The Madison County Recreation Department is offering a summer soccer camp June 15-19 from 9 a.m. to noon at the recreation department for children ages 7-12. Camp participants need to wear cleats, shin guards and shorts. Campers may bring their own soccer ball but are not required. David Harrison of Ila instructs the camp. He is a teacher at the Madison County High School where he also coached soccer for four years. Harrison was a 4-year letter- man at MCHS and has also played in adult leagues. Campers learn fundamentals such as dribbling, passing, shooting and trap ping the ball through “fun and challenging” games, according to organizers. Players at any level from beginner to advanced are welcome. Camp activities include skills competitions, scrimmages and wild water day. Pre-registration and pre-payment are required. MCHS baseball alumni game ahead June 27 A June 27 “old-timers” alumni game is open to all former Madison County High School baseball players who played their senior year. Organizers hope to generate enough inter est for two games, one starting at 4 p.m. and another at 7 p.m. A homerun derby and radar gun contest are scheduled between games. The cost for players to participate is $50, which covers the cost of food and a com memorative T-shirt. Fan admission is free. All proceeds go toward baseball facility improvements. Former players wanting to participate may send a check and their T-shirt size to MCHS baseball coach Charlie Griffeth at 1050 Hunt Rd. Danielsville, GA 30633. Rec dept, offers July tennis camp The Madison County Recreation Department is offering tennis camp for 6-to- 12-year-olds July 6-10 from 9 a.m. to noon at the recreation department. The camp is open to players of all skill levels. The fee is $45, which includes a camp T-shirt. Participants must bring a ten nis racquet. Christina Fortson, Danielsville, instructs the camp. She has played USTA league ten nis for seven years on many county teams. Campers learn fundamentals — such as serving, ground strokes, volleying and returns — through “fun and challenging” games, according to organizers. Pre-registration and pre-payment are required. MCYA cheerleading camp set for June 13 Madison County Youth Association (MCYA) cheerleading camp is June 13 at Hull-Sanford Elementary School from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for ages 4-14. Cruisers schedule continues The Madison County Cmisers — a local automobile organization — continues its schedules with shows on June 20, July 18, Aug. 15, Sept. 19 and Oct. 17. The October date is a special cruise-in, organizers note. Shows are at Danielsville City Park, running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. "All makes and models are welcome — rat rods, finished and unfinished,” organiz ers said. “As long as it has wheels and an engine, it’s invited. Coed softball league offered The Madison County Recreation Department will again offer an open coed softball league, with enough slots for eight teams. Games will be played at Haggard Park on Hwy. 98W on Monday and Thursday nights beginning July 13. The fee is $425 per team, with out-of- county teams charged an additional $75 fee per team. The deadline for all entries is June 26 at noon. The first eight teams to turn in entry fees and rosters are guar anteed a spot. COMPTON ENTERTAINS COLBERT STUDENTS Colbert Elementary fifth graders had an extra surprise at the end of the year cookout. Local celebrity Bobby Compton, lead singer for the Bobby Compton Band, came and entertained the students. “It was a great treat for the students, who listen to his CD everyday at lunch, to hear him in person,” fifth grade teachers said. COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SURVEY Madison County, Georgia Citizens Organized For Pipeline Safety (C.O.P.S.) And the Georgia Division of Public Health ATLANTA (GA) - The Georgia Division of Public Health, Chemical Hazards Program, is encouraging residents living in Madison County to complete a community environmental health survey. The purpose of the survey is to collect community health concerns about underground liquid and gas petroleum pipelines in Madison County. Members of a community advocacy group, Citizens Organized for Pipeline Safety, or C.O.P.S., have expressed concern about the potential for health risks from exposure to contaminants associated with these pipelines and associated distribution facilities in Madison County. C.O.P.S. members are working with CHP staff to develop, distribute, and collect the community environmental health surveys. Information collected from the completed surveys will be used to develop appropriate public health programs for the community. For more information about C.O.P.S. and to get copies of the survey and assistance with completing and returning it, and if you have questions, please contact Cat Drose at (706) 783- 4702. The survey consists of a 5-page questionnaire that asks about health and environmental concerns, health history, and basic demographic information (age, race, etc. for statistical purposes only). Participation is voluntary and is offered at no cost to residents. Results of this survey are expected to be available to residents in summer 2009. Reports created from the survey results will not contain any personal identifies such as name or address. These reports will contain grouped information only. Residents can obtain a survey online at www.health.state.ga.us, or by calling Pamela Noah at 404-657-6534. Surveys are also at the Madison County Health Department. Completed surveys can be returned to a secure drop box at the Madison County Health Department, 1424 Hwy. 98 West in Danielsville, or they can be mailed or faxed as instructed on the survey.
