Habitat dedication held for 6 th Madison Co. house
Madison County Habitat for
Humanity held a groundbreak
ing ceremony for its sixth house
June. 7.
The event was attended by
many volunteers as well as
friends and family of the new
homeowner Brandee Lawton
and her son Jeffrey.
Mitchell Hill, the volunteer
supervisor for this house and a
member of the board of directors
for Madison County Habitat for
Humanity, spoke of the giving
and receiving that volunteering
offers to those involved.
Patty Coulter, president of
MCHH, thanked all the vol
unteers, the many businesses
and others who donated time
and funds to build the house.
She also thanked Jackson EMC
members Operation Roundup
whose start up grant allowed
construction to begin. After a
prayer of dedication by Rev.
Calvin Ward, the keys to the
house were turned over to
Lawton, who tearfully thanked
those present and the commu
nity.
Without the thousands of
hours of community involve
ment and the thousands of dol
lars donated, Madison County
Habitat for Humanity could not
continue to provide this much-
needed housing, organizers
said.

Comer discusses garbage service
By Margie Richards
margie@mainstreetnews.com
Comer officials have heard
complaints from residents
about the city’s garbage ser
vice since AAA Sanitation
took over the service from city
employees June 1.
Council members said
Monday that there should be
a reduced rate for garbage cus
tomers for June, since trash
receptacles have not been
distributed. City clerk Steve
Sorrells said the receptacles
should be delivered by July 1.
The council said that garbage
service issues should improve
once the transition period is
over.
Trash pickup is on Tuesdays
for residents and businesses,
with an additional Thursday
pickup for businesses that
require it. Sorrells said the
council passed an ordinance
several years ago that requires
water customers to also pay for
garbage service, since it is a
health issue for the city.
The council declined to give
a three-year reimbursement to
businessman Ross Kesterson
for garbage service at his stor
age business, but agreed to not
bill him for future garbage ser
vice since he has another trash
pickup source.
The council heard that
Sorrells is requesting bidsto
repair a sewer line cover on
Hwy. 98. Sorrells said the
Department of Transportation
has requested that the cover be
repaired as the DOT is plan
ning to resurface Hwy. 98 from
the red light in Comer to Ila
soon.
The council also heard that
the 2008 city audit has been
completed.
The council agreed to spend
$225 for their portion of a cari
cature map of Madison County
and chose Comer city hall and
the fire station to be included
as drawings on the map.
Mayor Billy Burroughs told
the council that once repairs are
done to the chipper truck, the
council will have three sum
mer employees to help catch
up with mulching of tree and
limb debris. Sorrells said the
temporary workers’ pay will
be supplied through federal
stimulus monies.
Sorrells said one or two more
water line flushings may be
necessary, but no dates were
set during the meeting.
31 foreclosures set for July sale
Madison County’s foreclosure rate remains up in 2009.
There are 31 foreclosures reported for the July sale date in
Madison County. That’s up from 24 for June, but down from
35 in May. In the first seven months of 2009, there were 174
foreclosures in the county. In 2008, there were 260 foreclosures
in Madison County, up from 150 in both 2006 and 2007.

Natural gas prices
at record lows
Natural gas consumers in the Atlanta Gas Light service
area, could be paying too much for natural gas each month,
according to a press release from Leigh Anne Aaron, Natural
Gas Educator with the Madison County Extension Service in
Danielsville.
Many plans are available for natural gas customers, and it
is important to get the best deal possible. Also, there are spe
cial discounts and options through Atlanta Gas Light and the
natural gas marketers for senior citizens, Aaron noted.
She advises everyone to take a look at their natural gas
bill.
“If you are a senior paying more than 73 cents per therm
and have a customer service charge more than $2.95; or if you
are not a senior but are paying more than 78 cents a therm and
have a customer service charge of more than $3.95, you need
to call me,” Aaron said.
She can be reached at 706-795-2281 or by faxing a gas bill
to 706-795-5460. This is a free service.
“Don’t wait every day could be money lost,” Aaron said.
