Colbert council hopes for water tank funds
By Ben Munro
ben@mainstreetnews.com
Colbert leaders still await
word on whether the city
is eligible for grant money
to build a new water tank
on the southern portion of
town.
“As I understand it from
the engineer, we’re still
waiting now to see which
money might be available
and how to go about it,’’
Mayor John Waggoner said.
“It’s not a done deal.”
The city will discuss the
matter further at its next
council meeting, April 6.
Colbert is consulting with
Piedmont Water.
Colbert leaders have pon
dered the possibility of
building a 200,000-gallon
tank south of Hwy. 72 and
the railroad tracks which
bisect the town.
If it undertakes the proj
ect, Colbert hopes to lure
funding from the Georgia
Environmental Facility
Authority (GEFA), a state
agency that provides finan
cial assistance and support
services.
But, as of right now, the
city doesn’t even know yet
if it can apply for the money
for a new tank.
Colbert might be eligible
for stimulus money for the
project, but Waggoner said
he’s heard nothing definite
regarding that either.
Colbert seeks to increase
its water flow on that side
of town for fire protection.
A lower “fire rating”
would mean lower insur
ance rates for those in the
Colbert Fire District.
Waggoner did note that
the water storage from the
county could aid in decreas
ing Colbert’s ISO rating.
Whether or not Colbert
can build a new water tank,
running a new eight-inch
line under Hwy. 72 and the
railroad is the most press
ing water matter facing the
city, Waggoner said.
“If we don’t get the
money for the water tank,
we’re still going to need
that and we’ll probably go
ahead with it one way the
another,” Waggoner said.
City of Colbert gears up for runoff
By Ben Munro
ben@mainstreetnews.com
Colbert voters will decide between city
council candidates Evelyn Patton Power
and Ellyn Trinrud in a municipal runoff
April 14 — or earlier if they please.
Early and advanced voting will run from
March 23 to April 9 at city hall, Mondays
through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
on election day.
Patton Power garnered 25 votes a March
17 special election to fill the empty seat of
former councilman Jeff Roberts, followed
closely by Trinrud, who had 20.
A third candidate, Dennis Moon, fin
ished with 13.
With no candidate earning a majority
of the vote, it forced the runoff between
Patton Power and Trinrud.
Long-time Colbert mayor John
Waggoner said this is the first runoff for a
council post in his 40 years in office.
With two women vying for the open
seat, it also ensures Colbert of its first
female councilperson.
Turnout for runoffs is generally less than
that of conventional elections, but female
candidates might bring something new to
the table.
“Sometimes ladies will pursue some
thing maybe a little more than the men
folks do,” Waggoner quipped.
Only those who registered by Feb. 28
can vote in the runoff.
Registered voters who didn't vote in the
original election can still participate in the
runoff.
