Howard Jr„ 31, died Thursday,
May 21, 2009.
Born December 16, 1977,
he was the son of Joycelyn
Howard and the late Gregory
Howard Sr. He attended
Commerce High School and
was a member of Mt. Calvary
Missionary Baptist Church. He
was a joy to all that knew him
and loved him, brought a smile
to the heart of many by simply
flashing that “golden smile,”
was always ready and willing
to do whatever he could to
help anyone, and was known
as the life of the party, loved
ones stated. Mr. Howard was
preceded in death by grandpar
ents, John (Bookie) and Aileen
Rollins, Joe Rich and Ruth
Howard.
Survivors in addition to
his mother, include a sister,
Maranda Howard, Tallahassee,
Fla.; brother, Derek Howard,

Born in Barrow County on
April 1, 1922, she was the
daughter of the late Betty
Jackson. She was a member of
Barbers Creek Baptist Church.

and Mamie Jackson, Statham;

grandchildren; and brother and

DEMOREST - George
William “G.W.” Marcus, 80,
died Tuesday, May 26, 2009,
at Northeast Georgia Medical
Center, following an extended
illness.
Born in Oconee County,
S.C., on December 3, 1928,
he was the son of the late
George T. and Drucilla Heaton
Marcus. He was retired from
WebCo as a welder with 38
years of service and was a
member of the Maysville
United Methodist Church. Mr.
Marcus was preceded in death
by a sister, Maebelle Marcus;
and brothers, Junior Marcus,
Houston Marcus and Tommy
Marcus. In his spare time, he
enjoyed deer hunting, fishing
with his grandchildren, wood
working, and gardening, loved
ones stated.
Survivors include his
wife of 57 years, Geraldine
Simmons Marcus, Demorest;
daughters and sons-in-law,
Patsy K. Buchwald, Colorado
Springs, Colo., Linda S. and

Church. She was a homemak
er.

Robert Odom
WINDER - Robert Harden
Odom, 82, died Thursday, May
21, 2009.
Born in Chatham County,
N. C., he was
the son of the
late Chafin
A. and Irene
Harden Odom.
A member of the St. Anthony’s
Episcopal Church, he became
a member of Winder Lions
Club on October 1, 1959, and
had perfect attendance for 45
years. He served as past presi
dent and held various other
offices. Mr. Odom was a long
time cook for the bi-monthly
meetings, where his signature
dishes were fried chicken and
strawberry shortcake. He was
a World War II Navy Veteran
and a teacher for 30 plus
years. A graduate of Bradwell
Institute in Hinesville, Teacher
College’s of Statesboro, and
received his masters from
the University of Georgia.
He was past president of Jug
Tavern Senior Citizens Golf
Association. Mr. Odom was
preceded in death by a brother,
Albert Odom; and sister, Mae
O. Whittle,
Survivors include his
wife, Maggie Odom; daugh
ter, Barbara Odom; daughter
and son-in-law, Becky and
Kenneth Rogers; grandchil
dren, Rusty and Casey Rogers,
all of Winder; brother, Alton C.

Peterson, 89, died Sunday,

Pensacola, Fla.,
on March 5,
1920, he was the
son of the late Lars Adolph and
Helny Petterson Pettersson. He
was a member of the Wayside
Baptist Church in Miami,
Fla., was a jet engine overhaul
supervisor, having retired from
Eastern Airlines, and was a
United States Navy Veteran,
having served as a chief petty
officer during World War II.
Survivors include his wife,
Marie Anderson Peterson,
Royston; son, Neil Peterson,
Miami, Fla.; daughters, Reah
Peterson Black, Royston, and
Christal Peterson Figueredo,
Miami, Fla.; nine grandchil
dren; and 10 great-grandchil
dren.

LULA - Elizabeth M.
“Cotton” Sisk, 84, died
Thursday, May 21, 2009, fol
lowing an extended illness.
Born on January 27, 1925,
in Banks County, she was the
daughter of the late Nando
and Lizzie Westbrook Cotton
and was the last of 15 chil
dren. She lived in Hall County
for 51 years and retired from
Leece-Neville with 28 years
of service. Mrs. Sisk was pre
ceded in death by her husband,
William Sisk; and a number of
brothers and sisters.

