April Ila VFD chicken BBQ set for April 18 The Ila Volunteer Fire Department will hold a chicken BBQ on Saturday, April 18. Plates will be available for pick up at the fire hall from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets cost $7 each and are available from any department member. Royal Food Store and Ila Restaurant. Master Gardeners to hold plant sale April 18 The Madison County Master Gardeners Association (MCMGA) will hold its spring plant sale from 9 am to noon Saturday at the Madison County Extension Office on Sunset Drive in Danielsville. “There will be assorted perennials, annuals, vegetable plants, including heirloom tomatoes and houseplants all available at reasonable prices,” organizers said. "In addition to plants, MCMGA is also selling tickets for a beautiful wooden arbor, built and donated by craftsman Ron Leuthner.” Tickets are $5 each or three for Si2. The drawing will be held at 11:30 the day of the plant sale. Contact the Extension Office (706-795-2281) or a Master Gardener for tickets.Coffee and baked goods will also be sold. ‘Get the Dirt Out’ workshop set for April 18 The Broad River Watershed Association (BRWA) will offer a free “Get the Dirt Out” workshop on Saturday, April 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Madison County Library, on Highway 98 East of Danielsville. The programis part of a statewide education and enforcement campaign to help reduce pollution carried by stormwater runoff from construction sites, according to a press release. Participants learn how to help prevent stormwater runoff and sedimentation from polluting streams and rivers under the Clean Water Act. The workshop provides materials for citizens to learn about why dirt is a problem for streams, laws that regulate construction activities to prevent dirt from getting into streams, and enforcement of the permits issued for land disturbing activity. This program is free and open to the public, and is being sponsored by the Madison County Industrial Development and Building Authority as part of its community outreach program. “The largest single source of water pollution in Georgia is erosion and sediment runoff from construction and grading sites,” according to the press release. “Most of it is supposed to be kept on site." The Get the Dirt Out Program is designed to train citizens in how to spot stormwater runoff problems on construction sites, how to report the problem to the developer or the enforcement agency, and how to follow up to make sure problems get fixed. This program will last two hours and is free and open to the public. Each registered participant will receive a Get The Dirt Out manual, organizers said. Walk-ins are welcome, but pre registration is preferred. Please call 706-795-3473 to register. Heritage Foundation to visit Mason Mill The Madison County Heritage Foundation will have a Spring Ramble on Sunday, April 19, at 2:30 p.m. The group will visit Mason Mill. Gordon reunion set for April 19 The Gordon Family Reunion will be held on Sunday, April 19, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Comer Lions Club in Comer. Carlton Function Junction ahead April 25 The annual Carlton Junction Function is set for Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the big field on Hwy. 72 near the Carlton Post Office. There will be crafts and food vendors, musicians, kid-friendly activities, and “more barbecue booths than any other town fair can boast,” organizers said. May Colbert Canna Pageant ahead May 9 Spring is in the air and that means it is time for the annual Colbert Canna Pageant, organizers said. This year’s pageant is scheduled for Saturday, May 9, at the Colbert Auditorium. Entry forms may be picked up at the Colbert Bread Basket or Colbert City Hall. To be eligible, contestants must be ages 4-6, grades 4-6 or grades 9-12. They must live on a Colbert or Hull school bus route or mail route. Hull Spring Festival planned for May 23 The 11th Annual Hull Community Spring Festival will be held Saturday, May 23, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the festival grounds on Old Elberton Road in Hull. The parade begins at “9:30 a.m. sharp,” organizers said. The festival will feature entertainment by Frankie and Tina Cleveland; an antique and classic car show; and vendors featuring food, games, novelties, children's activities and “much, much more,” organizers said. June Singing for Shelter Pets festival set for June 6 The Singing for Shelter Pets Festival will be held Saturday, June 6, at the Madison County Memorial Park in Danielsville from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Organizers say there will be lots of entertainment including gospel, country and bluegrass music, along with numerous raffle prizes. Food and drinks will be also be available on site. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. All proceeds go to benefit the Madison Oglethorpe Animal Shelter. Scheduled performances include: Gospel music - Clark Kesler (who will also serve as master of ceremonies), the Songsters and the Gipsons (bluegrass gospel). Country music - Ramblin’ Country and Steve Dyer and Friends. Country/western music - The Sons of Shiloh, including Bartow Henry (vocals). Bill Adams, Norris Allen, Buster Chadwick, Barney Miller (steel), Ken Smith (guitar), Wayne Smith (bass), Wayne Stowers (drums) and Johnny Thomas (lead guitar). Kappeler completes basic training Air Force Airman Jessica L. Kappeler recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. She is the daughter of Donna Davis of Davids Home Church Road, Comer, and Gary Kappeler, Danielsville.
