off was held last week during a Chamber of Commerce
breakfast at Madison County High School. This year’s
campaign goal for the Northeast Georgia United Way
is $2.2 million. Madison County’s Advisory Board
members are Chairman Knight (Madison County
Schools), Kenneth Beck (Jackson EMC), Keith Cowne
(Madison County Schools), Barry Hardeman (First
Madison Bank), Victor Johnson (Graham Law Firm),
Allen McCannon (Madison County Schools), Ryan
Melton (Family Connections), Mark Mulder (Williams
Transco), Michelle Strickland (Madison County
government) and Marvin White (Madison County

Senior center to
hold plant sale
The Madison County Senior
Center will hold a fall plant sale
Sept. 24 and 25 from 9 a.m. to 3:30
p.m. both days.
“We will have broccoli, cabbage
and collard plants.” organizers said.
“We will have snapdragons and
pansies hanging baskets."
The money from the sale will be
used to help with the senior center
programs.

Library book
sale continues
through Saturday
The Friends of the Madison County
Library is holding its fall book sale
through Sept. 26 at the Madison
County Library in Danielsville.
High quality books and more will be
available at the best prices around,
Friends members said. Hardback
books are SI and paperbacks are 50
cents. “All funds raised go to support
the Madison County Library and
its commitment to the community,”
organizers said.
Sale hours are during regular
library hours: 10 a.m.-6 p.m.,
Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m.,
Thursday.

The Madison County Fair is
coming to town Sept. 29-Oct. 3.
“We hope this year will be the best
fair that has ever come to Madison
County," organizers said.

tough economic times,” organizers
said.

Volunteers needed
for ‘haunted field’
Battle Zone Paint Ball on Neese-
Commerce Road is hosting a ben
efit “haunted field" Oct. 8-31 with
proceeds to go to feed a needy fam
ily at Thanksgiving, according to
organizers.
Volunteers are needed to “haunt”
the field on Thursdays, from 6:30-11
p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays
from 6:30 p.m. to midnight.

City of Colbert
Notice is hereby given that, in accordance with O.C.G.A. 21-2-
9, a general municipal election shall be held in the City of
Colbert on November 3, 2009. The offices up for election are
Mayor and two City Council seats. The following candidates
have qualified for these offices:

All persons desiring to vote in the general election must
register by close of business on October 5, 2009. Voter
registration forms may be picked up at Colbert City Hall or the
Registrar’s Office, Danielsville Courthouse Complex in
Danielsville, Ga. The completed form must be mailed or
carried to the Registrar’s Office in Danielsville. Office hours
are as follows:
Registrar’s Office - Monday thru Friday, 8 am to 5 pm
Colbert City Hall - Monday thru Friday, 8 am to 1 pm
Early and advance voting will begin October 13, 2009, and end
October 30, 2009, in the Colbert City Depot during normal
Colbert City Hall business hours. On election day; November
3, 2009, polls will be open from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm in the
same location.
Should a runoff election be required, such runoff will be held on
December 1,2009.

Account set up
for Henry Jones
An account has been set up at
Merchants and Farmers Bank to
help cover the medical bills of Henry
Jones, former chief of the Collins
Volunteer Fire Department, who is
suffering from cancer. “He gave the
Collins Fire Department 22 years
and was a foster parent of about 20
kids in the county,” friends said. “He
helped all he could when he could.
Now it is time to give back.”

Fern and Jerry Coutant cel
ebrated their Golden Wedding
Anniversary on Aug. 8, 2009.
They were married in the First
Baptist Church in Sault St. Marie,
Michigan by Dr. Chester Laucks,
minister of the First Baptist
Church in Ann Arbor, Michigan,
where they both earned masters
degrees.
The bridal attendants were
Phyllis Holley, sister of the bride,
and George Splon, a childhood
Mend. Wedding music was pro
vided by Miss Bonnie Blackstock,
on the harp. Soloist was Charles
E. Woodard, brother of the bride.
Fern’s parents were Mr. and
Mrs. Charles O. Woodard and
Jerry’s parents were Mr. and Mrs.
Vernon Coutant. All four parents
were residents of Sault St. Marie,
Michigan.
Jerry was employed in the U.S.
Forest Service for 31 years as
a landscape architect. During
those 31 years, the couple lived
in Montana, Colorado, Alaska,
Virginia and Georgia.
Throughout her college years,
Fem was a registered x-ray tech
nician and an elementary school
teacher, prior to becoming the
mother of three children.
The oldest child, Derek N.
Coutant (Amy), of Orange Park
Florida, has three children; Hope,
Helen and Jacob.
Fem and Jerry’s daughter is
Keely J. Sottovia who is the
mother of two boys, Stacey
Williamson, now deceased, and
Roman G. Sottovia, age 7.
Daughter Nicole E. Kress,
(Jerome) of Boulder, Colo., is
deceased.
Friends and acquaintances are
invited to an after-church recep
tion, Sunday, Sept. 27,2009, from
noon until 3 p.m„ at the First
Presbyterian Church, 41 South
Carter Street, in Hartwell.
