COLBERT ELEM. PURCHASES SMARTBOARDS
Colbert Elementary School recently purchased three new
interactive SmartBoards with support from Grant and Lise
Tyner. The SmartBoards are in the Title I technology lab,
Tammy Strickland’s fifth grade classroom, and the media cen
ter. Pictured in front of one of the SmartBoards are assistant
principal Kathy Perry, Grant Tyner, Lise Tyner and principal
Billy Heaton.
DOBBS NAMED FINE ARTS STUDENT
OF MONTH
Chastin Dobbs, daughter of Marcus and Patti Dobbs of
Danielsville, has been named MCHS Fine Arts Student of the
Month. Dobbs recently was honored by selection to the 2009
Georgia All-State Chorus through competitive state-wide
auditions by more than 10,000 middle school and high school
singers. The 1,550 selected students spent three days in
Savannah rehearsing and performing under guest conduc
tors. At Madison County High School, Dobbs is a member of
the Advanced Women’s Ensemble, the JV softball team, and
the varsity soccer team. Singing a duet with her sister Karlie,
she earned first place in the fall talent show at the school.
Dobbs is a sophomore who maintains a straight-A average.
She attends Jones Chapel United Methodist Church.
Madison County floriculture
teams compete at UGA
The Madison County FFA Floriculture Teams recently competed
in the Area II FFA Floriculture Career Development Event at the
University of Georgia Animal and Dairy Sciences Building in
Athens.
The senior team members included senior Karlee Jarrett, junior,
Hannah Free, and sophomores Colton Searcy and Brianna Roberts.
These students identified floriculture and bedding plant materials
and identified ways to treat unhealthy plants due to pests, nutritional,
mechanical or chemical injuries.
These students also worked through a very strenuous 25-question
multiple choice test and a five-question problem solving test, which
hones in on students math and world application abilities. There were
over 20 teams competing to go to the state CDE. Only the top two
teams get to advance on and the Madison County High School senior
team missed the chance by placing third.
The Madison County’s Freshman Academy FFA junior floriculture
team competed and placed tenth on the area level out of over 20 teams
as well. Sierra Collins was the team’s high individual and the 15th
high individual overall. Sierra Collins, Shannon Cavanagh, Kelsey
Carithers and Jade Andrews made up the Freshman Academy team
These teams will be recognized at the local FFA banquet April 28.
FFA is a national organization of over 451,000 members preparing
for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology
of agriculture. FFA is an integral part of the agricultural education
program in public schools. The FFA motto is Learning to Do, Doing
to Learn, Earning to live and Living to Serve. The Floriculture Career
Development Event is sponsored by the Georgia FFA Foundation.
The Floriculture CDE is held once a year to help promote agriculture
education and the agriculture industry.
Some of the Career Development Events (CDEs) still left to get
involved with this year with the Madison County FFA include dairy
judging team, horse judging team as well as, agriculture discussion
and FFA quiz, forestry, lawnmower operation. Other local and state
leadership activities for the rest of the year include local volleyball
game, football Game and local banquet. Area n awards banquet, state
FFA convention, FFA/FCCLA leadership camp and Washington lead
ership conference.

Mary Paige Powell and Halee Dove have fun jumping rope.
DES participates m Jump Rope for Heart
Danielsville Elementary School jumped all over heart disease and
stroke by participating in Jump Rope for Heart. The students raised
more $2,200 for the American Heart Association.
Donations traised during the Jump Rope For Heart help fund research
to fight heart disease and stroke and also support the American Heart
Association’s public and professional education programs. Heart dis
ease is the No. 1 killer in America and stroke is No. 3.
Jump Rope For Heart is a program that promotes physical fitness and
health through the fun activity of jumping rope. It is co-sponsored by
the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health,
Physical Education, Recreation and Dance,
