MARCH 19. 2009 Social News HAM AND EGG SUPPER HELD Madison County Senior Center Director Joe Dudley said the annual ham and egg supper March 6 at the Eloise McCurley Senior Center was “the most successful ever.” “Thanks to everyone who purchased tickets and thanks to those who helped prepare the meals,” said Dudley. “Areally big thanks to all of you who enjoyed the ham ‘n’ egg supper. We will do this again for you in the first week in March next year.” What’s happening? March Weight Watchers available at Comer Baptist Need some help losing a few pounds? Well, a Weight Watchers program is now available in Madison County. The weight-loss group will hold its first meeting at 6 p.m., Thursday, March 19, in the fellowship hall of the Comer Baptist Church at 2054 MainStreet, Comer. Instructor Karen Hedgelon will lead the class. Hedgelon joined Weight Watchers in 2002 and achieved her goal of losing 22 lbs. “Every single pound lost is important, whether it’s five or 100," said Hedgelon. Hedgelon says the meetings will include a weigh-in, instruction on how to count points, tips on weight loss and motivational information. She said she believes this is the first Weight Watchers program ever in Madison County. “We welcome everyone," she said. Shiloh VFD to hold cake walk The Shiloh Volunteer Fire Department will hold a cake walk and cake auction at 7 p.m., March 21. Doors open at 4 p.m. for cake drop olfs. Organizers say donations will be appreciated. Music will be provided by Sons of Shiloh. Local 4-H members to perform with Nashville songwriter Local 4-H members, India McElroy and Tyler Robertson, will be on stage with Grammy-winning Nashville songwriter, Hillary Lindsey when she performs Saturday, March 21, at Rock Eagle 4-H Center in a Clovers & Co. benefit concert. McElroy and Robertson are current members of the 4-H performing group Clovers and Company. The songstress, Lindsey, will share the stage with the Georgia 4-H performing arts troupe to which she belonged for four years. Founded in 1981 as a promotional tool for Georgia 4-H, Clovers & Co. has produced such national talents as Lindsey and Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland. Faithful to her 4-H roots, the small-town girl from Washington, contributed three songs to last year’s Clover Country album—a joint venture between National 4-H Council and EMI Music. Among the many popular hits written or co-written by Hillary Lindsey are “Jesus Take the Wheel," "So Small” and “Just a Dream"— each recorded by Carrie Underwood. Artists such as Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Jason Aldean, Hillary Duff, and Martina McBride have also cut Lindsey’s songs. Author and humorist Darrell Huckaby will emcee the event. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Talmadge Auditorium at Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton. Proceeds from the show will go to Clovers & Co. Seating is limited. FFA Alumni chicken barbecue and bake sale Madison County FFA Alumni will have a chicken barbecue and bake sale March 21 from 5-7 p.m. Plates are $6 and are take out only. Twenty visual artists will demonstrate and sell their traditional crafts. They include: Mark Davis, blacksmithing; Sharon Grist, spinning and weaving; Barney James, oak and bark baskets; Joan Lurwig, knitting and crocheting; Pat and Janice Shields, pottery; Jenny Stevens, herbal soapmaking; The Stevens Brothers, carving bowls, spoons; Michael Hill, heirloom plants and herbs; Melissa Tufts, quilting; Peter Loose, painting; Tina McCullough, pottery; Jerry King, wood lathe; Isabel King, woodcarv ing, walking sticks; Catherine Haley, herblore; Chip Chandler, log cabin building; Mills Farms, red mule com products; Beth Kelley Zorbanos, com shuck dollmaking; Lawson Moore, old fashion cookie baking contest. COOKIE CONTEST To enter the cookie contest, bring one dozen of your best home made cookies or bars to the festival by 2 p.m. The baking contest is free to enter and open to everyone. Prizes will be awarded to the top three recipes. Only homemade cookies and bars will be judged. Each entry will be scored on cookie uniformity, visual appeal, taste and overall quality. All entries must register by 2 p.m. on the day of the festival. Each entry must contain a dozen cook ies or bars of the same batch. However, contestants may submit more than one entry. After judging, all remaining cookies and bars will be sold to raise money for next year’s contest. The winners will be announced and prizes awarded during the festival. Mount Hermon Presbyterian Church will again sell a traditional meal of pinto beans, combread, drinks and homemade desserts. ‘These ‘good cookin' ladies then share their profits with local service organizations," said organizers. BARN DANCE An old-time bam dance, featuring the Georgia Mudcats with Susan Davis calling, will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. in the old Danielsville gym. "You don't have to bring a partner or know these dances to enjoy this style of community dance,” organizers said. ‘The caller will teach you everything you need to know. Fun for all ages and great exercise too.” The festival is funded in part by Madison County Habitat for Humanity, Water’s Edge Woods, Danielsville Hardware, Sam and Maria DeRaimo, Graham Law Firm, Broad River Watershed Association, Merchants and Farmers Bank, Zorbanos Realty and Investment and Flying Dog Productions.
