Red Hatters hosting blood drive
The Scarlett O’Hatters and Magnolia Belles
chapters of the Classic City Region of the
Red Hat Society are hosting a blood drive
at the Athens Donor Center throughout
October. The blood drive honors Marie
Sparks, a Danielsville member recently
diagnosed with stage IV bone cancer (in
the photo, Sparks is third from the right
on the front row). Several members kicked
off the blood drive Sept. 25 by donat
ing blood themselves. The Athens Donor
Center is located at 3525 Atlanta Hwy. (at
Timthy Road in the Academy Sports shop
ping center) and is open for blood and
platelet donations on Mondays through
Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on
Thursdays through Saturdays from 8 a.m.
to 3 p.m. CaU 706-546-0691, ext. 233 “to
schedule an appointment to save a life,”
organizers said. “The need is constant. The
gratification is instant. Give blood.”
ROTARY CONSTRUCTS RAMP FOR
McCANNON
The Rotary Club of Madison County constructed a
16-foot handicap ramp for Joe McCannon, Thursday,
Oct. 1. McCannon has congestive heart failure and
other problems that have made it impossible to climb
steps. McCannon, who’s lived on Chandler Farm Road with
his wife, Maudene, since 1954, worked at Cooper Rubber
Company for 30 years, while also maintaining a working
farm. He has been a member of the Madison County Farm
bureau since 1956, so to honor him, the Farm Bureau made
a donation to the Rotary ramp program to cover the cost
of materials. Jack Chandler, who is Maudene’s brother, not
only helped with the ramp, but donated $100 to the ramp
fund. Joe and Maudene donated $300. Eighteen Rotarians,
Farm Bureau members and neighbors turned out to help
with the construction. Rotary members said it “was almost
like a Chandler reunion,” with the following in attendance:
Wesley, Alice, Josh, Mildred, Sam, Elisabeth, Jack and Jill
Chandler. Other workers included Bob Anderson, Tony
and Susan Taylor, Ed Brown, Chris Tucker, Jerry Coutant,
Roy Gandy, Jerry Bond, Johnny Bond and Jim Jeffer.
