AUGUST 20. 2009 On the Record Man faces numerous charges after chase A Commerce man faces numerous charges, including DUI/drugs, after he allegedly drove off without paying for $30 worth of gas at Neese Grocery on Hwy. 106 South. Dennis Caleb Blanton, 20, 7614 Hwy. 98 West, was also charged two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of leaving the scene of an accident, two counts of obstruction of officers, two counts of interference with gov ernment property, two counts of criminal trespass, four counts of failure to stop for a stop sign, two counts of limitations on overtak ing and passing on the left, and one count each of driving on the wrong side of the road, fleeing or attempting to elude police offi cers, reckless driving, possession of marijuana, gas theft, driving without a license, failure to yield entering roadway and failure to drive within a single lane. According to the incident report, deputy Michael Moore was dispatched to be on the look out for Blanton’s vehicle, a 2000 beige Nissan Maxima with its mirrors broken off, which was reported to be traveling north on Hwy. 106. Moore met the vehicle on Hwy. 106, turned around and attempted to stop it. The vehicle pulled over, but the driver took off as Moore was exiting his cruiser. Blanton led deputies on a chase and was stopped a short time later. In another arrest, Heriberto Mercado, 18,9574 Hwy. 72 West, Hull, was arrested for disorderly conduct and obstruction of an officer. According to the incident report. Deputy Klint Segars and deputy Jeff Vaughn responded to Tranquility Mobile Home Park on Hwy. 72 regarding a man “running around disturbing the neighborhood - hitting cars with his fist and out of control.” Deputies found the man standing at the entrance of the mobile home park and when he saw them he reportedly “took a defensive stance and began swinging his arms as if he were boxing." Deputy Segars ordered the man to the ground but he did not comply and was tased. Mercado reportedly fell to the ground and was taken to jail. Colbert man faces eight charges after chase A Colbert man faces fel ony drug charges and eight traffic violations after a high-speed chase last week in Commerce. Christopher J. Coon, 25, 1165 Hargrove Lake Road, Colbert, is charged with pos session of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, driving with a suspended license, fleeing and attempt ing to elude, operating an unregistered vehicle, reck less driving, driving in the median, failure to maintain a lane, driving on the wrong side of the road, no insur ance, possession of tools for the commission of a crime and obstruction of officers. The report said Coon sped away toward Athens on U.S. 441. Near Whitehill School Road, the report said Coon encountered traffic, crossed over the median and headed south in the northbound lane of U.S. 441 before attempt ing to cross back to the southbound lane. In the course of attempting to get back into the proper lane, the vehicle’s driver- side tires blew. The vehicle stopped, Coon exited and ran, only to be tackled by the officer. Coon refused to let the offi cer search the vehicle, but a Banks County deputy soon arrived with a drug dog. which alerted on the vehicle. The officer said he found a black book bag contain ing two bags of suspected methamphetamine. Elbert Mullins, Jr., 18, of 3511 Hwy. 106 South, Hull, was charged with one count of aggravated battery after deputy Alan Stratton was dispatched to the high school for a fight in progress. According to the incident report, when Stratton arrived he found a male student lying on the ground surrounded by teachers and staff. Stratton noted that the victim had exces sive damage to his face, mouth and jaw. Mullins had been taken to another room after a staff mem ber reportedly pulled him off the victim. Mullins told deputy Stratton that the victim had attempted to strike him and that he was defending himself. Mullins was arrested and taken to the Madison County Jail. Madison County EMS transported the victim to St. Mary’s Hospital. In another incident, child molestation was reported on Hwy. 72 near Colbert when deputies were summoned to a residence to meet with a man who said he was concerned that his 15-month old granddaughter may be being molested by her stepfather. The man stated that the child’s stepfather allegedly molested two of the complainant’s daughters several years ago and that they had just told him about it. The deputy noted that the man was clearly concerned for the welfare of his granddaughter, who often stays with her stepfather. Other incidents investigated by the sheriff’s department this past week include: •Criminal trespass was reported on Camp Halinan Road. •Harassing phone calls were reported on Madison Boulevard in Colbert. •Theft by receiving stolen property was reported on Colbert- Smithonia Road. •Theft by shoplifting was reported on was reported on Hwy. 98 West. •Forgery in the first degree was reported on South Street in Colbert. •Criminal trespass was reported on Crawford W. Long Road. •Harassing phone calls were reported on Willis Glenn Road. •A vehicle was entered on Hwy. 106 South at Fleeman Brown Road. •Burglary was reported on Madison Boulevard in Colbert. Two injured in wreck Two people were taken the hospital for treatment last week following a wreck on Hwy. 106 South at Old lla Road. According to the Georgia State Patrol, a 2006 Chevrolet HHR driven by Wallace Easley, 79, of Hull, was traveling north on Hwy. 106 about 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, when Easley apparently lost control of the vehicle. It then veered off the road, struck a utility pole and flipped several times before ending up on its top on the northbound shoulder of the road. The driver and a front seat passenger, Shelby Easley, 69, were taken to Athens Regional Medical Center by Madison County EMS with unspecified injuries.
