School bus fight results in arrest,
wreck on Sandy Springs Road
A fight between several
teens on a school bus last week
resulted in the arrest of at least
one of them, while the bus
ran off the road as the bus
driver attempted to deal with
the altercation.
Kenyatta Dequan Hillsman,
17, of 366 Fox Trail Road,
Athens, was charged with bat
tery, disorderly conduct and
disrupting public school pen
alty.
The other teens involved in
the altercation were juveniles.
According to the incident
report, a teen was struck on
the back of the head by another
teen while the bus was travel
ing on Sandy Springs Road.
Hillsman reportedly came
from the back of the bus and
struck the first teen in the
face. Hillsman and the second
teen reportedly continued to
strike the first teen, keeping
him trapped in his seat. The
bus driver was forced to stop
the bus to deal with the situa
tion, and mistakenly failed to
put the brake on all the way
causing the bus to leave the
road and strike a power pole
guide wire before coming to a
stop. A tape of the incident is
being held by the high school
for hearings, according to the
report.

Sheriff’s office offers
extra security checks
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is now offering
security checks for homeowners who plan to be out of
town.
According to Major Shawn Bums, chief deputy, residents
can come by the sheriff’s office and fill out a "request for
security check” form that lets deputies know they need to
provide extra patrol by their homes during a certain period
of time. The request will last for a period of 30 days from
the time the form is filled out, but the request may be
extended by calling the sheriff’s office at 706-795-6202, or
by coming by the office at 1436 Hwy. 98 West.
‘Crown Royal Bandit’
pleads not guilty
The “Crown Royal Bandit” who was arrested in Madison
County last April for allegedly robbing 28 banks over the
course of 11 years in and around the metro Atlanta area
has changed his plea from guilty to not guilty.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported this past week
that Bruce Allen Hughes, who allegedly used a signature
purple velvet Crown Royal bag to carry away his stolen
cash, was scheduled to enter a guilty plea on federal
charges last Thursday.
However, Hughes changed his mind and pled not
guilty.
"Mr. Hughes has changed his mind and wants a jury
trial," his federal defender, Colin Garrett, told U.S. District
Court Judge Richard Story
Hughes was arrested in Madison County after the sher
iff’s department received a tip that he was living at a resi
dence on Beverly Lane in southern Madison County.
Hughes was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges
of conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act Robbery, three counts
of armed bank robbery and four counts of use and pos
session of a firearm during the commission of a violent
felony.
