set for Feb. 28
The Madison County High
School baseball team will hold
its annual barbecue chicken sale
Saturday, Feb. 28, at the MCHS
freshman academy building (the
old middle school building) from
4-6 p.m.
Meals cost $7 a plate. Orders are
available for pick-up only.
Madison County
Rec Dept, offering
fitness class
The Madison County Recreation
Department is offering a six-week
fitness class at the Danielsville
Elementary Gym on Tuesday and
Thursday evenings through March
19 from 7-8 p.m.
The classes are to promote
an “active lifestyle,” according
to organizers, noting that active
adults are less likely to become
obese and diabetic or experience
heart disease, some forms of can
cer and depression.
Sally Bolemon will instruct the
class, having instructed classes at
the YWCO, University of Georgia
and Madison County High
School.
Anyone registering now will pay
$40, plus a $5 late fee. For more
information, contact the rec dept,
at 706-795-6270.
Spring Soccer
Registration
runs through Feb. 27
Registration for the Madison
County Recreation Department
spring soccer leagues runs until
Feb. 27 Mondays through Fridays
from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the recre
ation department's main office at
1345 Highway 98 West.
The recreation department will
offer the following divisions: a
12-and-under co-ed division and a
15-and-under co-ed division.
The age control date for spring
soccer is Jan. 1, 2009. Players
must be 10 by that date and cannot
turn 16 before Jan. 1, 2009.
A copy of the players’ birth
certificate at registration must be
provided at registration. The reg
istration fee is $25 per participant.
This includes their game T-shirt.
Out-of-county participants will
pay an additional $25. For more
information, contact the recreation
department at 795-6270.

registration
runs through Feb. 27
Registration for the Madison
County Recreation Department’s
T-ball and pitching machine
leagues runs until Feb. 27 Mondays

The recreation department will
offer a non-competitive co-ed
league for players ages 5-6, a
pitching machine league for boys
ages 7-8 and a pitching machine
league for girls ages 7-8.
The age control date for T-Ball
is May 1, 2009. Players must be
five by that date in order to play
and cannot turn seven before May
1, 2009.
The age control date for the
boys’ and girl’s pitching machine
leagues is May 1, 2009. Players
cannot turn nine before May 1,
2009.
The May 1 age control date has
been adopted to be in line with the
Little League age control date.

Madison Co. TD club
hosting ‘battle zone
paintball’
The Madison County Touchdown
Club invites all Madison County
High School students and the rest
of the community to its first “battle
zone paintball” Feb. 28 from noon
until dark.
Those wishing to sign-up can
contact coach Mike Haynes at
Madison County High School. The
school’s phone number is 706-
795-2197.
The cost is $35 to use paint from
the battleground. The fee is $45 for
those bringing their own.
Paint guns can be rented for $5.
Those interested can also sign up
at Sports and More or contact Greg

Madison Co. Cruisers
schedule starts April 18
The Madison County Cruisers
— a local automobile organiza
tion — starts its schedule April 18
at the Danielsville City Park, the
first of six shows in 2009 at that
location.
All shows run from 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m. “All makes and mod
els are welcome — rats, finished
and unfinished," organizers said.
“As long as it has wheels and an
engine, it’s invited. We want to
see it all.”
Other show dates are May 16,
June 20, July 18, Aug. 15, Sept. 19
and Oct. 17. The October date is a
special cruise-in, organizers note.
The registration fee for all shows
is $5. For more information, con

Subvarsity Basketball
Madison Go. junior varsity, freshmen finish 7-6
Tray Burton scored 20 points last Tuesday, but
it wasn’t enough to carry Madison County’s junior
varsity squad past Apalachee in a 49-48 loss to
Apalachee in its season finale.
The team finished 7-6.
The Madison County freshmen team also finished
7-6, losing to Loganville 50-48 at the buzzer.
Eighth grade girls’ season
ends against Jefferson
The Madison County Middle School eighth grade
girls’ team bowed out of the region tournament last
week, losing to Jefferson 44-40 in the semifinals.
Elise Coberly led MCMS with 17 points in the final
game of the season, followed by Annabeth Pruett
(nine points) and Nekeia Brown (eight).
"It was kind of a sad and emotional moment for me
because it was the last time I would get to coach this
team, and I have coached them for two years,” coach
David Kendrick said. “They never gave up and were
always ready to learn more. I will really miss this
group next year.”
Madison County reached the semifinals after a
23-point outburst from Coberly against Stephens
County in the first round.
The Lady Mustangs won that game 38-26, also get
ting offensive contributions from Pruett (12 points),
Brown (six) and Macy Rutledge (four).
Kendrick noted that Rutledge “played the best game
that I have ever seen her play at point guard.”

Smith, Adams named MCHS Athletes of the Week
Madison County High
School basketball player
Lauren Smith and wrestler
Tyler Adams have been
selected as Athletes of the
Week for Feb. 2-7 by the
school’s athletic department.
Smith was selected for
her performance in Madison
County’s 55-51 win over
Clarke Central Feb. 6, scoring
17 points.
Adams earned the honor
for winning the 215-lb. region
SMITH ADAMS
individual championship as a
no. 4 seed Feb. 7 at the region
tournament. Adams defeated
the no. 1 and no. 2 seeds in
route to the title.
Kayla Freeman earned
Athlete of the week honors on
the girls’ side last week with
a double-double in Madison
County’s Jan. 30 win over
Winder-Barrow.
Reterrium Davis was
selected for the boys, scoring
24 points and grabbing nine
boards in the Raiders' Jan. 30
loss to Winder-Barrow and 15.
He also scored 15 points in
Madison County’s Jan. 27 loss
to Cedar Shoals.

on to the state sectionals this week in Brunswick. Madison County is sending six wres
tlers to the sectionals.

“I think it was far above what most people
expected, especially out of our region,” Houston
said. “So I thought it was really good. I was really
excited for the boys.”
This number ties the most wrestlers Madison
County has advanced out of the region tournament
in Houston's five seasons with the team.
This was an unlikely year to do it, too.
“Having so many underclassmen, I think that's a
pretty good number,” Houston said.

Rockdale County won the region title.
The state sectionals are new to the state tourna
ment format this year.
The top eight finishers at sectionals move on to a
16-man bracket at state.
Any Raider wrestlers winning two matches are
in.
Houston noted that the East Sectionals include tra
ditional state powers like Tucker, Marist, Southwest
Dekalb, Glynn County and Effingham County.

1,116-1,058. Threlkeld sparked the win with a
score of 285, followed by J.S. Fielding (281),
Casey Brown (276) and Nathan Coker (274).
Ryan Bridges (260) competed, but his score was
dropped.
