dishcloth that they took home
with them. “These were great activities for the whole fam
ily and everyone seem to enjoy themselves,” teachers said.
“The children were excited to be doing activities with their
parents.”
The following students from Madison County have been awarded
academic honors for the recently completed fall semester at
Piedmont College.
Students named as Dean's Scholars for the semester have earned
a perfect 4.0 grade-point average. They include, from Comer: Molly
Atkinson and Arthur J. Brown; from Danielsville: Christy Thomas,
and from Hull: Teresa Bishop, Melissa Elrod, Randell A. King,
Zackary Seymour and Josh Strickland.
Students named to the Dean’s List have earned a grade-point aver
age of 3.5 to 3.99. They include, from Comer: Brandy Mattox and
Tonya Murray; from Danielsville: Karen Rhodes, and from Hull:
Mary Beth Yeary.
North Georgia College and
State University, Dahlonega, has
named several local students to
the Dean's List for fall semester.
Students earning at least a 3.5
G.P.A. or better and carrying 12
or more credit hours are named to
the Dean’s List.
Those named to the dean’s list
were: Sara Brubaker, Comer;
Misty Parker, Danielsville; and
Brittani Crane, Danielsville.
Truett-McConnnell announces honors
Truett-McConnell College, Cleveland, announced that two Madison
County students received academic recognition for the fall semester 2008,
according to a press release.
Howell Blaine Seagraves, Ha, was named to the Dean’s List with a
semester average of 3.5 or higher.
Jason Lamar Brown, Comer, was named to the President's List with a
perfect semester average of 4.0.

Erin M. Holliman, Comer;
were named to the 2008 fall-
term Dean’s List at Abraham
Baldwin Agricultural College,
according to an announcement
by Vice President and Dean
of Academic Affairs Niles
Reddick.

attained a minimum grade point
average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale
and carried at least 12 hours of
academic work.
Buller named to honor
roll at Mars Hill
Rachel Mellika Buller, Comer,
was named to the Honor Roll of
the Academic Dean at the end of
the Fall, 2008 semester at Mars
Hill College. To qualify for the
Dean’s List, students must earn
a grade-point average of 3.5 on a
minimum of 12 semester hours,
and carry no grade below a C.
