Madison Co. Library announces news, events
The Madison County Library has
announced its news and events for
February:
•Friends Membership Drive: “The
membership drive continues through
March; please lend your support,”
organizers said. All money raised
by the Friends of the Library goes
back into the library through book
purchasing, program funding and
special initiatives. The Spring Book
Sale will be March 20 to March
28, open during all library hours.
A special preview sale for Friends
members only will be Thursday,
March 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. “If you
have any free time between now
and the book sale volunteers are
desperately needed to begin sorting
the room full of donated books,”
organizers said. Those interested in
helping can contact Sara Carter at
706-795-2952.
•Pajama Story time: Thursday,
Feb. 26, at 7 p.m. “Snuggle up in
your jammies with your favorite
stuffed animals and listen to bedtime
stories at the library,” organizers
said. "We will have a small snack,
peaceful winter tales and a song or
two.” This program is appropriate
for all ages.
•Library Sewing Group: This
Wednesday afternoon craft group
meets from 1 to 3 in the general
purpose room. They work on new
and ongoing projects in all mediums
and with members of all ages. This
month’s new project is different
techniques of mg making — locker
hooking, crocheting strips of fabric
and old fashion hooking. They will
also be crocheting baskets. “If you
have a project you need some help
with or just want to share please
come join them on Wednesdays,”
organizers said.
•Young Adult Book Discussion:
This month they will meet
Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 4:30 p.m.
They are reading “Septimus Heap”
by Angie Sage. The program is free
and includes free food.
•Chapter Book Revue: Every
Tuesday and Thursday afternoon
beginning at 4:30 “Miss Jennifer”
will be in the lobby reading from
“Nancy Drew Secret of the Old
Clock” by Carolyn Keene.
•Preschool and Toddler Story
Time: "Your child's first introduc
tion to reading: read with them and
watch them succeed!” organizers
said. Story time includes stories,
finger-plays, songs and crafts for
literacy-based fun. It is open to
children ages 2 to 5. This month’s
themes are: Valentine’s Day, the
Letter Y and Birds.
•Computer Classes: Free and open
to everyone. "You don’t have to
be nervous about surfing the web,”
organizers said. ‘This month’s four-
part series will get you connected.”
Week one is an introduction and
brief history of the Internet. Week
two will get you started with email,
get your very own address for free.
The third week will make sending
and receiving attachments a breeze.
Week four will be a fun-filled
Internet scavenger hunt and Google
training. Sessions are on Tuesdays
from 2 to 3 p.m., Tuesday from 7
to 8 p.m., or Wednesdays from 11
a.m. to noon. “Please pre-register
as this is not a drop-in-style class,”
organizers said. “Our evening class
has been changed from Thursday to
Tuesday due to staff scheduling.”
JACKSON EMC CREWS HELP OUT IN KENTUCKY
After helping to restore power to around 30,000 customers, three Jackson Electric
Membership Corporation (EMC) crews returned last week to Georgia after nearly
two weeks in Western Kentucky, where they worked to restore power to customers
of West Kentucky Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation (RECC). At the height of
the storm, West Kentucky RECC suffered 1,500 broken power poles, and all of the
cooperative’s more than 35,000 customers in a six-county area were without power.
Jackson EMC’s comprised of eight employees from Jefferson, six from Oakwood
and six from Neese worked alongside personnel from West Kentucky RECC who
have worked around the clock with local and out-of-state crews since last week’s
storm. Pictured (L-R) are Alan Simmons, Lineman, Neese District; Darren Bradberry,
Lineman, Neese District; and Matt Elrod, Lineman, Jefferson District, working in
Farmington, Ky., Saturday, Feb. 7.
ROTARY BUILDS RAMP FOR JOHNSON
Rachel Johnson recently fell off her porch steps and received
three broken ribs and toes. She was home alone, and lay outside
for four to six hours before she was found. Now she’s using a
wheelchair to get around and needed a ramp. Rebecca Finch
called Rotary and requested a ramp for her. The Johnsons
have lived in Madison County for over 32 years, and once
lived in Colbert. Her father, Herman L. Armstrong, was the
Depot Railroad Agent there for many years. She has also
worked in Athens at Dupont and General Times for several
years. The Johnsons said they really appreciated the work of
the Rotarians and donated $400 toward the construction of
the ramp, so that someone else could receive one. Workers on
the ramp included Roy Gandy, Pat Quinn, Jerry Bond, Artry
Bishop, Bob Anderson, Calvin Ward, Jack Chandler, Alton
Rowe, Erwin Hardeman, Jerry Black and Johny Bond.
