medicine in Jefferson. In 1966
he returned to school at Emory
University, where he completed a
residency in general surgery.
He served on the faculty at
Emory from 1970-72. In July
1972 he joined practice with Dr.
Jack McDonald at the Surgery
Clinic where he retired at the
end of January, 2005. His staff
appointments included Athens
Regional Medical Center and St.
Mary’s Hospital, both of which
he served several terms as Chief
of Surgery and BJC Hospital in
Commerce.
Dr. Muse served in the Georgia
Army National Guard from 1966,
and retired as Brigadier General
in 2002. He was active as a fel
low in the American College of
Surgeons and the Southeastern
Surgical Congress and a mem
ber of the American Medical
Association. American Society of
Abdominal Surgeons, American
Society of General Surgeons,
American Society of Military
Surgeons, Georgia Surgical
Society. Medical Association of
Georgia, Society of American
Gastrointestinal Endoscopic
Surgeons, and the Society of
Medical Consultants of Armed
Forces.
Dr. Muse was a member of
the Athens Rotary Club and dual
member of Masonic Lodges Unity
Lodge #36 F&M and Johnnies
Hill Lodge #748, Pendergrass.
Survivors include his wife,
Helen Stewart Muse; daughters,
Allyson Muse, Athens. Elizabeth
(Michael) Layne, Atlanta and
Andrea (Lou) Jerman, Granby,
Conn.; granddaughters, Kay lee,
Sydney and Annabelle Jerman;
uncle. Herman Gable; aunts,
Mary Kaylor and Erma Gravitt;
and numerous cousins.

Haven Baptist Church with Dr.
Stewart Simms and Dr. Jim

Norton, 75, died Friday. February
13, 2009, at her residence.
Born on January 4, 1934, in
Banks County, she was the daugh
ter of the late Howard and Hattie
Chitwood Martin. Mrs. Norton
attended Alto Congregational
Holiness Church and had pre
viously worked as a Certified
Nursing Assistant before retire
ment. She was preceded in death
by her husband, Rass Norton;
daughter, Virginia Elaine Moore;
brothers, Charles Martin and
James Clifford Martin; and a sis
ter. Marie Fowler.

Bennie Patton
CORNELIA - Bennie Lee
Patton, 74. died Thursday,
February 12, 2009, at the resi
dence of his daughter.
Born on March 12, 1934, in
Habersham County, he was the
son of the late Gordon and Lucy
Patton. He was a member of the
Demorest Church of God, was
retired from the Civil Service
United States Forestry Service
with 35 years of service, and was
formerly employed by Fieldale
Farms. After his retirement, he
was a very active volunteer of
Meals on Wheels. Mr. Patton was
preceded in death by his wife,
Betty Willis Patton; daughter.
Maxine Varnes; and two grand
children.
Survivors include a daughter
and son-in-law, Kathy Patton
and Bobby Lee Williams,
Cornelia; son and daughter-in-
law, Rocky and Sheliah Potts,
Martin; sister. Julie Patton Smith,
Cleveland; brother and sister-in-

LILBURN - Hershel
Alex Payne, 86, formerly of
Hollingsworth Community, died
Sunday. February 8, 2009. at his
residence.
Born in Hollingsworth, Banks
County, on April 30,1922, he was
the son of the late Seward Hershel
and Elsie Lane Payne. He gradu
ated from Piedmont College with
a Bachelor of the Arts Degree in
Business, and was a member of
the Northside Baptist Church in
Dacula. He was a
retired supervisor
from Lockheed
Corporation
with 45 years of
dedicated service, and was a vet
eran, having served in the United
States Army during World War
II. He loved working outside in
the garden and loved cats, dogs,
and country music, loved ones
stated.
Survivors include his wife,
Ethel Grant Payne, Lilburn;
son and daughter-in-law, Dr.
Dan Payne and Donna Payne,
Winder; sister, Pricilla Mabry,
Hollingsworth; and a brother,
David E. Payne. Baldwin.