County, he was the son of the
late C.A. and
Corrie Venable
Smith. He was
retired from
General Motors
after more than 30 years of
employment, and in 1989
returned to Madison County
to live. He was a veteran, hav
ing served in the United States
Army during World War II.
Mr. Smith was preceded in
death by his wife, Mary Grace
Young Smith.

illness.
Born on December 22, 1939,
in Banks County, she lived in
Gainesville most of her life,
and worked at Pirkle's Cafe as
a cook for many years. Mrs.
Sullens was preceded in death
by her parents; and a sister,
Lucille Baker.
Survivors include sons, Ron
Sullens, Clarkesville, and
Harold Sullens, Gainesville;
a brother, J.C. Smith,
Bentonville, Ark.; five grand
children; two great-grandchil
dren; and a number of nieces
and nephews.

“Jack” Tatum, 92, died Friday,
May 22, 2009, at his residence
at Magnolia Hills Assisted
Living in Demorest.
Born on March 26, 1917,
in Palmetto, he was the son of
the late Robert
D. and Florence
Jackson Tatum,
and was preced-
ed in death by his
wife, Martha Edna Tomlinson.
He was a graduate of Mercer
University, Macon, and the
Southern Baptist Theological
Seminary, Louisville, Ky„ and
was ordained as a Baptist min
ister by the Rahmah Baptist
Church in Palmetto in 1937.
Churches he served include the
Clarkesville Baptist Church,
Clarkesville, First Baptist
Church, Cornelia, First Baptist
Church, Buford, Prince Avenue
Baptist Church, Athens, and
the Crawford Avenue Baptist
Church, Augusta. Following
his retirement, he served
as interim pastor of several
churches in Habersham and
Stephens County. During World
War II, he served as a United
States Army Chaplain in the
European Theater. Following
the war he served in the United
States Army Reserves, retiring
as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Survivors include a niece,
Jane T. Washington, Newnan;
and a nephew, David E. Tatum
Jr., Palmetto.
Memorial services were
held Sunday, May 24, at the
Bethlehem Baptist Church
with the Revs. Tommy Stowe
and Furman Lewis officiating.
Burial was in the church cem
etery.

Martha Jean Beadles Vernon,
86, died Friday, May 22,
2009.
Born in Okanogan, Wash.,
on September 9, 1922, she
was the daughter of the late
Rev. Owen and Alta Beadles.
She and her late husband,
Charles, lived in Jefferson
for 35 years before moving
to Florida. She was a gradu
ate of the University of Idaho
and worked for the American
Red Cross during World War
II as a home caseworker. She
was a retired social worker
for the Georgia Department
of Family and Children's
Services, was a member of the
First United Methodist Church
of Jefferson, the Quilters, the
United Methodist Women, the
Esther Circle, and the Stan
Escoe Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Vernon was preceded in
death by her beloved husband
of 62 years; a son, David R.
Vernon; and sisters, Delores
Jaquish and Joyce Adams.
Survivors include a daugh
ter and son-in-law, Betsy and
John Harrington, Leesburg,
Fla.; granddaughters, Suzanne
(Lane) Godsey and Jessica
Vernon, Arden, N.C., and
Kathleen Gurley, Atlanta;
grandsons, Ben (Elizabeth)
Vernon, Charlotte, N.C., and
Alex Gurley, Flowery Branch;
and a great-granddaughter,
Lillian Ruth Godsey.

February 9, 1915, she was the
daughter of the late U.S. and
Rilla Caudell Martin. Mrs.
Ward was preceded in death
by her husband, Broughton B.
Ward; daughter and son-in-law,
Geraldine and Lamb Davis;
grandson, Douglas Davis; son-
in-law, Ed Hannas; brothers,
Ruthford, Hoyt, Bud, Lloyd
and Vance Martin. She was a
member of Cornelia Christian
Church, where she served as
the church's food service coor
dinator for many years, and
was retired from Chicopee
Manufacturing Company with
35 years of dedicated service.
Survivors include daughters
and son-in-law, Laverne and
Efford Loudermilk and Glenda
Hannas, all of Cornelia; son
and daughter-in-law, Troy and
Crete Ward, Cornelia; sister,
Laurell Shockley, Toccoa; six
grandchildren; 11 great-grand
children; and five great-great-
grandchildren.

daughter of the late Lucien
Hebert and Eva Seymour. She
was a member of the First
United Methodist Church
of Searcy, Ark., and gradu
ated in 1944 as salutatorian at
Winnie-Stowell High School
in Chambers Co., Texas. Mrs.
Wardlow was preceded in
death by her husband, Ray
Donald Wardlow; and siblings,
Emmett Hebert and Ellison
Hebert, Velma Russum, Lois
Shane, and Betty Flickinger.
Survivors include children,
Sandra W. Prince, Danielsville,
and Dale M. Wardlow, Searcy,
Ark.; four grandchildren;
seven great-grandchildren; and
