This week’s featured pet is “Pancho,” who is about 2 1/2 years old and was brought into the shelter after the snowstorm. “It’s obvious that Pancho just loves people,” said a shelter staff member. “This terrier mix begs for attention — and we do mean begs. Pancho will stand on his hind legs, jumping to get your attention and approval.” For more information, contact the Madison Oglethorpe Animal Shelter at 706-795-2868. The cost to adopt Pancho is $75, which covers his current shots and neutering. CHECK PRESENTATION Gary Locke, Jr. (right), Chairperson of Madison County DFCS Board recently presented a check to Madison County Commission Chairman Anthony Dove in the amount of $3,748.75 for unused funds from the 2008 supplemental budget. Chairman Dove expressed his “profound appreciation of the DFCS board’s prudent stewardship of the funds that the Madison County Board of Commissioners entrusted them with.” The chairman said he appreciates “the sensitivity to the current economic climate that DFCS board has demonstrated in their use of bud geted funds.” Members of the Madison County DFCS Board in addition to Chairperson Locke are: Anne G. Stone, Vice Chairperson; Mary Smith; John Hoyt Reed and Shelia Collins. Senior Center menu, activities for March 16 - 20 The Eloise McCurley Senior Center has announced its lunch menu and planned activities for Monday, March 16, through Friday, March 20. Monday - Swiss steak with gravy, creamy mashed potatoes, southern-style greens with turkey ham, wheat bread, applesauce and low fat milk. Fitness/puzzles/games. Tuesday - Sliced ham. green peas, creamy mashed potatoes, whole grain bread, St. Patrick’s swirl pudding and low-fat milk. Fitness/St. Patrick’s Day Social. Wednesday - Breaded pork patty with gravy, mixed vegetables, spinach, cornbread muffin, peaches and low fat milk. Fitness/movie/popcom. Thursday - Homestyle beef chili with beans, white rice, whole kernel corn, wheat roll, wheat crackers, orange and low fat milk. Fitness/puzzle s/cards/line dancing. Board of health reschedules meeting The Madison County Board of Health has rescheduled its meeting to Wednesday, March 18, at 2 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Madison County Health Department Conference Room at 1424 Hwy. 98 West in Danielsville. County notes Law Day essay contest announced The law office of Warren C. Caswell announces that it is once again sponsoring a Law Day Essay Contest for local students. All high school students in Madison, Franklin, Oglethorpe, Elbert, Hart, Jackson and Banks counties are eligible. Entries are due by April 15 and winners will be announced on Law Day, May 1. Full details are available on the Internet at wwyy.warrencaswelllaw.com This year’s topic was selected in honor of the bicentennial anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s birth and asks entrants: “Which of the 13 th , 14 th or 15* Amendments to the Constitution is the most important and why?” Further, entrants are asked to explain how their selected amendment affects their life and the lives of those around them every day. First prize is a $500 cash scholarship and second prize is a $200 U.S. Savings Bond. The Annual Law Day Essay Contest is designed to encourage young people to think about the role of law in society and how law affects their everyday lives, even at a young age, the release stated. Caswell has sponsored the contest each year since opening his practice in Madison County. Heating assistance available Ninth District Opportunity has funds available to assist Madison County residents with their heating bills, according to a press release. This assistance does not interfere with other assistance you may be receiving such as Medicare, etc., officials said. If you have not applied for heating assistance since Nov. 1, 2008, you are eligible if your yearly gross household income is at or below: $15,600 for one person; $21,000 for two people; $26,400 for three people $31,800 for four people and $37,200 for five people. Officials add that you will need to provide your Social Security cards and current monthly income for everyone in the household, as well as your most recent heating bill. Shelter walk-in rabies clinics upcoming The Madison-Oglethorpe Animal Shelter, 1888 Colbert- Danielsville Road, will hold walk-in rabies clinics on Saturday, March 28, and Saturday, April 18, from noon to 3 p.m. One-year rabies vaccines are $10 each and three-year rabies vaccines are $15 (must have proof of previous rabies vaccination for the three-year shot). Parvo/distemper vaccinations for dogs and puppies ($10 each) and feline leukemia vaccinations for cats and kittens ($10 each) and microchipping ($25) will also be offered during the clinics. Spay/neuter surgery appointments can be scheduled on the last Saturday in March and in April. In addition, grooming services are offered on the last Saturday of each month, with all proceeds going to the shelter, organizers said.
