Quarterback ... continued from page IB Either way, the coach said he's less concerned about who’s starting at the position and more about devising a plan to beat the Bulldogs. "The bottom line is what is it going to take to beat Rockdale County?” coach Owens said. The coach said he doesn’t plan to tailor tire offense much if Turner does start. "There might be a few things we drop out before it's over with,” Owens said. "But for the most part, it’s going to be about what we would have done either way.” Turner, normally a receiver and free safety, took over the first team snaps Friday against Franklin County and led the Raiders to a second-quarter score, throwing a 20-yard touchdown to Patrick McCrary. What Turner may have lacked in style points, he made up for with grit, coach Owens said. "He was rough, but the biggest thing was the attitude more so than the physical performance,” he said. "He exhibited a lot of confidence. He didn’t back down one step." As forthe incumbent quarterback, Jacob Owens’ concussion appears to be "very, very" mild, according to coach Owens. The plan was to hold Jacob out of at least Monday’s practice and then re-evaluate him to make sure there were no lingering symptoms of a concussion. As for the shoulder injury, coach Owens said he’s approaching it similarly to tlie concussion. “It's kind of like the head, we'll see — continuing therapy and see ing how far it goes,” he said. Injuries aside, Madison County goes into the Rockdale County game coming off what was gener ally a solid scrimmage against the Lions. Defensively, the Raiders shut out the Lions and picked up four turn overs. Offensively, Jamal Cooper accounted for Madison County’s other score, taking an option pitch 41 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. Though Madison County com mitted its share of penalties and mistakes, all errors seemed "real correctable,” Owens said. More than anything, the coach was impressed by the Raiders' energy level for a practice game. "Tire biggest thing about the scrimmage, I was really pleased with the effort; I was really pleased with the intensity level of our kids,” he said. Softball... continued from page IB Madison County’s victory over Habersham sets up a huge early season subregion matchup today (Thursday) at Apalachee. The Wildcats won the north sub- region last year. "We start off with the two best teams right off the bat," Kesler said. "If we can win that one (today), we’ll kind of be in the driver’s seat.” Prior to the Habersham Central win, Madison County went 5-1 and finished as runners-up in the gold division of its own Leadoff Classic at the Madison County Recreation Department. "It was a good weekend for us," Kesler said. The one blemish was Madison County’s first loss of the season. The Raiders fell 4-1 to North Oconee in the fifth game of the tournament. But Kesler called his team’s 14-2 win over Franklin County in the fourth game its “most com plete game so far.” The Leadoff Classic offered him plenty to assess. "That’s why it’s so good to play that tournament early," he said. "You not only get to see good things, but you get to see things that you need to work on.” MCHS 3, Oglethorpe Co. 1 MCHS 000 200 1 — 3 OCHS 000 000 1 — 1 Hitting: Duncan 2-3; Gibson 1-3, 2-run HR; Peeples 1-3 Pitching: Smith (W) 7IP, 4H, 1 ER, 3K, 0BB MCHS 14, Stephens Co. 2 MCHS 720 5 — 14 SCHS 0110 — 2 Hitting: Peeples 3-4, RBI; Bolin 2-2, HR, 2RBI; Osborne 4-4, 2RBI; LaZear, Ducan, Atkinson, Whieldon all with one hit Pitching: Boggs (W) 4IP, 3H, 1 ER, 2BB, 8K MCHS 8, Elbert Co. 0 ECHS 000 00 — 0 MCHS 004 04 — 8 Hitting: Osborne 3-3, RBI; Duncan 2-3 RBI; Bates 2-2; Gibson 1-2; LaZear 1-3; Mann 1-2; Boggs 1-3 Pitching: Smith 2IP, OH, 0ER, 2BB, 2K; Boggs 3 IP, 1H, OR, 4K, 0BB MCHS 14, Franklin Co. 2 MCHS 030 056 — 14 FCHSOOO 110 — 2 Hitting: Gibson 2-3, RBI; Osborne 2-4, 2RBI; Bates 2-3; Atkinson 1-4; Skelton 1-3, 3RBI; Bolin 1-2, RBI; Peeples 1-4, RBI; LaZear 1-4 Pitching: Gibson (W) 6IP, 4H, 2ER, 2BB, 6K North Oconee 4, MCHS 1 NOHS 110 001 1 — 4 MCHS 000 010 0—1 Hitting: LaZear 1-4; Bolin 1-3; Duncan 1-3; Osborne 1-2; Bates 1-3, RBI Pitching: Gibson 7IP, 7H, 4ER, 2BB, 2K MCHS 13, Lumpkin Co. 7 LCHS 000 070 — 7 MCHS 104 170—13 Hitting: Gibson 2-3, RBI; Osborne 2-3, 3RBI; Bolin 1-4; Ducan 1-3; Skelton 1 A; Atkinson 1-3; Boggs 1-1 Pitching: Boggs 4 2/3IP, 5H, 1ER, 2BB, 4K; Smith (W) 1 1/3IP, 2H, 0BB, OK MCHS 2, Hab. Owens said Madison County's challenge last year was sim ply chasing down Rockdale County’s speedy running backs. Now, the Bulldogs appear to be doing a better job of concealing the football, based on scrimmage J footage, “Last year, they didn’t really do as good a job of hiding who had the football, but the chal lenge was just catching them,” Owens explained. “This year, crap, not only do you have to catch them, you've got to figure out who’s got the dam thing.” Of course, a team must have the right players to make the wing-T work, but Rockdale County appears to have those pieces in place, “You’ve got a certain amount of speed and talent to make it effective, and they’ve got that,” Owens said. The Madison County defense goes into the season opener hav ing shut out Franklin County, 13-0, this past Friday. The Raiders seek the pro gram’s first victory in nearly a year, having last won Sept. 12, 2008, against Monroe Area. J* our STRENGTH. ..
