SEPTEMBER 10, 2009 — PAGE 7A Social News Rotary builds ramp for Mattie Crowder HOLMAN AUTRY BAND Holman Autry Band to play MCHS benefit The Holman Autry Band will present a concert in the Madison County High School gym on Saturday, Sept. 19. The band comprises members from Madison County who have been playing together to cre ate an original sound and style, according to the press release. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for the 7 p.m. performance. All ages are welcome, organizers said. Tickets are $10 at the door. Children ages 10 and under will be admitted free of charge. The concert is presented by the MCHS Chorus. Proceeds will help to under write the choral program, orga nizers said. The Rotary Club of Madison County built a 22-foot ramp for 81-year-old Mattie Crowder, who lives at 917 McCannon Morris Road in Hull. Crowder, who is in a wheelchair and on oxygen, lives with her daughter, who was having difficulty getting her in and out of the house in the wheelchair. Crowder has one daughter, four grandchildren and six greatgrand children and attends the First AME Methodist Church when she is able. The family made a donation to the Rotary Club. Workers on the ramp included Artry Bishop, Jerry Bond, Jerry Coutant, Roy Gandy, Tony Taylor, Susan Taylor, Bob Anderson, Ed Brown, Alton Rowe, Bob Padilla, Johnny Bond and Erwin Hardeman. What’s happening Collins ladies to host party The women of the Collins Volunteer Fire Department will host a Tupperware party on Sept. 13, at 2 p.m., at Collins VFD at 8631 Hwy. 172, Comer. “Come and get free stuff' or just come and see us all,” organizers said. Child Safety Seat Check Day set for Sept. 19 The Madison County Pilot Club is sponsoring a Child Safety Seat Check Day on Saturday, Sept. 19, in the Ingles parking lot on Hwy 29 in Hull from 10 a.m. to noon. This event is being conducted by Randall Townley of the Northeast Georgia Rural Road Initiative and certified checkers from the area, according to the press release. All seats which are deemed to be unsafe will be replaced, the release stated. Child, vehicle and parent or caregiver must be present for the fitting of the seat or booster seats. According to reports, (American Academy of Pediatrics, Georgia Highway Safety and National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration) motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children from the ages of 2 to 14 and a high percentage of these deaths could be prevented with the proper use of car seats and seat belts. Rural Georgia has the lowest use rates in the state and among the lowest in the country, according to officials, hi addition, it is estimated that four out of five seats are incorrectly installed and that many others which have been recalled are still in use. Account set up for Henry Jones An account has been set up at Merchants and Farmers Bank to help cover the medical bills of Henry Jones, former chief of the Collins Volunteer Fire Department, who is suffering from cancer. “He gave the Collins Fire Department 22 years and was a foster parent of about 20 kids in the county,” friends said. “He helped all he could when he could. Friends of library hosting book sale The Friends of the Madison County Library will have a book sale Sept. 18-26 at the Madison County Library in Danielsville. High quality books and more will be available at the best prices around, Friends members said. Hardback books are $1 and paperbacks are 50 cents. “All funds raised go to support the Madison County Library and its commitment to the community,” organizers said. Military Compton completes basic training Army reserve Pvt. William T. Compton has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning in Columbus. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier was trained in drill and ceremonies, weap ons, map reading, tactics, mili tary courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills, battlefield opera tions and tactics. He also used various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman. Compton is a 2008 graduate of Madison County High School. Out-of-county notes Benefit planned for Seagraves family A benefit has been planned for Scott and Jennifer Seagraves, who lost their Commerce home in a fire on Aug. 1. The benefit will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Jesus Saves/Baptist Tabernacle Church, located on Hwy. 441, between Nicholson and Commerce. Barbecue sandwich plates, with baked beans and applesauce, will be sold for $6 each. Annual Teacher Reuse Store draws 226 Two hundred twenty-six teachers attended the Teacher Reuse Store at the Athens Clarke County Recycling Facility last month. Teachers from Madison, Clarke, Oconee and Oglethorpe counties attended the event to collect free supplies for their classrooms. Twelve tons of materials were collected from local businesses.
