Born in DeKalb County on August 7, 1932, he was the son of the late Onnie Elmer and Ruth Rollins Pulliam. He was a retired truck driver and member of the Liberty Baptist Church in Carnesville. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Navy dur ing the Korean Conflict. Mr. Pulliam was preceded in death by a son, Kim Rodney Pulliam. Survivors include his wife, Geneva Owens Pulliam, Royston; son and daughter-in- law, Ken R. and Cheryl Pulliam Loganville; daughter-in-law, Cynthia Pulliam, Carnesville; grandchildren, Angel Womack, Cory Pulliam, Joey Pulliam, Tiffany Pulliam and Thomas Pulliam; seven great-grandchil dren; and a sister, Gwendolyn Tiencken, Loganville. John Purcell 15, 1934, in he was the CORNELIA - John Purcell, 74, died Thursday, April 9, 2009. Born on July Stephens County, son of the late C.C. and Addie Cash Purcell. He was a retired employee with Habersham Hardware and Home Center with over 30 years of service, was a member of Camp Creek Baptist Church, and was a United States Army veteran. Mr. Purcell was preced ed in death by brothers, Curtis, Charles and Billy B. Purcell. Survivors include his wife, Marie Hunter Purcell, Cornelia; daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy Brich, Mt. Airy, Gail and Wayne Murphy, Alto, and Pat and Randy Mizer, Commerce; sister and brother- in-law, Latrelle and R.J. Norton, Alto; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Reynolds, 79, died April 10, 2009. A Barrow County native, he was the son of the late Virgil and Lottie Skinner Reynolds. He was a retired automotive mechanic and was a United States Air Force Veteran. Mr. Reynolds was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Page Reynolds. Eula Mae Roaden GREENVILLE S.C. - Eula Mae Roaden, 87, died Saturday, April 11, 2009. Born in Williamsburg, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Minnie Smith Nicholson. She was a gradu ate of Cumberland College in Kentucky and the University of Georgia, with a master’s degree from Furman University. She taught at Grove and Northwood Elementary Schools and was a reading specialist at Travelers Rest and Gateway Elementary Schools. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, International Honorary Sorority for Women Educators, and was a member of Hampton Heights Baptist Church. Mrs. Roaden was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Chandler; granddaughter, Stacie Chandler; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Kermit and Patsy Nicholson, and Carl and Ruth Nicholson. Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Jesse Roaden; sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Judy Roaden, Dallas, Texas, Glenn and Kay Roaden, Easley, S.C., David and Sandra Roaden, Simpsonville, and Roy and Diane Roaden, Aiken, S.C.; son-in-law. Salter, 74, died Monday, April 13, 2009, at her residence. Born in Irwin County, she was the daughter of the late Ivy and Edna Watson Tucker. Born on February 12, 1918, he was the son of the late James Sanders and Etta Hicks Saxon and was preced ed in death by his wife of 60 years, Clara Mae Davidson Saxon; brother, Price Saxon; and sisters, Blanche Lewallen, Lillie Belle Thomas, Lona Smith, Carie Jackson and Mae Smith. He had lived in Lula most of his life and was the Founding Father of the Lula Congregational Holiness Church. He served there for over 45 years as deacon, trust ee, Sunday School Teacher, and song director. He taught singing schools all over North Georgia, slated song director for camp meetings in Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina. He and his family arranged a singing group known as The Singing Saxon Family, which traveled all over Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Alabama, Tennessee and Florida. His whole family was known to sing far and wide over Georgia and ride on wagons to every singing in the community. He was one of those who got to sing around the old pump organ at night with the old pine torch and oil lamps and sing with his family until midnight. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Morgan and Dianne Saxon; daughters and sons-in-law, Edna and Swayne Jordan and Hilda and Joe Pavan; grandchildren, Carroll and Lori Saxon, Steven Marchbanks, Renee and Matt Bejaran, Susan and Greg Caudell and Jackie Saxon; nine great-grandchil dren; sisters, Gertrude Armour and Dollie Duncan; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Born in Elbert County on March 24, 1931, he was the son of the late Edward Clay and Addie Lucille Dickerson Seymour. He was a retired pulp- wood worker in the logging industry and was a member of Montgomery Baptist Church in Gillsville. