He was born in Fulton County. Survivors in addition to his parents, include grand parents, Tommy and Sue Fowler, Winder, Ronnie and Beth Autry, Danielsville, and Darrell and Pat Phillips, Winder. Mary Betts ATHENS - Mary Lester Betts, 82, died Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at Arbor Terrace, an assisted living facility in Athens. Born in Royston on September 6, 1926, she was the daugh ter of the late Reece C. Lester Sr. and Leila Mae Darnell Lester. She was the first female president of the Athens Chamber of Commerce, the first Silver Medalist of the Athens Ad Club, first female Athens Jaycees “Boss of the Year”, first female president of the United Way of Northeast Georgia, first female installed in the Georgia Association of Broadcasting Hall of Fame, first Athens Woman of the Year winner, and first to be honored with the coveted Athena Award. In 1996 she established a trust to provide a full four year scholarship annually to a female University of Georgia broadcast journal ism student. Survivors include two sis ters and one brother, Eva Spencer and Blanche Cartey, both of Athens, and Reece C. Lester Jr., Crawford; along with a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 21, at the First Baptist Church of Athens, with Jon Appleton officiating. The Board of Directors for the Classic Center Authority served as pallbearers. Honorary pall bearers included the Athena Award recipients and the Pilot Clubs of Athens. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Evelyn Cagle LULA - Evelyn Laverne Cagle, 76, died Tuesday, February 17, 2009, at New Horizons West Nursing Home, following an extend ed illness. Bom in Hall County, she was the daughter of the late William Jep and Ola Harris Cagle. She was a member of White Hall Baptist Church. Ms. Cagle was preceded in death by brothers, Artis, Ralph, Travis, Virgil and Norman Cagle. Survivors include a sis ter, Gwen Cagle Chapman, Lula; and a number of niec es, nephews and other rela tives. February 26, 2009. Ruth Ann Campbell LULA - Ruth Ann Henikman Campbell, 85, died Saturday, February 21, 2009, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, following complications from open heart surgery. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on May 13,1923, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Erma Voll Henikman. She was a homemaker and was Catholic. Mrs. Campbell was preceded in death by her husband, Charles F. Campbell. She enjoyed cooking, decorating, was an animal enthusiast, a loving grandmother, and an avid supporter of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, loved ones stated. Survivors include daugh ters and son-in-law, Geralyn Campbell, Lula, Shawn and Paul Knight, Cornelia; grandchildren and spouses, Heather and Carsie Bogue, Chriss and Lon Nichols, Paul and Bonney Knight, and Whitney Knight; and a great-grandchild, Logan Bogue. Born in Madison County on July 11, 1918, he was the son of the late Hollis and Myrtie Huff Carrington and was preceded in death by his wife, Drue W. Daniel Carrington; and a sister, Sybil Kidd. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Gwen and Wade Carey, Danielsville; grandson and wife, Brannon and Jenny Claire Carey, Royston; and a brother, Dalton Carrington, Comer. Born on October 19,1923, in Lula, he was the son of the late Timothy D. and Cordelia Duncan Echols. He was a member of the Mt. Carmel Christian Church and the Lula Masonic Lodge F.& A.M. Mr. Echols was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Echols; brothers, James, George and Talmadge Echols; sis ters, Lois Sims and Beulah Tribble. He was a United States Marine Corps veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart of Valor, serving in Iwo Jima during World War II. He was a retired correc tional officer with 30 years of dedicated service with the Atlanta Federal Prison. Survivors include his wife, Glenda Pond Echols, Lula; daughter and son-in- law, Tammy and Brooke Bittinger, Conyers; sons and daughter-in-law, William C. “Billy” Echols Jr., Jasper, Charles Glen “Charlie” and Edie Spence, Murphy, N.C.; grandchildren, Sarah Echols, Elise Echols, Josie Spence, Noah Spence, Clay Bittinger and Beau Bittinger. Born on January 26, 1930, in Franklin County, he was the son of the late Toy Fowler and Bessie Ruth Adams. He was a mechanic in the textile industry and was Baptist. Mr. Fowler was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Sanders; and brother, Leo Fowler. Survivors include his wife, Martha Fowler, Royston; sons, Eddie Fowler, Carnesville, and Wayne Fowler, Canon; daughters, Sandra Bond and Elizabeth Williamson, both of Royston; brother, Garnett Fowler, Royston; sister, Sylvia Jean Jordan, Royston; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She owned and operated the Comer Variety Store and was a longtime active member of Comer Baptist Church. Mrs. Hammond was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Hammond; daughter, Sandra Alice Hardeman; sis ter, Kathleen Pulliam; and brother, James B. “Buck” Benton. Survivors include her son-in-law, Erwin (Sue) Hardeman, Comer; grand daughters, Terri H. (Howell) Seagraves, Ila, and Paula H. (Curtis) Drake, Comer; great-grandchildren, Alicia Seagraves, Mallory Seagraves, Blaine Seagraves, and Autumn Drake; and lov ing friend and caregiver, Mrs. Ida Campbell. Herbert Hayes Sr. TALMO - Herbert Wayne Hayes Sr., 72, passed away Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at his residence following an extended illness. Mr. Hayes was born on September 15, 1936 in Louisville, Ky., to the late Odie Hayes and Pearline Zackery Hayes. He was retired as a self-employed painter and Baptist. Mr. Hayes is survived by his wife, Betty Hayes of Talmo; daughters, Patricia Thomas of California, Beverly Van of Kentucky, Shirley Nokes of Kentucky, Helen Hayes of Talmo and Pamela Watt of Gainesville; sons, H. Mr. Jackson had resided in Winder since 2000 and had attended Sharon Baptist Church. He was a retired furniture upholsterer. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Faye Taylor Jackson; grandchildren, Michael McGee, Cherie Jackson, Daniel Jackson, Alex Jackson and Amber Jackson; sisters, Marinda Sulfredge, Kentucky, and Gertrude Roberson, Ohio. She was a patient represen tative, having worked with the Ty Cobb Health Care Center, Hartwell, and was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church. Miss James was a 2007 graduate of Franklin County High School, where she was a member of the yearbook staff, the art society, and was a member of the varsity football and varsity basket ball cheerleading squads. Survivors, in addition to her parents, include: brother, Christopher O’Neal James Strickland, Athens; sister, Kristan James, Royston; grandparents, Billy and Brenda Atkinson, Royston, and Dollie Ivie James, Athens. Survivors in addition to his mother, include his former wife, Kelly Veal, Maysville; son, Elijah Paul Kubitzky, Maysville; sister, Barbie Hendrix, Hull; and a brother, Kevin Kubitzky, Athens. Memorial services will be held Saturday, February 28, at 5p.m., in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home.
