Charlene Strickland urns the daughter of Robert Broome and Susan Addison Broome of
Danielsville Georgia. Her childhood home now houses the Madison County Board of
Education Office. She had a happy childhood surrounded by loving parents and three
sisters. Her father was the Postmaster and her mother was a full time homemaker. They
were active in the Danielsville Baptist Church. Sadness struck when her mother died very
unexpectedly. Their strong family love brought them through. Another tragic event came
when her baby sister, Robbie Ray, was hit by a drunk driver and permanently disabled. The
care given by all the sisters enabled Robbie to finish college, marry and have a family.
Mrs. Strickland graduated from the University of Georgia where she received her BS degree
in Home Economics and later her Masters Degree in Education. She married Howard
Strickland and built a Trank Lloyd Wright home just behind the High School. It was the
most unique house in Madison County at the time.
She taught Home Economics at the Madison County High School for 31 years and received
many accolades and awards for outstanding sendee. One example is "The Betty Crocker
Tour" with one of her outstanding students. She also served as State Chairman for the
Home Economics Education Association. Another highlight was to be a State Officer in
THA and travel to New York for the National Convention.
Mrs. Charlene Strickland
July 9,1921 - July 12, 2009
With her loving care and guidance, she profoundly influenced the lives of many young students. She was chosen “Star Teacher of
the Year" and the year book was dedicated to her. As a special tribute to Charlene, a large number of her students chose to be Home
Economics teachers and taught in schools around the state. Many of her former students are still close to her today. Because of
these teaching skills she was selected to assist in the training of student teachers going into Home Economics at the University of
Georgia.
Mrs. Strickland was an active member of the Danielsville Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School for 13 years and was a
faithful member of the Missionary Society.
Charlene played a leadership role in organizing the "Pilot's Club of Madison County." She was an officer and charter member. The
Pilot’s Club is still an active, viable organization serving Madison County today. She sewed on the committee to provide perpetual
care for the Danielsville Cemetery. The money collected at that time is still being used to keep the cemetery beautiful. Charlene
sewed as president and trustee of the Danielsville Woman’s Club. She and other members were instrumental in raising funds for
the new Eibrmy of Madison County.
Charlene and Howard lived most of their life on a farm. He had chicken houses and raised cows. She loved animals and one day
casually mentioned that she would love to have a little lamb. One day he came home with a truck load of sheep. “Oh Howard," she
said, “I just wanted ONE little lamb." Eater she got her wish when a mother lamb died and left one baby lamb. She took the little
lamb to her house and cared for it until it was old enough to return to the other sheep. Her name was "Little Susie.” They never
forgot each other.
She loved to take care of her niece and nephews. They thought she was "so cool" and so much fun. They loved to stay in an upstairs
bedroom at the top of the stairs. They would helped her cook. The nephews were taught “cake decorating” and actually helped her
complete some of her catering affairs.
Charlene was industrious and ambitious. She and Howard built a home in Vero Beach, Tlorida after they retired and became
antique collectors. After retirement she remained active in teaching and demonstrating “Floral Arrangements for Various
Occasions” and “Cake Decorating.” She loved catering for wedding receptions, luncheons, and special events.
Her special gift was her ability to give loving care to the young and old. She was a true “Florence Nightingale.” She assisted in
caring for her father, husband, and youngest sister until their death. We know she took comfort in doing all she could do for the
ones she loved.
Charlene was a lifetime learner and never stopped exploring new avenues of information. This was exciting and fun. Charlene
lived a life of sendee in the home, school and community. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, aunt, teacher and friend. She was
a cheerful homemaker and always made everyone feel welcome and happy. She was a joy to be around and a blessing to all who
knew her.
Charlene, Mrs. Strickland, your sisters, family and friends are so proud of you! Your life was such an inspiration and
example to all of us. What a wonderful giving life you have lived and indeed.... you have made a difference in this world.
God bless you!
