APRIL 16. 2009 — PAGE 15A School News 2009 MISS MCHS PAGEANT SET FOR SATURDAY The Madison County High FBLA will present the 2009 Miss MCHS Pageant Saturday, April 18, at 7 p.m. in the MCHS Gym. Admission will be $5 at the door. “Twelve lovely contestants will compete for the crown and title of Miss MCHS 2009,” organizers said. Each contestant will be judged individually on their school and community involvement, pageant responsi bilities and teacher recommendations, talent presentation and evening gown. The top five finalists will then be asked to answer a final question to help determine the winner of this year’s pageant. All members of the community are invited to come out and support this long standing tradition at Madison County High School. School notes Local students named to honors society A Hull student was recently inducted in the Gainesville State College’s Rho Mu Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. Jonathan King was among 55 new members inducted into the prestigious honors society recognizing excellence at two- year colleges. Membership is based primarily upon academic achievement. Members must have completed at least 25 hours of course work toward an associate degree program, have a grade point average of 3.6. and enjoy full rights of citizenship. MCHS class of ‘99 hosting reunion Aug. 8 The MCHS Class of ’99 will hold its 10-year reunion, Saturday, Aug. 8, at 6 p.m at Camp Kiwanis in Danielsville. Tickets are $35 per person. Class of ‘94 to hold reunion The Madison County High School Class of 1994 will have its 15-year class reunion May 16. Immunizations offered The Madison County Health Department reminds parents to make sure their children receive all required immunizations for the 2009/10 school year. Effective July 1, 2007, two new vaccines were required: Pneumococcal Conjugate (PCV) for daycare, Head start and preschool only and hepatitis A, for all children bom after Jan. 1, 2006, officials noted. Additional doses have also been added to two existing vaccine requirements for all children entering kindergarten, sixth grade or new entrants (children of any age entering Georgia schools for the first time or returning to Georgia schools after being out of the system for a year). These are: MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) - second dose required or measles vaccine (two doses), mumps vaccine (two doses) and rubella vaccine (one dose) or serologic proof of immunity and varicella (chickenpox) - second dose required or healthcare provider documentation of disease history or serologic proof of immunity. The following is a complete list of immunizations that are required for school enrollment, according to the health department: DTAP (diptheria, tetanus and pertussis)- four to five doses; hepatitis B - three doses; polio - three to four doses; MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) - two doses; varicella (chickenpox) - two doses; Hib (Haemophilus Influnzae Type b) - three to four doses, for daycare and preschool only; Pneumococcal Conjugate (PCV), for daycare. Head Start and preschool only and hepatitis A, for all children bom on or after Jan. 1,2006. Children can receive up to five vaccines per visit and dosage requirements vary by age, according to officials. The health department also offers hearing, vision and dental screenings (Form 3300) required by schools, as well as Immunizations and Certificate 3231. Before coming to the health department, please obtain immunization records from your child’s pediatrician, and if not in English, please have them translated, officials said. Data entry fees will apply if the information has not been entered into the Georgia Registry of Immunization Transactions and Services. Payment methods accepted include Medicaid, Peachcare, cash, or check, officials said. Insurance will not be filed by the health department, officials added. Hull Trike-A-Thon fund-raiser to benefit St. Jude A “Trike-A-Thon” will be held Saturday, April 18, from 10-11:30 a.m. at Hull-Sanford Elementary School. Any parent with a child/ children wishing to participate in the event may call coordinator Deborah Garrett at 706-789-3116 or co-coordinator Angie Bridges at 706-783-2161 to register. Registration is free and bring your own trike or other riding toy. A free coloring book and stickers will be provided at registration. Also, other free items will be provided for each child’s sponsor donation of $35 or more. All checks or money orders should be made out to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is the first institution established for the sole purpose of conducting basic clinical research into catastrophic childhood diseases, mainly cancer, and is the largest childhood cancer research center in the world in terms of number of patients enrolled on research study protocols and successfully treated. St. Jude research in acute lym phoblastic leukemia, Hodges dis ease, neuroblastoma and other illnesses have already resulted in new treatment procedures which are now standard. ALSAC, the fund-raising arm, covers all costs not covered by insurance for medical treatment rendered at St. Jude. Families without insurance are never asked to pay. Student Code of Conduct meeting set for April 21 The Madison County school system will have a Student Code of Conduct meeting for parental input on Tuesday, April 21, at 3:30 p.m. in the Professional Learning Center in the board of education office (previously the media center of the old middle school). A committee of two parents, two teachers and one administrator will represent every school. The middle and high schools will also have student representatives. Concerned parents are encouraged to attend this public meeting, officials said. If parents cannot attend, they can provide committee members with feedback on the Student Code of Conduct. Kindergarten students invited for school visit Children who will attend kindergarten in Madison County schools next year are invited to bring their parents to visit the school they will be attending for an informational and fun visit conducted by Carol Barnes, Parent Involvement Coordinator. Children and parents will have the opportunity to visit all kindergarten classrooms, the computer lab, media center, lunchroom, gym and other points of interest, according to the press release. Tours will conducted according to following schedule: Monday, April 27, Danielsville Elementary; Tuesday, April 28, Ila Elementary; Wednesday, April 29, Hull-Sanford Elementary; Thursday, April 30, Comer Elementary and Friday, May 1, Colbert Elementary. MCHS students selling plants The Madison County High School Horticulture class is holding its annual bedding plant sale at the school greenhouse Monday, April 13, through Friday, April 17, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. each day. "We have several varieties to choose from in order to get your yard looking great and offer both annuals and perennials," organizers said. Flats of 36 are $8 each. Hanging baskets are $7, Four-inch pots are $2 each and bags of potting soil are $12 (supplies are limited for the soil). The greenhouse is located behind the school off of Colbert-Danielsville Road.