Wednesday. February 11. in
the chapel of Whitfield Funeral

“Pop” Payne. 79. died Thursday,
February 12. 2009, at his resi
dence following an extended ill
ness.
Born in Habersham County
on September 16, 1929, he was
the son of the late Henry and
Florence Parker Payne. He was
employed by Mt. Vernon Mills
and attended Mt. View Baptist
Church. He was an avid racing
fan, loved ones stated. Mr. Payne
was preceded in death by his
first wife. Hazel Payne; sons,
Timothy Payne, Randy Yarber
and Donald Yarber; brothers,
John Henry Payne and Lincoln
Payne; sister, Lola Mae Smith;
great-grandchildren, MacKenzie

at the Lanier Park Hospital in
Gainesville.
Born on June 5, 1942. in
Fayette County, she was the
daughter of the late Elmore and
Nora Burdette Jackson. She was
a graduate of Fayetteville High
School and was a member of
the Level Grove Baptist Church.
She was a retired claim represen
tative with the Social Security
Administration with over 30
years of dedicated service. Mrs.
Rice was preceded in death by a
son, Dennis Rice.
Survivors include her husband,
the Rev. Terry M. Rice, Alto;
daughter, Kim Cody, Americus;
daughter-in-law, Angela Rice,

Walter Rucker
CUMMING - Walter Harrison
Rucker Sr., died Friday. February
13, 2009, following a long ill
ness.
Born on July 17, 1926, in
Elbert County, he was the son
of James Harrison and Lillian
Burris Rucker. After graduat
ing Middleton High School in
Elberton. he attended North
Georgia Tech to
become a radio
operator and
used his skills
while serv-
ing on the USS
Arkansas in World War II, where
he enlisted in the Navy at age
18. He was also in the Army
Reserves for a number of years
following World War II.
Survivors include a son, Walter
H. Rucker Jr., Athens; daugh
ters and sons-in-law, Kim Rucker
and Phillip Davis, Jefferson,
and Ann Rucker and Richard
Buice, Cumming; grandchildren.

Charles Russo
COMMERCE Charles
Anthony Russo, 83, died Friday,
February 13. 2009, at his resi
dence.
He was born November 4,
1925. in Highland Falls, N.Y.,
the son of the late Charles A.
and Frances Roser Russo. He
was a member of St. Catherine
Laboure' Catholic Mission. He
was a loving husband, father, and
a career United States Marine
Corp veteran. Mr. Russo was pre
ceded in death by a son, Charles
Russo, II.
Mr. Russo started his military
career on November 10, 1942
when he enlisted in the Marine
Corps. He went
through basic
recruit training,
advanced infan-
try training and
field artillery and anti-aircraft
gun school. Then he served in
the Asiatic Pacific from March
12, 1943 - November 12, 1945.
Mr. Russo was wounded in
action April 1, 1945. He partici
pated in action on Okinawa from
April 1, 1945 - April 14. 1945
and Eniwetok from February
24, 1944 - March 2, 1944. He
was awarded the Certificate of
Satisfactory Service and Good
Conduct Medal on November 9,
1945. On January 23, 1946 Mr.
Russo received the Certificate
of Honorable and Satisfactory
Service in WWII active duty rank
of Corporal. Charles and Mary
were married in June of 1947. In
March of 1953. he was recalled
to active duty and made the deci
sion to become a career Marine.
He served as Staff Sergeant
with the American Land Forces
Middle-East Lebanon in 1958.
In January of 1963 he was award
ed the Purple Heart, Asiatic-
Pacific Campaign Medal. Navy
Occupation Service Medal (Asia)
and National Defense Service
Medal. Mr. Russo completed
four tours of duty in Vietnam,
attained rank of Master Gunnery
Sergeant (E-9) and retired in July
of 1973, having served honorably
for 28 years and 6 months.
Survivors include his wife,
Marion Bopp Russo. Commerce;
sons. David M. Russo, Sr.,
owner of New Age Hearing Aid
Center, and Leo J. Russo, both
of Commerce; brother, David
Sherman, Cornwall, N.Y.; sister.
Nancy Shiner, Florida; grand
children. Kimberly Kay Russo
and David M. Russo, II; great
grandchildren, Carley Russo and
Aaryah Russo.
A funeral mass was held
Monday, February 16, at St.
Catherine Laboure' Catholic
Mission with Father Liem
Nguyen officiating. Interment
followed in the Evergreen
Memorial Gardens.

extended illness.

