An Athens man was arrest
ed on traffic, drug and other

a traffic stop and chase in
Carlton.
Omar Schariff Mattox,
31, of 340 Sartain Drive,
was charged with fleeing
or attempting to elude a
police officer, reckless driv
ing, possession, manufac
ture, distribution, etc. viola

penalties.
According to the inci
dent report, while on patrol,
Deputy Michael Moore made
contact with Mattox’s 2006
Dodge Magnum while it was
sitting at the end of West
Street, blocking an intersec
tion with its headlights off.
As he approached the car, the
lights came on and the vehi
cle turned on to West Street.
Deputy Moore stopped the
vehicle and identified the
driver as Omar Mattox.
Mattox said he did not have
his driver’s license with him
and the deputy noted a strong
odor of marijuana.
When he mentioned this to
Mattox, he reportedly began
to shake and became extreme
ly nervous. At that point,
Moore stepped away from
the car and called for backup.
When backup arrived, Mattox
sped off with the deputies
in pursuit. Mattox reportedly
led the deputies down West
Street, taking up both lanes
of the curvy road and slid
ing sideways through curves
before stopping at a residence
and fleeing on foot. Mattox
reportedly threw a baggie
near a building as he was pur
sued by the deputies. After an
attempt to taser him, Mattox
allegedly dove to the ground
and said he was giving up.
The K-9 officer was called
to assist in locating the bag.
Deputies reportedly found a
2.5 gallon bag with suspected
marijuana, a baggie with a
off white rock-like substance,
another baggie with an off
white granular substance,

Buttocks grabbed
at Quick Pick
Sexual battery was reported at the Quick Pick in Colbert
last week after a female employee told law enforcement that a
male customer grabbed her buttocks in the store.
According to the incident report, the victim told Deputy Jeff
Strickland that while she was talking to another employee
at the counter of the store, a white male she knows only
as “Jessie” grabbed her buttocks. She then showed Deputy
Strickland a video of the incident. The video reportedly
showed that “Jessie” began staring at the victim’s buttocks
then leaned over and grabbed them and began laughing. The
victim said she would contact her employer about getting a
copy of the video.
In another incident, a Hull woman was arrested last week
after deputies were summoned to her home on Ivywood Drive
in reference a domestic dispute.
Rhonda Bates Wooten, 41,186 Ivywood Drive, was charged
with one count of battery under the Family Violence Act.
According to the incident report, Deputy Michael Moore
arrived at the scene, where Wooten told him that she and her
mother had been arguing and then got into a fight. Deputy
Moore then met with Wooten’s mother, the complainant, who
stated that when she came home she found that Wooten had
been drinking and had “made a mess on the kitchen table
with egg dye.” When she asked her daughter to clean up,
Wooten allegedly refused. The two began to argue during
which Wooten reportedly called her mother a “b@$%&”
and they began to fight. The mother had marks on her left
arm and Wooten had marks on her bottom lip, according to
the report. Deputy Moore determined that Wooten was the
primary aggressor and arrested her. She was transported to the
Madison County jail.

Crime and court policy
It is the policy of this news
paper to print the names of all
persons arrested and booked
through the Madison County
Jail. No exceptions are made
to that policy.
This newspaper also rou
tinely publishes the names
of those involved in criminal
court cases as those actions
make their way through the
judicial system, including the
final disposition of the case
when it is known.
We caution our readers,
however, that an arrest is not
a conviction and an individual
is presumed innocent under
the law until convicted of a
crime for which he has been
charged.
In addition to arrest reports,
we also routinely publish
items from incident reports
filed with local law enforce
ment agencies. Most of the
time, the names of those
involved are not published
unless one party has been offi
cially charged with a crime.

HE LIVES...The dust of the
centuries blows over the
graves of the founders of the
humanistic religions of the
world. But, Hallelujah! Our
Saviour, Jesus Christ, lives; He
is victorious over death. The
empty tomb and the
testimony of many witnesses
proves it. You ask me how I
know that He lives: He lives
within my heart. He has gone
to prepare a place for those
who trust Him, love Him, and
look for His return.
