was the son of the late Frank
and Adell Forrester Morris.
He was retired from the
D.O.T. and was a veteran,
having served in the United
States Army during World
War II. He was
of the Baptist
denomination.
Mr. Morris
was preceded in death
by his wife, Minnie Ruth
Reid Morris; a son, Bobby
Morris; brothers, Wilton and
Coleman Morris; and sister,
Eunice Sheridan.
Survivors include a daugh
ter and son-in-law, Linda and
Steve Wehunt, Gainesville;
daughter-in-law and her
husband, Doris Morris and
Jimmy Anglin, Maysville;
grandchildren, Amy
Lunsford, Cindy Wehunt,
Ashley Morris and Reggie
Morris; great-grandchil
dren, Dylan Mitchell, Tori
Lunsford, Ansley Lunsford
and Zane Novotny.
Luneral services were held
Tuesday, July 28, at Mt.
Carmel Baptist Church with
the Rev. Ralph O. Smith
officiating. Burial was in the
church cemetery.

Nix, 89, died Lriday, July
24, 2009, at BJC Medical
Center in Commerce.
Bom in Jackson County,
he was the son of the late
William Thomas and Alma
Montgomery Nix. He was
retired from Roper Pump and
was a member of Hudson
Lodge #294 L&AM and the
Bethany United Methodist
Church. Mr. Nix was pre
ceded in death by his wife,
Geneva Kesler Nix.
Survivors include a son,
Tommy Nix, Nicholson;
daughters, Brenda Woodall,
Toccoa, and Rita Wilson,
Commerce; daughter-in-law,
Pat Nix, Maysville; sisters,
Lydia Allen, Gainesville,
and Leita Nix, Commerce;
nine grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren.
Luneral services were held
Sunday, July 26, in the cha
pel of Little-Ward Luneral
Home with the Revs. Johnny
Ray and B obby Ivester offici
ating. Burial was at Jackson
Memorial Gardens.

A. Lowe Archer. She was
retired from Southern Bell
and was a member of the
Telephone Pioneers.
Survivors include her hus
band of 51 years, Donald C.
Oldham; a daughter, Melanie
Kaye Patton, her husband
James H. and grandchildren,
James W. Patton, Savanah E.
Patton and Duncan E. Patton
of Comer; and a number of
nieces and nephews.
Luneral services were held
Sunday, July 12, at Lord &
Stephens Chapel with the
Revs. Dan Luller, Irvin Goss
and Bob Nash officiating.
Burial was in Evergreen
Memorial Park.

Ethelene “Rich” Phillips,
92, died Monday, July
20, 2009, at New Horizon
Nursing Home following an
extended illness.
Bom on March 16, 1917,
in Banks County, she was
the daughter of the late Amie
and Nellie Sheridan Rich.
She was a retired seam
stress and was of the Baptist
denomination. Mrs. Phillips
was preceded in death by
her husband, Lletcher P.
Phillips.
Survivors include a
daughter, Marie Phillips
Rogers, Gainesville; broth
er, Clyde Rich, Gainesville;
granddaughters and spous
es, Lynn Rogers, Jane
and Brian Bowmar, all of
Gainesville, and Susan and
Chuck Titshaw, Hoschton;
great-grandsons, Kristopher

and a number of nieces and
nephews.

1950, in Hall County, he
was the son

Harris Poole

the late Wallace J. Poole
and. He worked as a con
struction contractor during
his lifetime, was a veteran,
having served in the United
States Army, and was a
member of TimberRidge
Baptist Church.
Survivors in addition to
his mother include a son and
daughter-in-law, Chris and
Beth Poole, their daughter,
Isabelle “Izze” Poole; son,
Mark Poole, Gainesville;
daughter, Heather Poole,
Gainesville; brothers and
sisters-in-law, Marty and

brothers-in-law, Sue Ladd

with interment in the church

TOCCOA - J.D. Saylors,
64, died Monday, July 20,
2009, at his residence.
Bom on June 14, 1945,
in Hart County, he was the
son of Dorothy Litzgerald
Saylors of Toccoa and the
late J.B. Saylors. He had
lived in Commerce for 15
years before making Toccoa
his home. He worked for
Stovall Building Supplies for
a number of years, and loved
to garden, read and cook.
Mr. Saylors was preceded
in death by his wife, Mary
Ellen Lincannon Saylors; a
stepson, Danny Vamer; and
brother, Guy Saylors.
Survivors in addition to
his mother include a daugh
ter, Lori Saylors, Toccoa;
son, JD Saylors Jr., Toccoa;
stepchildren, Dana Herron
and Larry Lincannon, both
of Commerce; eight grand
children; two sisters and a
brother-in-law, Lorene and
Jimmy Deal, DeLuniak
Springs, Lla., and Carolyn
Bearden, Cleveland; brothers
and sisters-in-law, Charles
and Peggy Saylors, Aaron
and Joyce Saylors, and
Travis and Grace Saylors, all

the Zebulon Baptist Church
Cemetery with the Rev.

the graveside service.

having enjoyed playing the
piano and singing. Mrs.
Turner was preceded in
death by a brother, Adrian
Oliver; and father-in-law,
John William Turner.

‘Doc’ Vancel
JEFFERSON - Dr.
Tilman “Doc” Vancel, 80,
died Saturday, July 25,2009,
at Athens Regional Medical
Center in Athens.
Bom on June 10, 1929,
in Tazewell, Claiborne
County, Tenn., he was the
son of the late Curtis and
Ethel Vancel. His education
was in the public schools
of Tennessee and Lincoln
Memorial University. After
attending graduate school at
Perdue University and the
University of Tennessee, he
completed his education at
the University of Tennessee
School of Dentistry. His
dental practice in Jefferson
was the delight of his and
his wife Martha’s life for
over 40 years.
The sides were his home
and relaxation, as he flew,
using a skill he first learned
in high school. He was a
mason, a member of Victory
Baptist Church, and associ
ated dental organizations.
Survivors include his wife
of 50 years, Martha Vancel,
Jefferson; sons, Lewis Ray
Vancel, Mulberry, Ind.,
and Harold D. Vancel,
Jefferson; stepsons, Charles
and Ronnie Stanley,
Milledgeville; a sister, Statia
V. Treece, Mulberry, Ind.;
brother, Thomas Vancel,
Thomasville; grandchildren,
Curtis Vancel, Mulberry,
Ind., Samantha and Dakota
Poppe, Mulberry, Ind., and
John Stanley, Milledgeville.
Luneral services were held
Tuesday, July 28, at Galilee
Christian Church with
Minister Tom Plank officiat
ing. Burial was in the church
cemetery. Serving as pall
bearers were Curtis Vancel,
Grant Siebert, Hoyt Harris,
Bob Morgan, James Deaton,
Damon Wilbanks, Dan
Torbett and Bill Wentworth.
Members of the Masonic
Lodge served as Honorary
Pallbearers.

He was a veteran, having
served in the United States
Army during World War II.
Mr. Vandiver was preced
ed in death by sons, Mark
Daniel Vandiver and Hoyt
Lee Vandiver; and a daugh
ter, Lisa Lynn Vandiver. He
loved his family and grand
children, fishing, gardening
and woodworking, loved
ones stated.
Survivors include his lov
ing wife of 63 years, Alma
(Baker) Vandiver, Braselton;
daughters and son-in-law,
Rosie Mae and Walter
Clark, Winder, Imojean
Mull, Jonette and Walter
Storey, all of Jefferson; son
and daughter-in-law, Harold
D. and Carol Vandiver,
