BILL AND ARLENE WOOD CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF MARRIAGE The Rev. and Mrs. Bill Wood, Hull, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Friday, July 24. Bill and Arlene were united in marriage July 24, 1959 in Cordele at First United Methodist Church. The couple has two children: Teresa Davis (Dan), who reside in Homerville; and Steve Wood (Kim) who reside in Cullman, Ala. They also have three grandchildren; the late Matt Pennington , Hahira; Ryan Pennington, Statesboro; and Caleb Wood, Cullman, Ala. Mr. Wood retired as pastor of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in 2002 and Mrs. Wood retired as financial assistant at First Baptist Church of Athens in 2008. Bands, barbecue set for Adam Coker benefit Aug. 8 “Three Bands for Adam,” a fund-raiser for recent wreck victim Adam Coker, will be held at the Comer Fairgrounds on Saturday, Aug. 8, with gates opening at 5 p.m. In addition, chicken barbecue plates will be sold prior to and during the benefit for $7 per plate. Plates will be sold between 3 and 4 p.m. before the benefit begins. The Josh Daniel Band will perform from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. followed by Down South, who will perform from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with the Bobby Compton Band performing from 9 to 10:30 p.m. A $5 minimum donation is required for admission. Kids 12- and-under will be admitted free. Adam Coker is the son of Dale and Gina Coker, Comer. Adam was injured in an accident on April 27 while he and Tyler Williams were on their way to school. He was severely injured and in the hospital for three and a half weeks and is still in physical therapy. Call 706-783-5350 to pre-order barbecue plates. We have shown many new families through the school and athletic facilities, and we praise the Lord for the enrollment of a good number of new students. Burden, Jordan, White reunion set for Aug. 15 A reunion of descendants of the Burden, Jordan, and White families of Elbert, Hart, and Franklin counties will be held Saturday, Aug. 15, at 10 a.m. at the Bowman Community Center, 209 East Railroad Street. Participants are asked to bring pictures, family pedigree charts, flash drives, CDs and family mementos. Those attending are also asked to bring covered dishes. All paper products and ice will be provided by the children of Oscar Nabors. “Come and fellowship with us during church services and have lunch with us afterwards,” organizers said. Lutz family benefit set for Aug. 22 A benefit is being organized for former sheriff's deputy, Sergeant Tom Lutz, and his wife, Leah, of Danielsville, to help alleviate some of the financial burdens they are facing due to health problems, according to organizers. Recently, Sgt. Lutz was diagnosed with a lung disease as a result of chemical exposure while serving the Gulf War. According to a press release, his doctors said his only option for a full recovery is a lung transplant. Lutz has been forced to apply for disability, is unable to work and is left with a barrage of medical treatments, medications ' ^ In Loving Memory SYLVIA M. Love, Your Family V, and constant medical expenses, the release said. “This diagnosis has put a severe strain on the Lutz family and has overwhelmed them both financially and emotionally,” the release said. Mrs. Lutz was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a disabling neurological disease, in 2003. The disease has progressed over the last six years, leaving her with limited mobility. “Even through the difficult treatments, along with the painful and debilitating effects of MS, she has taken care of her household and continues to volunteer for different causes," benefit organizers said. “She has been a constant advocate for the citizens of this county as well as others.” Annual Kirk reunion set for Aug. 23 The annual Kirk family reunion will be held Sunday, Aug. 23, at the Danielsville Volunteer Fire Department, beginning at 11 a.m. The fire hall is located just off the old courthouse square in Danielsville. “Please bring a well-stocked basket of your favorite food and drink (iced tea will be furnished)," organizers said. All utensils, cups, and plates and ice will be available at the fire hall. “Be sure to bring family pictures and other articles of interest to share with everyone,” organizers added.