Bessie Mae Simmons Savage.
She attended Leatherwood
Baptist Church, and enjoyed
playing with her stuffed animals
and looking at magazines. Miss
Savage was preceded in death by
a sister, Julie Crowe; and brother,
Woodrow Savage.

he was a United States Army
Veteran of the Korean Conflict,

Thomas and Birtie Mae Whitworth
Savage. Mr.
Savage was pre

Barrow
County,
he was the
son of the
late E.M.
and Lois
England Williams. He was retired
from U.S. Tobacco Company,
where he worked in sales and
marketing. Mr. Williams was pre
ceded in death by his wife. Peggy
Sue Gunter Williams.
Survivors include a daughter
and son-in-law, Kim Williams
and David Saxton, Bogart; son
and daughter-in-law, Eddy and
Emma Williams, Athens; his
fiance. Kathy Burrell, Blairsville;
brothers, Harold Williams and
Gary Williams, both of Athens,
Eddie Williams, Jefferson;
grandchildren, Steven Ogletree
and Cory Williams.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday, February 11, in the
chapel of Evans Funeral Home
with the Rev. Tom Miles officiat
ing. Burial was in the Evergreen
Memorial Park in Athens.
Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson,
was in charge of arrangements.

COMMERCE - Hezziekiah
Wilson Jr., 75. died Friday.
February 13, 2009, at Athens
Regional Medical Center in
Athens.
Born in Jackson County, he was
the son of the late Hezziekiah and
Carrie Mae Morrison Wilson. He
was Baptist and was retired from
Michelin Tire.
Survivors include his wife,
Lois Jean Archer Wilson.
Commerce; daughters and sons-
in-law, Barbara and Jon Milford
and Mary and Rodney Gary, all
of Commerce, Vickie and John
Russell, Anderson, S.C.; sons and
daughter-in-law, David and Lisa
Wilson. Cornelia, Daniel Wilson,
Commerce; ten grandchildren;
and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held
Sunday. February 15, at Jackson
Memorial Gardens with Archie
D. Chaney and Carlton Allen
officiating.
Little-Ward Funeral Home,
Commerce, was in charge of
arrangements.

Horace Wilson
CORNELIA - Horace Carlton
Wilson. 69, died Friday, February
13, 2009, at his residence.
Born in Habersham County on
March 10. 1939,
he was the son of
the late George
and Olivia Kelly
Wilson. He
attended the Demorest Church of
God, was a United States Navy
Veteran, and was retired from
Fleming Food Service after 30
years of dedicated service. Mr.
Wilson was preceded in death
by his wife, Helen Imogene
Sinnemon Wilson; step-mother,
Dorothy Wilson; son. William
Darryl Wilson; brothers, Lamar
Wilson, Buck Wilson, Roy
Wilson; and a sister, Mary
Trotter.
Survivors include a daugh
ter and son-in-law. Renee and
Jim Bell, Clarkesville; sons
and daughter-in-law. Ricky and
Teresa Wilson, Alto, and Jeff
Wilson. Demorest; sisters. Martha
Heaton and Carol Wilson, both
of Demorest; brother, Tommy
Wilson. Cleveland; four grand
children; and one great-grand
child.
Funeral services were
held Monday, February 16, at
Whitfield Funeral Home with
the Rev. William Cox officiat
ing. Burial was in the Yonah
Memorial Gardens.
Whitfield Funeral Home,
North Chapel, Demorest, was in
charge of arrangements.
