THE MADISON COUNTY (GA1 JOURNAL. THURSDAY. APRIL 16. 2009 — PAGE 7A Madison Co. animal control provides 2008, 2009 stats Madison County Animal Control and Code Enforcement Director Jack Huff recently appeared before the county commissioners to ask the board to consider scal ing back the animal control services, noting that the calls are hindering the two from taking care of code enforce ment duties. Commissioners agreed to form a committee to study the animal control ordinance. Here is a breakdown of county animal control calls provided by Huff: 2008 (June-December) •Stray dog and cat calls (unknown owners): 244. •Dog and cat intake by ani mal control: 110. •Dog off property calls (dogs with known owners): 97. •Number of calls answered in which dogs are not seen by officer: 70. •Number of complaint calls returned and stray dogs are gone: 15. 2009 (Jan.-March) •Stray dog and cat calls (unknown owners): 112. •Dog and cat intake by ani mal control: 41. •Dog off property calls (dogs with known owners): 62. •Number of calls answered in which dogs are not seen by officer: 43. •Number of complaint calls returned and stray dogs are gone: 11. Ila may seek grant for well The town of Da will likely seek a grant to help it drill a backup well for the water system. The city councD heard a proposal from engineer Chris Quigley last week to prepare an engineering report that will pro vide a detailed outline of the city’s needs. Quigley said he could pro duce the report for $5,000 and that his specialty is grant writing. Quigley also requested that he be named the city’s engineer, but said that the title will not cost the city any money. The council took no action on the matter, but asked city attorney Pat Graham to review proposed contracts Quigly brought with him and contact the Madison County Industrial Development and Budding Authority about work that Quigley is currently doing for them. Graham is to report his findings to Mayor Mike Code. If no problems are found or questions arise, Code was instructed to hire Quigley. In a related matter, the councd continues to review a proposed stormwater ordinance and wdl have Quigley review it, if he is hired. City clerk Susan Steed agreed to find out if Waste Pro garbage codection keeps recycling records aftercouncilmanNathanielHobbs asked if residents are recycling. Margie Richards/Staff Industrial authority to meet Monday The Madison County Industrial Development and Building Authority will meet at 6 p.m. Monday in the his toric county courthouse in Danielsville. Agenda items include: •Financial report. •Water request •Utility director report: billing report, 2008 water system expansion update, Hwy. 98 water tank update. •Other IDA-related issues: Hull/Sanford sewer proj ect - accept bid - approve notice to proceed: engineer ing plans for Fund Programs American Recovery and Reinvestment Act; contract engineer. Madison County gets food, shelter funds Madison County has been awarded $9,236 in feder al stimulus funds through the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP). Federal funds totaling $100 million were made available to the EFSP, through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), to bring immediate relief to communities to address unemployment, poverty and other needs in light of the economic climate. Georgia received a total of $3.2 mil lion in such funds. The EFSP grant funds will be used to supplement food. shelter, rent, mortgage and utility assistance programs for people with non-disaster related emergencies. The grants were announced by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
