Middle School Tennis
MCMS girls off to 4-1 start, boys’ team has won three matches
The Madison County Middle School girls’ ten
nis team is off to a 4-1 start on the court, while
the boys are 3-2.
The MCMS girls have won four in a row, while
the boys carry a two-game winning streak.
Both the boys and girls lost to non-region
Morgan County to start the season. However,
both squads quickly redeemed themselves of that
early setback by shutting out region foe Franklin
County.
The Lady Mustangs continued their winning
ways with victories over Jefferson, Stephens
County and Tallulah Falls.
Jefferson proved to be a stiffer challenge for
the boys, however, as they fell short in a tough
battle. But the Mustangs bounced back with easy
wins over Stephens County and Tallulah Falls.
The Lady Mustangs enjoy a mix of returning
players and new talent, according to MCMS ten
nis coach Chris Oglethree. Eighth grade captain
and undefeated player Kaylee Bates is setting the
tone for girls and is backed by "baseline boom
ers" Jenny Ortman and Abby Morgan, Ogletree
said. Captain Abby Thrasher is the top-ranked
seventh grader on the team, backed by returning
player and co-Captain, Olivia Minish.
When he’s not playing in tournaments all over
Georgia, Mustang captain Ben Strickland is
"proving to be a true leader and tough opponent
for this region," according to Ogletree. Two
strong seventh graders, Tyler Terrell and Zack
Peneguy, back Strickland.
"The 2009 Mustang Tennis Team has proven
to be one of the strongest teams yet,” Ogletree
said. "With the majority of its players in seventh
grade, the 2010 team will be just as strong."
