Pet of the week
The Madison Oglethorpe Animal Shelter has pets available for
adoption. This week’s featured pet is “Belle,” a 12-week old
Lab. “Seemingly she
had been abandoned
without her mother,”
a shelter staff member
said. “She has been
with us almost two
months now. When
she was brought in, a
small litter of choco
late labs had also been
surrendered, so we
put her with them and
they immediately took
to each other. Now
Belle is the only one
left; her adopted siblings
have already found homes." Her adoption fee is 75, which includes,
all age appropriate vaccines, worming, flea/tick treatment and spay
ing. To learn more, call 706-795-2868 or visit the shelter.

Comer Fanner’s Market
Table Talk meets Fight Club
By Susan Casey-Voytik
Correspondent
Last Saturday’s Comer Farmers’ Market
was nearly “taken out for the count,”
but Table Talk itself remained on top
of the early onslaught of market-goers.
Determined vendors contended with the
final round of shoppers who hung in there
‘till the end for remaining bargains. It
was a win-win situation as everyone went
home a champ.
In this comer was the reigning local
favorite fresh produce, including a new
item: apples. Hard hitting sell-outs
were heirloom orange and yellow pear
tomatoes, butter, green and rattlesnake
pole beans, sweet banana, cayenne and
assorted bell peppers, okra, yellow squash,
black beauty eggplant, Swiss chard
(Plato’s pick), watermelon, enormous can
taloupe and the swaggering crowd-pleaser
com!
In the opposing comer, was the formi
dable challenger prepared foods, sporting
a new line-up including chow-chow, pep
per relish, salsa, sold-out cheese straws
and strawberry and blueberry muffins.
Southern Charm Farm was knocked out in
the second round after taking a pounding
on the pound cake and a hit to the bread
basket. Record-time artisan bread sell-outs
were a sweet defeat.
New non-food items were shower gel,
body spray, gift baskets of fine cleansing
products, a new scent of goafs milk soap,
ylang ylang and patchouli. The fragrant,
winding aroma of hand-crafted bath bars
beckoned to market-goers who followed
their satisfied senses.
Most missed were Sarah Blackmon's
mouth-watering cakes. Most popular was
“walkin’ the dog,” and the best-kept secret
was Emily Parham’s beautiful singing!
The Pilot Club of Madison County
made its debut selling cookbooks and
colorful, woven afghans depicting
Madison County history. Show your sup
port Monday, Aug. 10, at the Danielsville
bloodrive at Trinity Baptist Church spon
sored by the Pilot Club.
The CFM welcomed Dylan Brooks,
MCHS senior and 4-H member, as he
held a bake sale benefiting Project Safe, a
non-profit organization dedicated to vic
tims of domestic violence.
His volunteer work will be highlighted
when he performs in the March 2010,
“Dancing with the Athens Stars,” Project
Safe fund-raiser. For details contact jane-

FARMERS’ FEEDBACK
Brimming bags of bluberries belong to
Danielsville residents Denise and Alan
Pate.
“After Alan was laid-off as an I.T. soft
ware developer seven years ago,” Denise
explains, “a friend suggested he farm
blueberries!”
Alan also grows raspberries, blackber
ries and seasonal vegetables, which are
sold at the CFM. When Denise isn’t at the
Athens office of A.I. insurance, she turns
Alan's “berried treasures" into syrups,
jams and fried pies. Denise exclaims with
cheer, “Nothing gets wasted!”
Having a sense of accomplishment and
adapting to a more wholesome, sustaining
lifestyle is the silver-lining to job-loss.
The Pates’ story of successfully over
coming the odds gives hope to all taking
sucker-punches in today’s work force.
Stand tall and don’t give in. When you
feel like you're losing the fight, get your
"second wind” at the Comer Farmers’
Market, where the old one-two is a “how
do you do?!” See you there!

from the Comer Farmers’ Market.
