Madison County players, coaches and fans celebrate last week after the Raiders’ go-
ahead touchdown against Cedar Shoals. Ben Munro/staff
Sickness slows Raider freshmen in 16-0 loss
The lingering effect of the recent flu bug at the
Madison County High School Freshmen Academy
was evident as a short-handed Raider ninth grade
team fell 16-0 to Cedar Shoals last Thursday (Sept.
17).
“With all that flu going around we had half the
team out sick last week,” coach William Trimier
said. "But we hung in there and played a good
game.”
Madison County's freshmen team is off again
this week. It takes on Clarke Central Oct. 1 on the
road.
Meanwhile, the Madison County (0-1) junior var
sity team still seeks its first win after its game with
Cedar Shoals last Thursday was called in the sec
ond half due to weather. The game was tied 0-0.
The junior varsity squad returns to action Oct. 1
at home against Clarke Central.

became a complete mudfest by the time we raced
after the college races," Cornett said. “On the other
hand, I was excited they were allowed that opportu
nity. It’s rare to race in those conditions, therefore it
was fun to see them mix it up in the mud.”
Brakhage, who finished 98 th out of a field of 194,
was followed by Dalton Owensby (153 rd , 21:47),
Scott Barnes (156 th , 22:00), Codey Brakhage (167 th ,
22:26), Mauro Ortiz (170 th , 22:31), Chris Brown
(190 th , 25:35) and Brett Coggins (194 th 26:56).
“It’s one of those races that they should look back
on and remember not for the performance but for
the experience,” Cornett said. “I am proud of all the
runners who started and finished on Saturday. They
all deserve credit.”
Raiders running in the junior varsity race were
Austin Kelley (219 th , 26:16), Eh Smallwood (244 th ,
28:45), Mark Pulliam (248 th , 29:10), Drew Cofer
(257 th , 30:39), Taylor Crouse (258 th , 30:48) and
Kyle Manning (261, 31:20)
Madison County runs today (Thursday) at home
against Commerce, East Jackson and Jackson

Trey Cleveland later picked off a pass to set
up Madison County’s final score, a 25-yard
aerial from Wesley Johnson to Antonio
Waters.
Drake noted the defensive efforts of Eric
Williams, “who played great in the secondary”
with four pass-breakups.
Madison County’s defense came up with
three interceptions and one fumble recovery

more athletic than Rockdale
County (Madison County's first
opponent) but not as much as
Cedar Shoals, Owens said. He
added that the Seminoles are very
well coached and “better balanced
that most folks.”
Meanwhile, Madison County
enters the game averaging 36.3
points per game in its last three
contests and 241.5 yards on the
ground in its last two games. The
Raiders piled up 186 yards on
the ground in the first half in last
week’s victory over Cedar Shoals.
“The offensive line is getting bet
ter every week ... Last year, we
were pretty much right handed and
everyone knew it,” Owens said.
Of course, the Cedar Shoals stats
and the victory that came with it are
now in the past, and Owens said it's
important that his team remember
that. The celebration of the Cedar
Shoals win ended Sunday, he said.
“If our kids keep buying into that,
we have a chance to be successful,”
Owens said.

the Wildcats are second place in 8-AAAA North
— that the region go this route.
“It was his suggestion and everybody agreed to
it,” Kesler said.
Madison County, which beat everyone in its
division, will receive a first-round bye. The no. 1
seed also means that Madison County will stay put
for the region tournament.
The region decided prior to the season that the
North division champion would have hosting rights
to the latter rounds of the region tournament.
“It will be nice to play the region tournament on
our field ... It’s good for our girls and it’s good for
our fans,” Kesler said.
Recent storms washed out or postponed eight
consecutive Madison County games, including
four subregion contests.
The hiatus started last week when games against
Habersham Central (Sept. 15) and Apalachee
(Sept. 17) were rained out. Then a tournament at
Morgan County was canceled. Madison County
was to have played five games in that event, and
Kesler said the team needed the experience to
work on different things.
“What really hurt was losing the tournament
this past weekend,” he said. "We had some good
teams and some good pitching that we were going
to see.”
The cancellations continued into this week as
the Raiders’ Tuesday game with Cedar Shoals
was scrapped because water was still on Madison
County’s field. Wednesday’s remake at Habersham
Central was also axed.
Kesler notes that this is the first time in his 12
years as head coach that rain has wreaked such
havoc on the schedule.
“It’s kind of like the spring and baseball season,”
he said.
Madison County returns to the field today to face
Timia Skelton rounds third base in a game
earlier this month. The Madison County
softball team hasn’t played a game in
nearly two weeks due to recent rain. Ben

Clarke Central, having not played since Sept. 12
and looking to add to its program-best 17-1 start.
Madison County will make up its home game
with Cedar Shoals Monday and Tuesday’s senior
night contest with Winder-Barrow will be played
as scheduled. Games against Habersham Central
and Apalachee, however, won't be rescheduled.
"I'm just hoping after this layoff that we can get
back to the level we were playing at,” Kesler said.
Kesler said there's the possibility his team could
play a double header at Morgan County Sept. 30
— facing the Bulldogs and one other team — to
give the Raiders a couple of extra regular season
games.
