61 st Annual Madison County Fair to light up Comer
By Nancy Bridges
Madison County UGA Cooperative Extension
Agent
The pages of the calendar tell it’s about 10
weeks until the gate opens for the Madison
County Fair, a tradition in the beautiful town
of Comer.
The Lions Club members generously give
their time and energy to make this fall home
town event which has taken place for the
last 61 years to the delight of people from
the Northeast Georgia area. Hundreds of
exhibits and community fair booths will be
entered in the fair this year.
I spoke with David McFarland, Comer
Lions Club Fair Committee, who tells me
that the fair will take place Tuesday, Sept.
29, through Saturday, Oct. 3.
Those interested in entering a craft, canned
good, sewing, crochet, knitting, or artwork
may obtain a copy of the 2009 rules at
the Madison County Extension Office, 97
Sunset Drive, Danielsville.
Fair check-in dates will be Friday, Sept.
25, from 2-5 p.m. or Sunday, Sept. 27, from
2-5 p.m.
Exhibits must stay all week and are picked
up at the end of the fair on Saturday, Oct. 3
from 9:30-10 p.m. only or on Sunday, Oct.
4, from 2-4 p.m.
Adults and youth will be judged separately
and premiums will be sponsored by the
Lions Club. Categories include needlework
of all types, sewing clothing and other items,
canning, fresh fruits and vegetables grown
by the exhibitor, quilts, artwork including
drawings, sketches, painting, photography,
woodwork, ceramic, pottery, metal craft,
baskets, floral arrangements and trash to
treasure.
Canned goods must be in sealed canning
jars using USDA guidelines. There is also a
honey and syrup category.
For more information concerning the
Individual Fair Exhibit competition, contact
the Madison County Extension Service or
Nancy Bridges at 706-795-2281.

St. Mary’s to donate eight emergency vehicles
Out-of-countv notes
Free workshop presented by
Tri-County Diabetes Task Force
St. Mary's Health Care System
will donate eight used emergency
vehicles to deserving community
organizations that can demon
strate they will put the former
ambulances to good use.
From now until Sept. 1, St.
Mary’s will accept propos
als from organizations that are
interested in one or more of the
ambulances. Any non-profit,
school, college or government
agency may apply. Applications
will be reviewed by St. Mary’s
and vehicles will be granted to
the organizations that St. Mary’s
determines will best use them to
serve the community.
The ambulances are available
because St. Mary's outsourced
its emergency medical services
to National EMS in March and
no longer needs the eight vehi
cles. Four of the ambulances are
van-type vehicles while the other
four are larger, truck-style ambu
lances. All are Fords, and range
from a 2006 model with just over
64,000 miles to a 1998 model
with nearly 235,000 miles.
"We have already awarded one
ambulance to St. Mary's Auxiliary
for use in picking up donations to
St. Mary’s Hospice House Thrift
Store,” said Stephanie Walsh,
grant specialist for St. Mary's
Foundation. “Our hope is that
these vehicles will help other ser
vice organizations in our area,
especially non-profits, improve
or expand their service to our
community.”
All vehicles will be trans
ferred “as is” with no warranties.
Organizations that receive them
will be responsible for repainting
the trucks and any other costs
associated with transporting them
or refitting them for a new use.
Proposals must include the
name, mission, goals and popula
tion served by the organization,
along with information about
how the ambulance will be used
and who it will serve. Winning
proposals must be consistent with
St. Mary’s mission to be a com
passionate healing presence in the
community, and agencies must
agree not to sell, transfer or give
the ambulance to another organi
zation or person. Preference will
be given to non-profit organiza
tions in the Northeast Georgia
area, but any qualifying organiza
tion may apply.
For complete application details
or for more information about
the former ambulances, contact
Walsh at 706-389-3928 or by
email at swalsh@stmarvsathens.
