MCMS • continued from page IB the momentum early, forcing three-and-outs in the first quarter and getting on the board first with a second-quarter touchdown pass from Johnson to Freeman. Hart County, however, scored late in the sec ond quarter to take an 8-6 lead that it wouldn’t relinquish. Drake noted that mistakes hindered Madison County's second half effort with the Mustangs giving up big plays on defense and fum bling the football and committing penalties on offense. Racing Hull’s Chamberlain takes title in Stock V-8 class By Heather Rhoads Correspondent After a season-long battle for a points championship, it all came down to the very last points race of the season for three of the seven divisions at Hartwell Speedway. For Hull's Ricky Chamberlain and George Fortson of the Stock V-8 class, it came down to a mere two points of separation. When the night was over, it would be those same two points that would still separate the two for a championship. George Fortson would wait to the very last lap of the race to take the lead from Otis Fleeman and claim what he thought was the 2009 Stock V-8 Championship. A pro test, however, from Chamberlain would see Fortson disqualified on technical merits. Fortson would in-tum protest Chamberlain, who would also be disqualified on technical merits. However, because neither driver was allotted any points for this event, the original point standings held up, allowing Chamberlain to claim the championship. Another class to go down to the wire in the points chase was the Stock Four Cylinder class with only a seven-point separation between front runner Justin Lord and Comer's Jimmy Little, Lord won that race, however, and Little finished fourth. In other action involving Madison County drivers over the weekend at Hartwell Speedway, Chad Hoopaugh took first in the Modified Street division while Comer's Chuck Finch placed sixth in that race. Danielsville's Josh Wade was 10 th in Stock Four Cylinder racing, and Colbert’s Robin Collins and Comer’s Mark Parham finished third and fifth, respectively, in the Limited Late Model classification. Colbert’s Kenny Collins was sixth in Late Crate Model racing. THIS WEEKEND Racers gear-up for the Georgia State Championships this week- end at Lavonia, with racing in eight divisions and thousands of dollars and trophies up for grabs. The Madison County High School softball team gathers around pitcher Sarah Smith during a recent game. The team won the Shaw Invitational over the weekend, going 5-0 and run ning its winning streak to 11 games. Ben Munro/staff Softball.. • continued from page IB Madison County beat Hardaway (8-0), Jordan (17-0), Cherokee (4-3) and Class AAAAA’s no. 3-ranked team Greenbrier (6-3) and then rallied to down Lowndes (6-5) to win the coveted gold divi sion title. "We've played in it several years, but we had never won it all ... It was a big weekend for us,” Kesler said. Madison County had to go through several larger classification schools to win the trophy. "Saturday, we saw that we were playing three Class AAAAA teams, so that was exciting,” Kesler said. “That’s what we go down there for, to play good teams.” But Kesler said his team will “hang its hat” on its 6-5 win over Class AAAAA Lowndes County in the championship game. Due to time constraints, the sixth inning was the final inning, and Madison County trailed 5-4. But the Raiders tied the ballgame that inning and won in the tie-breaker in the seventh. Leading hitters for the tournament were Sam LaZear, who went 11-for-18 and scored nine runs; Haley Peeples, who went 9-for-18 and scored five runs; and Olivia Duncan, who was 5-for-14. On the mound, Erin Gibson went 3-0 and Sarah Smith was 2-0. Kesler said the team’s slappers and speed suc cessfully put pressure on opposing defenses in the title run. "All 14 players had a role over the weekend in the five wins,” Kesler said.
