What’s happening ‘Banned Books Week’ continues The Madison County is recognizing “Banned Books Week’’ through Oct. 3 with a display of “Censorship in Schools and Libraries.’’ This display has been in use since 1984 and began circulation in the New York Public Library. The new edition (2008-09) has been developed to add significant censorship incidents and patterns, which have occurred throughout the United States. The exhibit begins with the foundations of freedom of speech and freedom of the press that were established in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. Then definitions of censor and censorship are given, which have been extracted from 19 th and 20 th century dictionaries. Following this, in chronological order, appear descriptions of selected incidents of censorship that have occurred in the United States during the past 100 years. The exhibit concludes with quotations on censorship, results of a censorship survey, and the Library Bill of Rights. The exhibit is open to the public during library hours. The library is located at 1315 Hwy. 98 W in Danielsville, next to the Recreation Department. For more information, call 706-795-5597.