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Army. Mr. Seymour was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Sue Hall Seymour; and brothers, Thomas and James Seymour. Survivors include a son, James Keith Dickerson, Gillsville; daughter, Karen McDowell, Bowman; sisters, Betty Harris and Marcie Maxwell, both of Bowman; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Ruth Shiflet HARTWELL - Ruth Adams Shiflet, 89, died Thursday, April 9, 2009, at her residence. Born on November 9, 1919, in Metter, she was the daughter of the late Homer and Ethel Kirkland Jones. She was adopt ed and raised by Hafford and Georgia Adams. She was retired from Hartwell Mills and was a member of Sardis Baptist Church. Mrs. Shiflet was pre ceded in death by her husband, Lanier Shiflet; and a brother, Lonnie Adams. Survivors include a son, Billy Shiflet, Hartwell; daugh ter, Mary Howard, Tiger; sis ter, Eula Gholston, Comer; five grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Mrs. Sims was preceded in death by a daughter, Jenny Ruth Sims; and brother, John D. Worley Sr. She was an avid dog lover, loved ones stated. Born in Hall County on July 24, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Jack and Pauline Pittman Armour. She was a retired seamstress and member of the Living Mission United Methodist Church. She enjoyed sewing and gardening, loved ones stated. Mrs. Stancil was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Oliver. Survivors include her hus band, Michael E. April 16, 2009. Carlton Stephens GAINESVILLE - Carlton Wilburn Stephens, 75, died Sunday, April 12, 2009, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, following an extended illness. Born on January 31, 1934, in Hall County, he was the son of the late Rufus Leon and Lizzie Martin Stephens. He served with the local National Guard, served in the Army in Italy with the Engineering Battalion, then began his law enforcement career under Cal Wilson while working for the Gainesville City Fire Department. He retired from Hall County Sheriff's Department with approxi mately 20 years of service. Mr. Stephens was preceded in death by a brother, Cecil Stephens. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Betty Forrester Stephens, Gainesville; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Gary Stewart, Lula; son and daugh- ter-in-law, Richard Carlton and Carol Stephens, Charlotte, N.C.; granddaughters and husbands, Deena and Johnny Boyette and Heather and Brian Miller, all of Covington; granddaugh ter, Sarah Catherine Stephens, Charlotte, N.C.; grandsons, Nathaniel Shane Stewart and fiance. He served as scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 156 and was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Winder and the Brotherhood Class. Born in Habersham County on May 9, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Purvie Benton and Milda Myrtle Dale Parson. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist denomination. Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Thompson; and a brother, Harold Parson. April 16, 2009. ‘Tommy’ Tolbert SNELLVILLE - Claude Thomas Tolbert, 79, died Friday, April 10, 2009, at Parkwood Nursing and Rehab Center in Snellville, following complica tions of Alzheimer’s disease. Born on June 10, 1929, he grew up in Maysville, Banks County. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1946, and held many decorations, to include the Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star, four Army Commendation Medals, World War II Victory Medal and Combat Infantry Badge. He retired from the Army as Lieutenant Colonel. He was employed with the Atlanta Public Schools R.O.T.C. program, served as a State Representative from 1975 though 1992 in Georgia, and authored around 19 laws. Survivors include his wife, Bessie Tolbert, Snellville; chil dren, Tommy Tolbert Jr. and Kassandra Tolbert, Cindy and Gary Hetherington, Terri and Steve Bland, all of Snellville, Barbara Hawkins, Loganville, Ted Tolbert, Gainesville; stepsons, Larry Carter, Lake Martin, Ala., Johnny Carter, Suwanee, and Tommy Cook, Lawrenceville; grandchildren, Bryan and Tara Tolbert, Brooke Hetherington, Justin Tolbert, Summer and Savannah Bland, all of Snellville, Shaun and Ashley Hawkins, Loganville; and a sister, Beth Tolbert, Atlanta. She was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church in Commerce. Frank Wilson QUITMAN - Frank Willard Wilson, 89, died Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at the Brooks County Hospital, following a brief ill ness. Born in Franklin County on October 18, 1919, he was the son of the late Sam and Flora Mitchell Wilson and grew up in Madison County. He was a driver for the Dodge Dealership and was a veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II. He was of the Baptist denomina tion. He enjoyed the Saturday Morning Brooks County Men’s Bible Group, watching baseball on television, and watching his friend’s young sons play base ball. Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Peek Wilson; and brothers, Mack Wilson, Danielsville, Jack Wilson, Decatur, and Ray Wilson, Ohio; and a sister, Dot Whitehead, Colbert.
