Tennis
Madison County girls split first two matches
The Madison County girls'
tennis season started with a win
and a rare loss.
The team beat Stephens
County (5-0) Feb. 24 and lost to
Hart County (3-2) Feb. 26.
Against Hart County, Madison
County’s top two singles play
ers - Molly Smith and Jeannie
Bowen - claimed victories, but
rest of the Lady Raider lineup
lost its matches. Audra Minish
ran into a seasoned player at no. 3
singles, while the doubles teams
of Sarah Powers and Kaitlyn
Hale and Alexia Supakorndej
and Bailey O'Rourke played
“very good tennis,” according to
coach Keith Strickland, but lost.
Against Stephens County,
Madison County expended little
energy, winning all of its matches
in straight sets and dropped just
13 games to the Lady Indians.
“We’ve had some injury situ
ations this season and are still
missing a key player involved
in basketball,” Strickland said.
“However, the girls were up to
the challenge and played well at
all positions.”
Strickland noted Audra
Minish’s performance at no. 3
singles.
“She was the only freshman
starting and played well under
the pressure of her first high
school match using a regular
scoring format,” he said.

STATE TOURNAMENT ROUND ONE: Madison Co. 74. Hillgrove 66
Courtney cruises
Lady Raider star scores
38 in state tourney win
By Ben Munro
ben@mainstreetnews.com
M adison County entered Friday’s
state tournament game with four
sick players, but Courtney Freeman
was immune to any vims going around - and any
defense Hillgrove could draw up.
Freeman scored 38 points to lead Madison
County (24-5) to a 74-66 victory over the visiting
Lady Hawks (17-10) in the opening round of the
Class AAAA postseason.
“Courtney was feeling great,” coach Dan Lampe
said.
The 38-point outburst from Freeman came on
the heels of a rare seven-point performance against
Clarke Central in the 8-AAAA region champion
ship game.
Freeman lost a contact lens in that game, obscur
ing her ability to see the ball, let alone score.
But her vision was impeccable Friday in
Madison County’s 13th-straight victory.
“She brought an extra pair of lenses,” Lampe
quipped.
Freeman had 20 points at the half, and Madison
County needed every bit of it as the Lady Raiders
clung to a 35-29 lead.
“I felt like the other team brought it to us early,”
said Lampe, whose Lady Raiders fell behind 10-2
in the opening minutes.
The Lady Raiders trailed for most of the first and
second quarters before going on an 11-0 run —
sparked by back-to-back baskets from Freeman —
to end the first half.
Madison County built on that lead in the second
half, leading by 15 points twice, though it never
quite put Hillgrove away.
The Lady Hawks cut the lead to 70-64 late
Courtney Freeman scored 38 points to
lead Madison County past Hillgrove.

throw line.
Kayla Freeman added 11 points and Sam
LaZear came off the bench to score 10 in another
savvy performance by the freshman.
